It's normally not mine either, but this one received generally positive reviews and it's pretty funny. I'm only about 20 pages in and I'd say I'm enjoying it so far.

I've just finished 1/3 of A Canticle for Leibowitz. I'm enjoying it thus far. It's a very different type of post-apocalyptic story, and it's rather refreshing. This is coming out of reading Neuromancer too, so I am really enjoying the writing style thus far.

I've heard a lot about A Canticle for Leibowitz. All good things.

1636: The Kremlin Games

One of Eric Flint's Ring of Fire novels, and very different take on the Ring of Fire universe. As the title suggests, it takes place primarily in Russia. Unlike how the title suggests however, the events unfold between 1631 up to 1636. There is very little reference to the events which take place in the other Ring of Fire novels, so it is easily able to stand on it's own.

last third of canticle is terrible. his guesses at the future are pretty funny.

the years of rice and salt by kim stanley robinson is currently on my plate... but i can't get into it. characters die and are reborn all the time, there is a ton of muslim and buddhist afterlife stuff that really doesn't interest me at all.

moving onto hyperion by simmons i think.

I will let you know if you're right when I hit the last third of the book.

And let me know what you think about Hyperion. It's on my list, but I have heard things about the ending that may deter me just a bit.

Hyperion is freaking amazing. The ending is very abrupt. The whole book is about a journey and they don't get there. That's for the sequel. Knowing this should help.

That's what I read. The abruptness, that is. I'm not too concerned about the abrupt ending, though, but I don't suppose you can consider Hyperion a standalone book?

I had an idea: do you guys think we should do a "CS! Book of the Month Club" type of deal or something?

We could but my concern is 1) JBond has read pretty much everything 2) I am following a science fiction/fantasy list right now, so I'd be hesitant to take on another genre at the moment 3) I read really slow.

I suppose I'd consider it. Though I go through reading phases...

I was about to mention the upcoming adaptation of Hyperion, but there is even less info for it at imdb than there was before. I'm guessing it's been shelved.

I started a thread a while back to gauge interest, but there were only a few willing to try it.

it should be optioned as an adult themed cartoon. the tree ship alone would be impossible to do with live action actors.

Hey, JBond, have you read all four books in the Hyperion Cantos? Are they all worth the read, or should I just stick with Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion?

I've only read the first two. I guess the conclusion of Fall of Hyperion wasn't interesting enough. I may go back some day.

Is The Fall of Hyperion still worth the read?

I think I found it good enough. Regardless, you'll kind of have to for closure.

As long as it is decent and has some kinda closure, I will probably get my hands on it. Thanks!

Although if you're looking for an answer to what the Shrike is, like I was hoping for, I'm pretty sure that's suppose to be in the third and fourth books.

Finished listening to Deliverance and ultimately it is a pretty good book - different from my usual fare, and not great, but not horrible.
As I recall the movie (haven't seen it since it came out in 72) I was particularly uncomfortable with the scene were Bobby (Beatty played the part) got raped by the hillbilly duo, but with the book - which is narrated by Ed (Voight in the movie - I was mostly uncomfortable with his admiration of the "he man' Lewis character (Reynolds) - it got a bit too ...um, ... expressive, shall we say lol.

Next I am listening to an account of the Jonestown, Guyana massacre/mass suicide in 1978 A Thousand Lives by Julia Scheeres
I can still recall how shocked I was at the cover of Newsweek Magazine and the article within seeing all the dead bodies lying all over the place.

I don't like recommending books because you can never be sure they'll like it and you've determined many hours of their life if they read it. It doesn't bother me recommending that one.
