That's it? My argument is now reduced to "It's Star Warsy?" Look around, I go into many reasons why I don't like the movie. God forbid anyone disagree with you on this site. It's amazing how condescending you get.
And being a sci-fi nerd doesn't mean I like all sci-fi, that doesn't even make sense.

yea that little 'this is a different universe' thing is stupid, in an alternate universe who says they would all, exactly the same people, go into star fleet? doesn't that defeat the purpose of an alternate universe if they all end up in star fleet in all these universes? although it could be a stance on determinism... but again i think it is much shallower than that.
i dunno... that is the problem with 'hey its an alternate universe'. reminds me of the scene in thank you for smoking, when they explain how they will let angelina jolie and brad pitt smoke a cigarette in an oxygen rich environment.

Determinism? Don't give them so much credit.
Oooh, good call on the Thank You For Smoking scene. I have to remember that more often to explain sci-fi bull****ing. Jeff Megall: Sony has a futuristic sci-fi movie they're looking to make. Nick Naylor: Cigarettes in space? Jeff Megall: It's the final frontier, Nick. Nick Naylor: But wouldn't they blow up in an all oxygen environment? Jeff Megall: Probably. But it's an easy fix. One line of dialogue. 'Thank God we invented the... you know, whatever device.'

Because all those Next Generation movies flopped at the box office. And I don't think anyone would have been interested in Deep Space Nine or Voyager or whatever the heck came afterwards. And making a film with original characters would have been too risky.

I don't feel I'm qualified to speak on behalf of Star Trek '09 because of my admitted overall ignorance to the sci-fi genre, but I was at entertained by it. It did seem pretty juvenile a lot of the time though. And eff off, Tyler Perry!

2011: 13 Assassins
Technically I believe it was released in Japan in 2010, but it was released worldwide in 2011. In any case, it came to California in 2011 so I think it counts. As you may have seen by my Japanese Cinema thread I'm a big fan of Japanese films. This is just another addition to my support of their impact on world cinema. Although not the most original, complex, or thought provoking film, it is highly entertaining, very rich in character and first-class battle scenes. What I also enjoy about foreign film is their use of dialogue. It really gives the film a classic sense and takes you back to the earlier samurai films of Kurosawa. 'He who values his life dies a dogs death' is one of many lines that would probably sound stupid in English, but reading the subtitle of the Japanese language gives it weight and substance. It's very dialogue heavy and it's great to help get into the mood. And as mentioned, the battle scenes, oh yes. Almost the entire last half of the film is a battle and a great watch at that. When I finally get my blu-ray player this is going to be one of the first films I pick up. VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

A reboot made sense for Batman since there was barely any continuity in that series to begin with and Batman and Robin was not only bad but almost unwatchable. As for James Bond, well, Casino Royale is a good movie but I think the notion that that series needed to be "rebooted" was not necessarily in its best interest. First of all, I think Pierce Brosnan still had some good movies in him (image if they'd just needlessly ditched Roger Moore as soon as he made Moonraker, we never would have had For Your Eyes Only). They could have easily just brought in a new creative team and made a darker more high movie without breaking decasdes old traditions and acting like this was James Bond's first mission. If anything Quantum of Solace proved that Casino Royale's success had more to do with Martin Campbell than it did from this notion that the series needed rebooting.

Casino Royale isn't really a reboot per say. Each actor who played Bond had movies that existed in their own little universe.

I am not sure I select one per say that year and so on.
I will however list the best movie scores 2000-2011. Spider-Man. Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone. Lord Of The Rings The Fellowship Of The Ring. Pirates Of The Caribbean Curse Of The Black Pearl. Lord Of The Rings TTT. Star Wars Revenge Of The Sith. Batman Begins Van Helsing- I know many hated the movie but liked the score here. Pirates Of The Caribbean DMC. Lord Of The Rings ROTK The Dark Knight. Avatar. I am not a big fan of this movie but its visuals and Score were great. Alice In Wonderland. Rango. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows 1 and 2. |

It's at least half a reboot. They made him a rookie agent.

I'll bring this one back for a new list, this time....
Doomsday's Favorite Uses of Songs in Film These are highly subjective I know so I'm not going to put them in any order, but hopefully you guys enjoy the ones I've picked. First one's up... Atlantis By: Donovan Goodfellas VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:
One of the standout scenes in the whole film, it’s quite an interesting song to choose. Hearing “Down where she may be….” while watching Billy Bats get his head kicked in my Joe Pesci and Bobby DeNiro is a scene that will stick with you long after you see the movie. A cherry on top is that the following scene is one of my favorites of the film, where they stop in and visit Tommy’s (Joe Pesci) mother who cooks them a meal while their victim waits in the trunk. Making Time By: Creation Rushmore VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:
Even the title of the song by itself is appropriate. The track plays over Max Fischer showcasing each and every club he founded at Rushmore Academy, from the calligraphy team to the fencing team to the trap shooting team. I could have picked any number of songs used in any Wes Anderson movie but this is my favorite. Slow Ride By: Foghat Dazed and Confused VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:
For a movie set in the 1970s bringing a 90s generation back 20 years, what better song to play with the final shot of a car full of friends roaring down the highway? |
