Not to get any hope up if you read this too early, but I just wanted to start a topic for the upcoming announcement. New Line's set to make one at a big bash in Burbank tonight, and seeing that its only around 7pm in the West coast, I'm guessing it hasn't been made yet. But it should be out soon and when it is, anybody can feel free to post it here if they wish. They should announce the specs on possibly both realeases and maybe some cover artwork. So be on the lookout if anything comes your way. :)

Well, thanks for the help!

From The Digital Bits:

<img src="http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/miscgfx/covers/lordoftheringswidedvd.jpg" alt="" />

As expected, there will be multiple versions of the film available on DVD. The first is a 2-disc Theatrical Edition on August 6th, which will arrive in dual full frame and 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen versions (SRP for each is $29.95). Disc One of this release will feature the film itself (in the aspect ratio of your choice, depending on the version you purchase), along with Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and Dolby Surround audio, English subtitles and closed captioning. Disc Two will feature over two hours of bonus content, including an exclusive, 10-minute preview of The Two Towers hosted by director Peter Jackson, the Welcome to Middle-Earth Houghton Mifflin in-store special, The Quest for the Ring (the FOX Network special) and A Passage to Middle-Earth (the Sci-Fi Channel special), some 15 additional featurettes created for lordoftherings.net, theatrical trailers and TV spots, Enya's May it Be music video, a preview of the Electronic Arts The Two Towers video game, a preview of the special extended DVD version, exclusive online content via DVD-ROM and more. The cover artwork for these two versions can be seen above. This release will be the PG-13 cut of the film that was seen in theaters.

Then, on November 12th, New Line will release the Special Extended Edition of the film, as a 4-disc set (in anamorphic widescreen, with Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and Dolby Surround). The packaging for this set is still in the mock-up stage, but I can tell you that it looks like an ancient, leather-bound hardcover book. This will feature director Peter Jackson's much talked about extended cut, with some 30 minutes of scenes restored to the film (more on that in a minute). The film will be split over the first two discs of the set, with the second two containing more than SIX HOURS of in-depth behind-the-scenes material. Much of this content is still in production, so the final disc specs are still TBA. But you can look for feature-length director's audio commentary, art and photo galleries, documentaries and more (note that the SRP has not yet been set). Back to the longer cut of the film - WETA Digital is creating many new visual effects shots for the new footage and composer Howard Shore is currently recording new music cues for these scenes, which are being personally supervised by Jackson. Here's a rundown of the new scenes you can look for (and to you ring-bearers, please forgive me if I get a few of the names or details wrong):

A new addition to the opening sequence in which Bilbo provides background on Hobbits and their history in voice-over as he writes his memoirs.

A new introduction to Samwise Gamgee, seen in his capacity as a gardener.

A scene taking place at the Green Dragon Inn, which introduces us to the camaraderie of the Hobbits (we see them singing together) and sets up the geopolitics of the story.

The Hobbits witnessing the departure of the Elves from Middle Earth on the way to Bree.

Aragorn watching over the sleeping Hobbits, singing the ballad of Beren and Luthien to himself in the night.

Aragorn at his mother's grave, in which we learn that he was raised by Elves and that Sauron has long hunted him.

Two new moments during the departure from Rivendale, one in which we see Arwen's emotional reaction to Aragorn's leaving, and another in which Elrond sees the Fellowship off.

A scene with the Fellowship in the mines of Moria, in which we learn how the Dwarves themselves unleashed the fire-demon that eventually destroyed them.

A scene at Lothlorien, where Galadriel bestows upon each of the Fellowship a gift which will play an important role later in the Trilogy.

And finally, more footage of the battle at Amon Hen. This is not particularly bloody footage, but its addition will likely result in this cut of the film receiving an R-rating.

So that's the extended version. This same 4-disc DVD edition will also be available in a Collector's Gift Set, which will include the National Geographic: Beyond the Movie - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring DVD (containing 2 previously unreleased featurettes and a photo gallery), a set of exclusive Decipher game cards and a pair of bookends sculpted by WETA artists to look like the Argonath, all in packaging designed by production artist Alan Lee.

All of the information above was revealed during an elaborate multi-media presentation, followed by a number of speeches by New Line executives. On hand were several members of the cast and crew, including John Rhys-Davies (Gimli), Orlando Bloom (Legolas Greenleaf), Billy Boyd (Pippin), Dominic Monaghan (Merry), hair designer Peter Owen, costume designer Ngila *****on and Oscar-winning visual effects/make-up supervisor Richard Taylor (with his new golden statue in hand - and yes, it IS heavier than you'd think). The event was bookended by an elaborate reception and buffet dinner. But the highlight of the evening was a special video greeting from director Peter Jackson (absent due to his tight post-production schedule on both the DVDs and the next film), who talked about his work on the discs and introduced a special treat - the public premiere of the preview for The Two Towers, which you can see in theaters attached to the end of Fellowship starting this Friday. And I can tell you, this alone was worth my hour-long drive up to the studio. The next film looks simply amazing.

So there you have it - New Line's Lord of the Rings DVD plans in a nutshell. We'll have the artwork for the special extended DVD and the collector's gift set as soon as they're available. In the meantime, here's a look at the menu screens for the theatrical edition DVDs. Enjoy!

