On Friday, I went to see Spider-Man. The theater was half full. Right now, I'm in a packed theater, 20 minutes away from watching Ted. So, Franklyn, to answer your question, YES, it's the quality of the movie.

Having seen TDKR, I can't imagine it taking the 2012 top spot from The Avengers. For starters, it's long running time means fewer screenings. Next, it's not a very child friendly movie. Between the barely intelligible Bane, a major lack of action for most of the movie and how much of a downer the tale is, the typical ten year old won't be able to sit still or keep quiet. With the general consensus pointing toward being far less popular than TDK, more movie goers will be willing to wait for it to show up on HBO. I'm not convinced that it will even be able to top one billion.
