I have so many films that I would kill for Special Editions...

"Annie Hall", "Scream", "A Nightmare on Elm Street", "Contact", "L.A. Confidential", "Superman: The Movie", "Superman II", "Superman III", "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace", "Kill Bill: Volume 1", "Kill Bill: Volume 2", "The Passion of the Christ", "Mission: Impossible", "Mission: Impossible II", "Rosemary's Baby", "The Exorcist", "Armageddon", "The Fugitive", "The Matrix", "Lethal Weapon", "True Lies", "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", "Rocky", "Crocodlie Dundee", "The General's Daughter" and many more.

Also Stanley Kubrick's films "2001: A Space Oddsey", "A Clockwork Orange", "Full Metal Jacket", and "Eyes Wide Shut". And all the James Bond Films.

How about Hitchcock's Spellbound, Rebecca, and Notorious... The criterion prices have flown up since those DVD's went out of print... Do you think they'll release new editions?

I think they could use a new set with the films:

Rebecca
Notorious
Spellbound
The 39 Steps
The Lady Vanishes
The Paradine Case

They're all from anchor bay so I think it would work...

Don't expect Annie Hall, Scream, Superman III and IV, Mission: Impossible II, Lethal Weapon, Armageddon or The Matrix. Woody Allen isn't a fan of bonus features so the likelihood of a new DVD is slim. Scream is already a pretty complete SE, with a documentary, commentary track and deleted scenes. If they make a Scream 4, maybe they'll release the Unrated Scream but I wouldn't hold my breath. I doubt that Warner will bother adding features to the lesser Superman DVDs, Mission: Impossible II is already an SCE, Armageddon got a Criterion and The Matrix is as decked out as it's going to get in Warner's 10-disc box set. In the Warner Home Video chat on the HTF forums, the Warner rep said there's no plans to upgrade Lethal Weapon.

As for the others:
- L.A. Confidential will be getting a new Special Edition in 2006. This was mentioned in 2005's Warner Home Video chat on the HTF forums (via The Digital Bits).
- Superman and Superman II will undoubtedly get new editions with the release of Superman Returns. If you're lucky, maybe Warner will give the Superman franchise the same treatment as the Batman franchise and all four will get new 2-discs.
- Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair will probably be out early 2007 after a late 2006 theatrical release. It will have all the super awesome bonus features Tarantino has been promising since 2004.
- The Passion of the Christ was supposed to have an SE but I haven't heard anything. Maybe with Apocalypto hitting theaters it will arrive, or possibly with Mel's Passion 'sequel' he's working on.
- Mission: Impossible will probably get a Special Collector's Edition with the third one hitting theaters or possibly when it hits DVD.
- True Lies is supposedly on the way as well, although it has been for some time. I would expect it sooner or later.
- With the sixth Rocky film hitting theaters it's possible MGM will do a 2-disc set, plus a THIRD box set of all the Rocky films. I remember when the second box set was announced, Stallone promised new bonus features on all of the movies. I wouldn't be surprised if that set was held back for the release of this sixth film.
- Mr. & Mrs. Smith was rumored to have an R-rated cut. If it did, expect Fox to double-dip it as a 2-disc set in a few months. If you're not talking about the Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie movie, I wouldn't know anything about that.
- Warner has some sort of plan to upgrade some of its Kubrick films in 2006, with at least 2001 mentioned quite concretely. I'd expect a new box set.
- The James Bond films are getting new SEs as well. Recently it was reported on The Digital Bits that Roger Moore had recorded audio commentary on all of his films. Look for that when Casino Royale either hits theaters or hits DVD.

As for the rest, I have no reason to say anything otherwise. Nightmare on Elm Street has a commentary but maybe if they do the prequel New Line will totally upgrade the collection boxset. The Fugitive and Contact are already considered Special Editions by Warner and they both have commentary tracks and more. The Exorcist seems like maybe it will get a 2-disc with both the theatrical and "Version You've Never Seen" cuts on it but I haven't heard anything. I haven't heard anything at all about SEs of Crocodile Dundee, Rosemary's Baby and The General's Daughter.

From www.thedigitalbits.com...

The studio is also releasing a new version of Event Horizon on 4/18 (we believe it's also a Special Collector's Edition - we'll let you know).

From www.davisdvd.com...