I have to say that I was hoping the theatrical release would have no features. I'm getting tempted to buy it.

The menus look rather nice. The Main menu's use of colors compliment eachother well. And the scene selection looks cool. :)

here's another article i found regarding the dvd or dvd's i should say.

New Line Announces 4 LOTR DVDs
Two in August, Two in November

LOTR DVD
August Release
March 27, 2002
Ever wonder why you see so many TV ads for new DVDs? It's because the studios often make more money from the video release than they take in at the box office. So with a film like Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings, which took in gobs of cash at the theaters, the DVD has enormous earning potential. To maximize its take from this blockbuster title, New Line is preparing four different DVD editions of the first film in the LOTR trilogy. In August New Line will ship the "regular edition" of the DVD, a two-disk set that will be available in two different skus -- a widescreen version and a pan-and-scan version (the srp is $29.95 for both versions). Most collectors prefer the widescreen version because it includes all the visual information of the original, but pan-and-scan was developed to adapt widescreen film for TV-shaped screens and many people who don't have big screen TVs prefer pan-and-scan. As DVD wrests the market away from VHS, the new debate for retailers will be whether to carry both the widescreen and P & S versions of any particular movie on DVD.

The third and fourth versions of the LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring that will be released in November will both be in the widescreen anamorphic format. These will be collector-oriented four-disk sets and will include 30 minutes of additional footage cut into the film by director Peter Jackson himself. This new "version" of the film will be rated "R" due to the extended violence in the added footage, but at this time no retail price has been set for this release. This is also true of the fourth and final DVD sku, a special limited edition gift set version of the 4-disk release that includes two bookend statuettes produced by upscale toymaker Sideshow (see "Sideshow Toys Expands High End Offerings") as well as the National Geographic Special "Beyond the Movie" DVD, and several highly collectible LOTR CCG cards from Decipher (see "LOTR Starter Decks Sell Out"). New Line did not reveal the special features and extras for the 4-disk sets, many of which are still in production, but it is likely that the four disk sets will include the extras announced for the 2-disk August releases.

The extra features announced for both of the August DVDs are considerable. They include three in-depth documentaries about the making of the film: "A Passage to Middle-Earth" from the Sci-Fi Channel, "The Quest for the Ring" from the FBC Network, and "Welcome to Middle-Earth" produced by Houghton Mifflin. The "extras" disk also includes 15 featurettes created for the LOTR Website, a 10-minute preview of the second film in the series, The Two Towers, a music video of Enya performing "May It Be," original theatrical trailers and TV ads, as well as exclusive online content available to DVD-ROM users.

New Line's ambitious DVD program for Fellowship of the Ring provides some tough choices for both retailers and consumers. Die hard fans of the film will really want to have the extra footage included in the November releases, but can they wait? At least New Line is being upfront with consumers and letting them know that a "director's cut" version is going to be available. But in two years after the entire trilogy is out, won't some kind of special box set containing all the films and all the "extras" be an irresistible temptation for New Line?

Why do they always do this? They always come out with two, three, four different versions of the mvie or whatever on DVD, I don't know which one to buy now? Can anyone tell me which one is better, you know, which version? And please don't tell me to buy all of them cause I ain't got the cash.

Is it possible that the extra contents from the 1st DVD (2 disc) will be on the 2nd release of the DVD. (4 disc)

It was nice being our first real promo peice, but other than that, it's just a big fluff peice.

It seems like New Line's following Pearl Harbor's plans. They relese a 2 disc theatrical cut and then a 4 disc director's cut with super features.

The two disc August release is for the type that is impatient and wants to own it now and isn't interested in overexcessive special features. It's the theatrical cut, the one you saw in theaters. There will be only two hours of special features. A few making ofs and promo peices including a 10 minute look at The Two Towers.

The four disc release in November is the one I'm getting. It's the one for the ultimate fan. It includes 30 minutes of never before scene footage that will be reincorporated into the film to give a Director's Cut. The 3.5 hour film will be spread over two discs for the best picture quality. Also there will be 3 audio commentary tracks (I read on a few sites) and more than 6 hours of features on two discs. (That comes to about 16 hours of special features)

So if you're a fan, I'd definately hold out for the 4 disc version. If you're just the type that dug the movie and doesn't care for deleted scenes or too many features, I'd go with the two disc. I hope this helps. :)

From the Digital Bits:

We're getting a lot of e-mails from readers asking if the special features set to be included on the theatrical edition of The Fellowship of the Ring (due on 8/6) will be repeated on the special extended version (following on 11/12). The answer is no. The documentaries and web featurettes are being included on the theatrical edition because a lot of fans have requested them. But since the special extended version includes an entirely new cut of the film, everything that will be included on that later edition is being custom created specifically for that release, for a more adult audience and to go MUCH deeper into the making of the film trilogy than what was seen in any of the TV specials. The idea is that most DVD consumers will be satisfied with the theatrical edition, while more sophisticated fans will wait for the extended edition. The most diehard fans will probably want both, as they perfectly complement each other but do not overlap.

Also, just to clarify, each DVD version includes a SEPARATE edit of the film. The 4-disc special extended set DOES NOT include the theatrical cut of the film on a separate disc or via seamless branching. If you want the theatrical cut, you have to buy the August 2-disc set. If you want the longer cut, you buy the November 4-disc edition. If you want both, save your money accordingly and buy both. Some people may feel that this is an effort to milk consumers, but I don't think so at all. In order to include everything you'll be getting on both editions, New Line would have to create a single 6-disc release, which would be WAY too expensive for most consumers to even consider. This way, they can have DVD purchase options for everyone. And by not having any overlap between the two editions, fans who buy both are absolutely getting the most for their money. Just think... over eight hours of unique special edition material alone on these two releases, not including the films themselves! If you're a fan, I say don't look a gift horse in the mouth!

Too bad. I already have the "Passage to Middle-Earth" and "Quest for the Ring" on video, but i was hoping to get the preview of TTT and the Houghton Mifflin Instore special. :( I guess I ould rent it. Or if I'm really lucky, I could enter a contest and win it! :D

Well, this is a new report from DVD Town on what we could expect on the Special Extended Edition:

We have got more details on the Limited Special Extended Edition of Lord of the Rings for you. You all know that a set of custom bookends which should look like Argonath designed and sculpted by Sideshow Weta is included in the box. Now, what on earth do we need bookends for? To place our Lord of the Rings Trilogy in between of course. The art of the DVDs in the Trilogy will be made so they look like books so sometime in 2004 we will have the complete collection between these. Nice.

Now, more on the extras that will be included on the Director's Cut of the DVDs. It will be more in-depth and totally different than the extra on the Theatrical versions. We have gotten the below list from people inside New Line. So along with our Danish sister site(DVDTOWN.DK) we are the first in the world to bring you this on the Special Extended Edition of Lord of the Rings. The details are not 100% yet and may change:

Extras on the Special Extended Edition :
Dolby Digital 5.1 EX, DTS 6.1 ES
J.R.R. Tolkien - The Architect of Middle Earth
The Origins of the Project ‘ How it all began’
Encyclopedia of Middle Earth
Atlas of Middle Earth
Adapting Tolkien for the Screen
Designing & Building Middle Earth
Virtual Tour of Weta Workshop’s creation of the ‘Fellowship’
Visual Effects
Scale, Miniatures, Weta Digital, Production Progression
Post Production

This is very exciting also the fact that it now seems like DTS will be included on the Extended Editions. It would make sense since they now have two DVDs to place the movie on and therefore more space which should make room for the extra DTS track. Oh my, can't wait for these babies.

I guess you guys aren't interested in this news. Oh well. Anyway, if these are specs, I would like to see a documentary like the one on the Star Wars Phantom Menace DVD. I've heard quite a bit about the doc shot by a New Zealand filmmaker named Costa Botes who shot quite a bit of behind the scenes footage. I'd also like to see more on the Oscar winning makeup, music, cinematography, and although it didn't win, costumes.

Here's a bit of an interview with Robert Meyer Burnett who's working on the four disc set (promoting the Usual Suspects DVD). It gives us info on who's producing the set and his thoughts:

"I've been working with DVD Content producers Kurtti-Pellerin for almost eighteen months and I hope to continue working with them, because I do think we're making the best DVD special editions in the business. "The Fantasia Anthology," "The Ultimate Toy Box," "Snow White," "Atlantis" and "TRON" all came from Kurtti-Pellerin. The company just finished "Monsters, Inc." and the Platinum Edition of "Beauty and the Beast." We're also currently deep into production on a DVD I believe will be the best DVD ever made, period. I can't say what it is...but it comes out in November. There's a reason why Michael Pellerin was hand-picked to produce this very special four-disc DVD."

The four-disc set is obviously LOTR. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

So which one is the one to buy??? From what I've seen its the 4 disc one, if you want to wait that long. And maybe just rent the first one a few times. What are some pro's and con's for each???

Rizor
04-02-2002, 01:16 PM
August
Pros
- Don't have to wait as long
- over 2 hours of Special Features
- Ten minute Two Towers preview
- Cheaper $29 (but probably cheaper in stores)

Cons
- No commentaries
- If you're into it, no DTS
- No deleted scenes
- Pretty much a lack of new features
- A dual layered disc could hold up to 4 hours, but this uses only 2. The R2 version has 158 minutes

November
Pros
- Deleted Scenes
- Peter Jackson commentary
- 3 or possibly more commentary tracks
- From only what's been announced, six hours of features, nearly 17 including the commentaries
- Planned to have DTS

Cons
- You'll have to wait until November
- Likely cost of $39 (but probably cheaper in stores)
- Two dual layered discs could hold up to 8 hours. They've only announced 6. Where are the other 2 hours? Hopefully this'll be fixed (unless one's single layered)
- The movie is spread over two discs so you'll have to switch mid-movie

Why can’t they just release them both in August or November and then let people choose which they’re willing to pay for, the other thing is just mean.