After years of rumors, it appears that the much talked-about Event Horizon: Special Editon is finally on the way. Recently rated bonus materials for the disc have just been revealed over at the British Board of Film Classification. They include: three deleted & extended scenes ("Briefing," "Extended Medical Bay," "Extended Burning Man Confrontation"), four "The Point of No Return" featurettes ("The Crew Gathers," "The Dark Inside," "The Revolving Corridor," "Shooting Wire Work"), "The Unseen Event Horizon" ("Unfilmed Rescue Scene," "Conceptual Art Montage") and a five-part, 102-minute "Making Of" documentary ("Into the Jaws of Darkness," "The Body of the Beast," "Liberate Tutume Ex Infernis," "The Scale to Hell," "The Womb of Fear"). We'll have a street date for you as soon as it's announced.

and

Speaking to Now Playing Magazine, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson has revealed that a special edition of his sci-fi/horror flick Event Horizon is on tap for 2006. "I just did a commentary for Event Horizon, because were releasing a special edition of that next year with a lot of deleted scenes. Looking back at that movie, there are things that we took out of the film [and] I think the movie would be better with those things in there. Paramount has sold so many DVDs of it that they've offered to do the fully-fledged 'You can reintegrate the scenes and we'll pay for it to be remixed and everything' version. The problem has been actually finding all of the materials because its been quite a long time, so we're still at the point where we're trying to decide if it makes sense to do a director's cut or whether [we should just include] a lot of deleted material with a separate commentary explaining why it was taken out and where the scenes would have gone. Or we may do a branching version of the DVD so you can see where those scenes may have sat."

So never say never.

Also Bryan Singer is remaking Logan's Run next, so expect Warner to do a new DVD when that film is released.

That's not a two-disc set. If it has two discs which the listing seems to imply, Disc 2 is the CD soundtrack.

Dude, thanks for that rundown! A lot of the films are just wishful thinking. For "Scream" I really want a anamorphic transfer, I forgot about the Criterian "Aramgeddon" DVD and the Matrix boxed set. I hope that Warner does what they did for Batman to Superman, I liked all the films and really want new editions of them all. Its also nice to see "L.A. Confidential" and the James Bond films. I actually rented the DVDs of "Contact" and "The Fugutive" but those are far from Special Editions. They are both great films and deserve much better treatment than what they have. "Rosemary's Baby" would be great to have a commentary on and lots of new interviews and featurettes as well. But regardless most of this was just me wishful thinking, but thanks for taking the time to write that!!!

Sure. Personally I thought the SE of The Fugitive was pretty good. Tommy Lee Jones sounds lost on the commentary track, but nonetheless I thought the documentaries were satisfying. I don't know much about Polanski, it's possible he doesn't do commentary but now that I think about it I think they are remaking Rosemary's Baby so maybe you'll see one then. Lastly, there is a huge sale of Paramount discs at Wal-Mart for only $4.88, and to me that says either a) new DVDs on the way or b) our crap we're getting rid of. Among the titles were the two Crocodile Dundee movies so maybe they'll get SEs after all.

Do you think the "Ocean's" franchise will get a set when the third one hits?

Here are some others that I hope get upgrades:

-Amistad
-Clash of the Titans
-Excalibur
-Bottle Rocket (I think this deserves Criterion Treatment)
-Raising Arizona
-On DVDaficionado it says that Ridley Scott's "1492: Conquest of Paradise" is Not Annouced yet... So is Paramount working on it?

Droid, have you heard anything on any of these?

I heard mumblings of a Raising Arizona re-release, but all it really said was that the new DVD would be anamorphic, which sounds disappointing. The Coens notoriously aren't big on features but hopefully we'll get a new transfer, a Mortimer Young intro, some deleted scenes and maybe even a featurette. Anyway, nothing within the past months about Raising Arizona.

In 2003 or something Criterion was trying to do Bottle Rocket. Hopefully that will happen eventually, but I don't know what Sony's licensing policy is.

DVDaf lists everything that gets a lot of rumors as "NOT ANNOUNCED YET" so while that may mean something it may not.

The others, I have heard nothing. Amistad seems unlikely, it was a flop, wasn't it?

There has been an SE of Adaptation in the pipeline at Columbia since 2002. There should be a pretty extensive documentary (think the Panic Room DVDs since I think David Prior is producing this DVD set as well) and Susan Orlean recorded an audio commentary (according to her). But there is no date.

No news on any re-issue of Being John Malkovich. Personally I'm hoping New Line will release a 2-disc set of Human Nature with all the bonus features from R2 if Warner Independent's The Science of Sleep is a hit. These features include deleted scenes and a commentary with Gondry and Rhys Ifans.