I'll buy both, because on the original site, it said that the extended version will in fact be that. There will be no option, you will have to see that. In other words, the theatrical version will not be viewed on that, just the extended one. Personally, I loved what I saw in the theater, and when I am old and gray, I would like to see the difference. I don't know; that is just an important point to me. Plus, I won't be able to wait, I can tell you that, and Ill wait in line for hours to get that, or else slip the guy some extra cash and get it the night before. :D

Rizor

I'll probably just rent the first release. I already have some of the features on VHS, and I'll just watch the new ones. For the theatrical version, I'll record it off of pay-per-view (lucky that New Line didn't sign some exclusive deal <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> ). It won't be widescreen, but oh well. That might just keep me happy until November.

Then I'll get the Extended version and I'll be happy. I need to save for other things too, so I'm technically being cheap. I'm not really willing to blow nearly $50 for both, and I need to save up for other releases later in the year too (Spider-Man, E.T., Blade Runner S.E., possibly SW Ep2). :)

for the people who have Terminator 2 : The Ultimate Edition DVD will know what i'm talking about below:

What they did for T2 DVD, they have 3 different versions of the movie on ONE Single Disc, and then the second had all the awesome features.
Why can LOTR do that. Instead of adding the deleted scenes into the movie, they should give us a choice, this is what i prefer for the 4 Disc DVD that is coming in November:

Disc 1 : The Film - The theatrical version - PG-13 - DTS Sound - with commentary from PJ and cast
Disc 2 : The Director's Cut - Rated R Version - DTS Sound - with commentary from PJ and cast

Disc 3 & Disc 4: All The Features, like the making, tons of featurettes, tv. specials, music videos, etc.

don't u guys agree?

Rizor

I think the point was to treat the two releases as two different movies. But I would also have liked both versions.

Anyway, the big news! HUGE! DVD-wise anyway. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> TheOneRing.Net has some exclusive art for the two releases in November!

Looks like the 4-Disc will unfortunately come in 2 package choices. One's the same as the two disc, but they've fattened it up. I hate it when they do that!

<img src="http://img-www.theonering.net/images/scrapbook/3878.jpg" alt="" />

And the super-cool Limited Edition packaging, which I only hope the stores carry for the same price:

Well, making dvds aren't exactly easy and it's still in production. But I know what you mean. I'd like to get my hands on those discs! Hopefully, they'll announce what's on it soon.

And more news. The 4-dic S.E. version is said to have three commentaries. Of course, I wouldn't mind one or two more like an isolated score or something.

But here's 4 confirmed participents. Peter Jackson's stated he did one. And recently, Billy Boyd (Pippin) gave an interiew in which he said he recorded one with the other three hobbits (Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, and Dominic Monaghan).

I would have liked to see McKellan or Christopher Lee do one too, but it sounds unlikely.

The second looks more custom made for the film while the first is just your average poster on a keepcase. So I'll definately try to get the second as long as my store carries it. Either that or I'll get it from over the internet (which I'm not too fond of, but guess there's nothing really wrong with it).

hoq much will the special edition cost anyway??will it be like...twice the normal price??how much does a average dvd cost in america???or any other parts of the world???

Rizor
04-24-2002, 05:22 PM
The usual price of any DVD in America could range from $19.99 to $29.99. A special edition of something like "Say Anything" was $19.99, and bigger discs like Star Wars Ep 1, POTA, and such are $29.99. Of course this is just a suggested retail price and I usually find them about 30% cheaper.

The two-disc version of FOTR is going for $29.99 and I'm hoping for this version to be under $45 (I'm being cheap). I've read somewhere that the R2 release will be 44.99 and seeing that British currency has a higher value than U.S., I'm hoping that's just a rumored price.

Ruaidh Buardhair
04-24-2002, 05:32 PM
the special edition dvd is probably going to be costing around 30-40 U.S. dollars. I did read somewhere that it would be 29.99 for the special edition but i find that very hard to believe.

PsYkOoOoO
04-25-2002, 01:25 AM

04-25-2002, 10:40 AM
you are right about the special edition...since it will be packed with so much I bet it does cost more than US$40. Doesn't matter to me though because I'm going to have to HAVE everything they put out.

I know some people don't undertand why two versions are being released but the way I see it is that Jackson knows that we want it as soon as possible and is rushing to get the theatrical version to us as soon as possible. Then he's going to continue working on the extended version while at the same time finishing up TTT (geez...does this guy never stop? :) ) I'm glad they are doing it this way and that different stuff is going to be offered on both versions...can't wait!

Now, if we could only pre-order the second version...just pre-ordered the August one! :D

thinking about which to buy if you cannot get both editions. I plan to wait for the special extended edition and ofcourse try to get the 'book' set, because i want the 30 minutes of deleted scenes. I also really want the TTT preview but the way i see it, TTT will come out like a month after i buy the extended version, and thinking for the future, i plan to buy the extended version of each of the three, if they keep with the pattern, and then the box collector set which should come out.... what 2004 or 2005????? do you guys think that if they do that box set, the movies will be like the early release or the extended one? tell me what you think

April 2002

New Line Home Entertainment announced the forthcoming release of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on DVD and VHS at a gala event at the historic Warner Bros. studio lot. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring will be available in two distinctly different versions on both DVD and VHS formats, on August 6th, and November 12, 2002.

On August 6, New Line Home Entertainment will unveil the award-winning theatrical version of the film on DVD and VHS. The DVD will contain one of the greatest sneak previews in movie history, featuring a ten-minute behind the scenes preview of The Two Towers, the second installment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. This glance, more than four months before the theatrical release of The Two Towers on December 18th, 2002, will offer a never-before-seen look at the central panel of director Peter Jackson's (The Frighteners, Heavenly Creatures) masterful cinematic triptych. This double-DVD set includes the PG-13 theatrical version of the film, and a second disc with over two hours of special features and extra content.

A "Special Extended Edition" of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring will arrive in stores November 12. This extended edition of the film contains more than 30 minutes of never- before-seen footage created for the home video release. This version of the film, available on DVD and VHS, will likely have an R rating. The "Special Extended DVD Edition" will be contained in a four-disc set with two discs containing the film, and two discs with more than six hours of added content, produced specifically for the DVD. These extras will plunge the viewer into the complex landscape of Middle-earth, and reveal how Peter Jackson and his team of skilled artists and technicians created a painstakingly beautiful, and faithful re-creation of Tolkien's world.

A collector's DVD gift set will also be released on November 12 in time for the holiday season. This gift set will include the "Special Extended Edition" with box art packaging conceived and designed by famed Tolkien illustrator Alan Lee. Included with the DVD are custom bookends designed and sculpted by Sideshow Weta, the artists that crafted the astonishing theatrical visual effects for The Lord of the Rings. The gift set will also include the National Geographic "Beyond the Movie" DVD, containing two previously unreleased featurettes and a photo gallery. These extras are topped off with a set of exclusive, collectible Decipher game cards. </font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">

Well, I guess I'll just react. It think the discs sound great. 4 audio commentaries, and 6 hrs of other features add up to 20 hours of special features! This may as well be the hugest film disc ever! :D

Four commentaries! I'm stunned. I thought it was just going to be: 1. PJ, 2. The Hobbits, 3. Tech guys. I'd like to know how the commentaries are arranged. There are over 30 participents. Roughly 7-8 per commentary. Now, I don't like overcrowded commentaries, but it may work. Here's a stab at guessing who's on what:
1. PJ, writers Walsh & Boyens, producers
2. Cast: Wood, McKellan, Astin, Boyd, Monaghan, and tons more! (I'm hoping for Chris Lee, knowing how much of a Tolkien enthusiast he is!)
3. Design and such: Lesnie, Shore, quite a few more
4. Technical: Taylor, Rygiel, Cook, etc.

The only disappointment w/ the first 2 discs is there's no Isolated Score. :(

On to discs 3-4:
It's nice to see that they're splitting the discs into their own titles. And I like the features listed. A nice touch is the slideshows with the commentary. I hope they abandon just the 6 hours for something like 7. Because 2 DVD-9's can hold up to 8. Another disappointment is that Costa Bote's documentary on the film isn't listed. For more info on that, <a href="http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=11744" target="_blank">click here.</a>

But these aren't the full details. Hence the "complete list of Content to be Provided at a Later Date" and the "And much more!"s. So there's still time for those features. Not that I have a problem with these alone. :D

seems like nobody been replying since Rizor's posts, except Rizor himself. Well i think u posted it the info while everybody went to other sites and found out for themselves at the same time. I found out four days ago. But i think on everybody's mind is that is it a better deal to buy the 2-disc or the 4-disc set? From what i read, none of the features on the 2-disc will be on the 4-disc. :( , so the two sets are completely different from each other. I hate this don't u, which is the best choice, i will get the 4 disc, but 208 minutes is a long movie, and since the deleted scenes will be in the movie, the movie might drag :(. There is a reason why PJ deleted these scenes and by putting them back in the movie might be a bad idea. I would rather have it seperate from the movie and have the option of putting it in the movie, or not to, like what the X-Men dvd did, but hey what are u going to do?

I'll probably just get the 4-Disc. It seems like a better buy to me. 20 hours of special features compared to 2. And just for $10 more! By the way, I have much of whats on the 2-disc. They're all pretty much TV specials promo material.

Here's a response from IGN that pretty much sums up my feelings:

</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial"> The two-disc and four-disc editions of Fellowship of the Ring will not share any extras outside of maybe the trailers (those aren't confirmed on the four-disc one yet).

The initial release is targeted to the mass-market that doesn't really care about extras, which is why there is a fullscreen version on the way. Most of those extras are specials that aired on TV before the movie was released, as well as promotional material for The Two Towers and the upcoming video game. It's basically "fluff" compared to what is being done on the extended DVD set.

That set is targeted toward the hard core fan and DVD collector, which is why it's only coming in widescreen and the extras are tooled more to the behind-the-scenes aspect as opposed to the promotional side.</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">As for your comments on the cut of the movie itself, I actually downloaded FOTR off the 'net and burned it after it left my theater (it only had a measly 1 and a 1/2 month run here!). So I already have the original (though bad quality). And then I'll probably tape it off pay-per-view or whatever. It isn't widescreen, but I'll be getting the other release so it doesn't really matter.

And maybe PJ just cut the scenes because the film was already too long. But here we have a better presentation of the film with DTS and all (although I'm not the biggiest techie). :)

You know, Rizor, you can get a copy of the DVD-Screener. Total of 1400 MBs, and it's available on KaZaA. Only download it if you plan on buying the DVDs. I'm only keeping it because I can't see the movie in theatres or on DVD. Not to mention, the scrolling warning provides a nice loophole that makes my ownership legal. :D It's a beautiful quality rip, almost indiscernable from VHS or DVD. Widescreen too.

I downloaded a cam version. Horrible sound and picture. Then I downloaded a whopper 700mb version. It's better. The sound (athough a bit of Galadriel's narration is inaudable) is fabulous. But the picture ranges from cruddy to great. It's not perfect, but bearable. But it'll do until I get my hands on the real DVD. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Back to my original post:

You have to download a few programs. To convert the avi to an mpeg-1 befor you can burn it.
-You dl a program called "VirtualDub"
Open your AVI there. Go to the "Audio" section, click on "full processing mode." Go to conversion and go click on the blank space option. On "Compression," select the one in its the 4----. I'm doing this by a bad memory. The site I used isn't working. This was all under the Audio panel.

Go to "File" "Save as WAV" and just wait as it does its thing.

-Download program called "TMPGEnc". Open it. And in the video input or whatever, put the address to where your avi is. Under audio input, select your wav. You may want to toy with it, but click start and wait a few hours. But also note that a cd only holds 80 minutes. So you'll have to convert it into sections if it's longer.

You can download everything off of KaZaA. And to burn the MPEG to a VCD I used a burning program called "Ahead Nero" or "Nero Burning Room." You just need one that lets you burn VCDs. Also, perhaps you can find a better tutoral. Little bit of usless news. It apears that the extended edition has offically recived a PG-13 rating. To check your self do the fallowing

1. go to this link to the MPAA website <a href="http://mpaa.org/movieratings/search/index.htm" target="_blank">http://mpaa.org/movieratings/search/index.htm</a>

2. type "lord of the rings" in the little box

From IGN DVD:

"Back when the Lord of the Rings Fan Club was announced, those who were the first to sign up were told that their names would appear in the credits of the upcoming DVD. Recently, those members have been contacted and told that their names would not appear in the August 6th release, but rather in the Special Extended Edition on November 12th.

However, due to that little delay those members will find something special when they watch the Extended DVD. Their names will appear in a list that is longer than the actual credits of the movie - a full 19 minutes. A brand new score by Howard Shore will also accompany the scrolling text.

Pretty cool."

Well, there's quite a bit of DVD News around the web!

TheOneRing.Net updated with their review of the 2-Disc (w/o the features), which also takes time to answer several questions about the set and even a complete listing of chapters!:
http://www.theonering.net/perl/newsview/8/1025894867

Fortunately, BBC's review does include the features:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/2002/07/04/lord_of_the_rings_fellowship_of_the_ring_2001_dvd_ review.shtml

I'm not fluent in French (or what I think is French), but there's an interview with PJ and what I suppose is a comprehensive look at the DVDs. It even has sceenshots of the 2-disc (features too) and shots of the Extended Edition!
http://numenoreen.com/set/image_04-07-2002.html

There's also other screenshots from the EE, with some details (although not much we haven't already read) from Lights Out Entertainment:

I have already decided that I am going to buy both DVD's. It's almost like getting two totally different movies, since none of the features on the 2-disc will be on the 4-disc. Plus the movie itself will be different on both. I have been able to easily justify buying both of the DVD's. I don't want to be forced to only be able to watch one version or the other.

I know this isn't technically DVD news... but it hardly seemed worth opening a whole new thread about...

Anyway... There will be TWO versions of an LOTR video game.

One wil be done by Universal Entertainment - from what I've seen of it in Playstation Magazine it looks pretty stupid... Kind of like kid stuff.

The other will be done by EA - and this one looks to be bad-ass, much more based on the movies (in fact using the movie characters - Aragorn looks like Aragorn in the movie)

Anyone else seen this? Anyone else interested? Anyone have a choice?

Is the Universal one the Hobbit based game? The screenshots I've seen are totally different than the book. They're portraying Bilbo as a kick-ass hobbit warrior with armor and all. He looks more like the guy from the Legend of Zelda!

Yes, Universal's is Hobbit-based. But it's pretty cartoony-looking. Think any of the mario bros games on N64 (but with better resolution of course).

The one that's super kick-ass looking is the one being done by EA.

Hold on... I'll go find some screen captures really quick

Well, in the past weeks or so, there's been quite a bit of news involving the dvd's.

The reason why you haven't been able to find a review of the set online is that NL doesn't want the 10 min preview for TTT to get online. So they haven't been shipping the disc to reviewers and they're not allowed to review it until August 6th. Much to NL's dismay, it seems like a few stores have been selling the August set early along with some internet sites shipping in advance.

So, it would be inevitable that screengrabs and the clips themselves are found online. http://www.theonering.net/movie/scrapbook/source/Ringer_Spy_Lutz (could be a tad slow)

And you can read some fan reaction to the DVD here:
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=84738

And what about the fullscreen vs. widescreen comparisons? These images may or may not be real. Seeing how the film was shot in Super 35 (allowing images at the top and bottom where the black bars would be), it's a bit odd that they'd pan & scan.
http://www.random.net.nz/debsoc/comparison/comparison.html

And you've all seen the front cover, well here's a shot at the back:

I can't believe that in less than 48 hours I will own the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on DVD. It is just mindblowing to me, and I can't possibly wait. My theater here has their second anniversary coming up, and they are showing the film at their theater. This maybe my last chance to see it in theaters for a while, so I will definetely catch it. I will look at some of my favorite parts on the DVD, but wait to see the whole thing until Saturday. I am going to buy this one, but get this, I am not going to buy the Extended Version of it. Why, you ask? Because I am instead, such a fan, that I am going to buy the whole gift set with that, the National Geographic special (I knew there was a reason I didn't buy it), the cards, and the awesome bookends. I can't wait to own that.

After many hours of being taunted by this question should I buy the DVD when it’s released on August 6th or should I wait and buy the November release, I’ve officially decided now that I’ll buy the DVD on Tuesday. Simply because I can’t wait. Then I’ll just have to buy the November release also because I know I’ll want that, especially the Director’s cut of the movie even if it means I’ll spend my money on two copies of the same movie…..it’s in times like these that I’m really glad I got myself a job this summer.

I think it may be because they haven't finished yet. It takes time to produce a DVD. Especially one that has about 6-7 hours of exclusive content created for the set alone. They have to re-edit to film, compose new music. And not to mention record and edit about 14 hours of commentary! Create menus, author the thing so every thing works properly....:o

But I think we can all expect a great set. It's from the producers of many of the Disney special editions (the great sets of Snow White, Toy Story Ultimate Edition, and many others).:)

Can't wait to have the November Edition in my hands. Though I probably can wait. I've chosen to skip Tuesday's edition. But the real endurence test is when I have it in my hands for only $15!:D

Well, some hate widescreen. I love it. But just to note, the VHS edition of the Extended Version will be Widescreen ONLY.

Some very cool news! The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) has a list of just about every feature with their appropriate running time.

Click here (http://www.bbfc.co.uk/) and search "The Lord of the Rings"

I've organized them with the list previously posted:
Disc Three
- The interactive map of Middle-Earth features about 10 minutes total of videos for Hobbiton, Weathertop, Ford of Bruinen, Rivendell, Lorien, River Anduin, and Amon Hen
- Animatic-to-storyboard-to-film (3 angles) for "The Bridge of Khazad-Dum" (approx 00:02:31)and "Nazgul Attack at Bree"(approx 00:01:45)
-Animatics for "The Stairs of Khazad-Dum" (00:02:18) and "Gandalf Rides Into Orthanc" (00:01:06)
- Here's a list with the times:
00:22:26:18 | J.R.R TOLKIEN CREATOR OF MIDDLE EARTH
00:20:00:12 | FROM BOOK TO SCRIPT
00:41:11:14 | DESIGNING MIDDLE EARTH
00:11:32:08 | COSTUME DESIGN
00:43:02:17 | WETA WORKSHOP
00:13:29:04 | STORYBOARDS & PREVIZ: MAKING WORDS INTO IMAGES

Disc Four
00:00:27:02 | TOUR INTRO-SIDE 4 (ELIJAH WOOD)
00:11:50:05 | A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A HOBBIT
00:15:33:11 | SCALE
00:16:15:13 | BIG-ATURES
00:12:27:07 | MUSIC FOR MIDDLE-EARTH
00:12:06:13 | DIGITAL GRADING
00:24:48:14 | WETA DIGITAL
00:14:02:00 | EDITORIAL: ASSEMBLING AN EPIC
00:12:33:21 | THE SOUNDSCAPES OF MIDDLE-EARTH
00:34:37:11 | THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE CAST
00:49:38:24 | CAMERAS IN MIDDLE-EARTH
00:07:20:21 | THE ROAD GOES EVER ON...
- Also: A multi-Angle editing decontruction of The Council of Elrond (approx 00:01:27) sequence featuring 8 alternate angles!

It thrills me to see such an amount of extras. And not the skimpy 5 minutes stuff too. Two 40 minute documentaries for Design and WETA workshops, a 24 minute doc on VFX, 34 minutes on the cast and much, much more!

And not to mention the 50 minute "Cameras In Middle-Earth" documentary. At first, I took it to be a little featurette on cinematography. But better yet, the enormous running time may suggest a behind-the-scenes documentary similar to the amazing one found on the Star Wars Episode I DVD! What I always wanted!!!!!:D

So that makes a new cut of the film with 30 minutes of footage, 4 audio commentaries, and nearly 7 hours of features on the remaining two discs!

Tolkien-Creator of Middle-earth featurette, From Book to Script featurette, Visualizing the Story section featuring Storyboards and Pre-viz featurette, Designing and Building Middle-earth section featuring Designing Middle-earth featurette, Costume Design featurette and Weta Workshop featurette, design galleries including The Enemy, The Last Alliance, Isengard, The Fellowship, Rivendell and Lothlorien, interactive Middle-earth Atlas with timeline, New Zealand as Middle-earth intertactive map with video, disc introduction with director Peter Jackson.

Disc Four - The Appendices Part II: From Vision to Reality

Filming section featuring a production photo gallery and the The Fellowship of the Cast featurette, A Day in the Life of a Hobbit featurette, Cameras in Middle-earth featuette, Visual Effects section and featuette, Post-Production section featuring Editorial featuette and a multi-angle presentation, Digital Grading featuette, Sound and Music featuette and Sound Design Demo, The Soundscapes of Middle-earth featurette, Music for Middle-earth featurette, The Road Goes Ever On featuette, disc introduction with director Peter Jackson.

All told, the 4-disc set is expected to include over 30 hours of unique content created just for this release. The discs will also feature additional DVD-ROM content and over 2,000 photos and conceptual sketches. And let me tell you... we've seen a few of those featuettes. These aren't 5-minute EPK pieces. They're much more substantial - 20 to 30+ minutes in many cases.

Wow. Now we know the members on the 4 commentaries and we also have great news of an isolated sound effects and isolated score (!) in 5.1 audio!!! Just when I thought this set couldn't get any more complete.

Unfortunately, the Digital Bits says there will be no Isolated Score or Isolated Effects track. Damn it! They could've lost the effects track, but why'd they have to take the score?!:(

if you pre-order the extended edition dvd from walmart.com,

it comes with a free schnazy lotr t-shirt.

sure, it's an XL so those of us w/ no chest and/or shoulders will be forced to wear it for pajamas, but what the hell...

Also, it seems that tickets to the Two Towers will be featured in specially marked packages of the 4 disc set.

do you mean that i could open my set and find tickets in it?

also, if you only had money for one DVD on the 12th which would it be, FOTR or AOTC

i'm tight for money now and i was trying to decide which (i was leaning towards AOTC, because i already have FOTR regular version)

but after seeing the spec of each, i've decided to just buy both on the 12th

so what if i don't eat for a few days:)

at least we now know where the break will be

according to the onering.net, it will be just after pippin says "where are we going" at the council of elrond

thats roughly around half way through the movie, so its good that PJ didn't just leave only the last 30 mins-45 mins on disc 2, he actually split the movie into two

no,

book one ends just as frodo passes out after the black riders are taken away by the river

and book two starts as frodo awakes in rivendell

I think it's a nice break. It was originally the layer skip on the 2 Disc version. I found it to be a great climax to the Council of Elrond and the first half. Afterwards, it's been decided what is to happen to the Ring and the second part in their journey begins after a few quiet scenes.

War Of the Ring has a very in-depth review of the Extended movie (not much on the extras). I only read a few new additions, but it seems that they reveal quite a bit. Even the moments we never knew were there!

yeah, but i've seen FOTR alot (the regular dvd) and its been a few months since isaw AOTC

and then i can spend the next 18 hours watching FOTR:)

I'll be watching AOTC first. I've been eagerly anticipating the release of the ultimate DVD of FOTR for many years now. (No kidding! I've got notes and my own dream specs of this release from years ago!). AOTC will be light fare in comparison. I may check a few things out on the LOTR set to see if everything's in good order. But I'll be watching the movie the next day and spending the next week or so going through the features. I'll be savouring the moment.:D

Digital Bits have posted the second page of their excellent review.

They've updated the first page to include notes on packaging and two hidden easter eggs! When I read them, they brought a huge grin to my face! The MTV spoof and the 3 and a half min "exclusive" preview of TTT from a few months ago

They even give us some details of what's in store for the DVD releases of the next two films!

Here are the instructions to unlock the special preview of TTT:

Disc Two: To access The Two Towers sneak peek trailer that was shown briefly in theaters at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring (4 min, 16x9, DD 5.1), go to the last page of the scene selections menu area and select the number "48" on the far right-hand side of the screen. Then navigate "down" to reveal a hidden Two Towers symbol. Press "Enter".

I really want this DVD. I've been wanting it since the films were still in production. I just knew this would come out with THE ultimate DVD experience. Can't say how, but I did. I'm very happy PJ and New Line didn't let us down. Aside from one or so minor detail (it appears you can't switch the audio tracks on the fly), this is the perfect DVD for me. All these months, maybe even years of waiting and I'll finally get it on Tuesday.

and while lOTR deffinetly has more bonus materials, AOTC is the best DVD i've ever seen when it comes to picture and sound

as for the movies themselves, i love both, but wiuth LOTR being 3:30, and AOTC only being 2:20

i'm more likely to watch AOTC more

Fellowship blows AOTC sky high. If you ask me, the debate between which transfer is better will go on forever. I am happy with AOTC though, they just ****ed up by not putting more action on the deleted scenes. Still, the two boast incredible transfers, but you have to admit, the Fellowship DVD is the best ever. And thank the maker it replaced Pearl Harbor as Best DVD Ever, a movie that isn't worthy of the edition it has.

Don't ever pay that much for DVDs! At the very least go to Wal-Mart, especially when they have sales. Or use computer savvy to find a cheaper copy or a used copy (used DVDs? they aren't like clothes... what's the difference?) on ebay, amazon, deep discount dvd.com, etc.
