View Full Version : The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (May 2nd 2014)

When SuperHeroHype spoke with producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach last week, the latter was non-commital about how many movies may follow this week's The Amazing Spider-Man despite already having a sequel in the process of being written.
As Tolmach told us:
"We knew that it was going to be more than one, and at the very least three. We're going to let this movie tell us what the story is."
But now the official Facebook page seems to have decided they may as well go ahead and make another trilogy.
As stated in a post on Monday:
"It's finally here! The Amazing Spider-Man is the first installment in a movie TRILOGY that will explore how our fave hero's journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents."
That capitalization of the word "trilogy" was our own, because even though Sony has already committed to a sequel before The Amazing Spider-Man opened, scheduling it for May 2, 2014, and even offered a potential tease in the end credits scene, there was no guarantee that having two movies would warrant a third. (Case in point: Nicolas Cage's Ghost Rider movies.)
Another sign that a sequel was definitely going to happen was Marvel Studios' recent decision to move their scheduled and still unconfirmed mid-May 2014 release to early August. Presumably that's to give Sony Pictures a bit more room with the Spider-Man sequel and a little more breathing space for their own Captain America sequel, which is being released in early April 2014.

Spider-Man 4, Raimi or no Raimi, could have competed. This whole remake plan of theirs is bitting them in the butt. Nitpicking Fanboys and Children LOVE the movie, but everyone else is like, "boring." The movie opened on Tuesday with $32 million and on Wednesday, the 4th of July, a friggin holiday, it dropped 30%. Word-of-mouth is killing the film. One Sony insider told Nikki Finke that Sony is now relying entirely on female audiences because the Andrew Garfield-Emma Stone love story is the only thing that's catching on.

Amazing Spider-Man helmer Marc Webb has come attached to direct Logan Lerman in The Only Living Boy In New York, an indie that had Horrible Bosses helmer Seth Gordon attached to direct. The Allen Loeb-scripted film is a twisted coming-of-age tale in which a young man (Lerman) learns that his overbearing father is having an affair. The son tries to stop it, only to become involved with the woman as well. With advice from a questionable quirky neighbor, the young man learns about love. Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa are producing, with John Fogel executive producer.

I am not to disapointed by the news, there was some good things about it that he did, but like many have said, it seemed like he was in over his head with this movie, i think it was the direction that took this movie down a notch. Garfield and the cast were the strong point not so much the film it's self.
I just hope Garfield and Stone are back, tho this movie wasn't the box office smash they expected so i am not sure how excited people are for a sequel... I just feel Spider-man movies need a serious long break before they continue doing movies, people are worn out by SM movies, just like for a while people were worn out by Batman movies

B&R is the only Batman movie that flopped. And that's because it sucked. No one was worn out. All 3 of Raimi's Spidey films were giant successes. No one was worn out. Make a movie people wanna see and they'll show up. Spidey Origins 2.0 wasn't one of those.

Thats ok. I'm interested in his new project though. Sounds interesting.
I actually liked the movie a good deal. A bit redundant to the 02 Spider-Man but good on its own. I found out later, that Webb wanted one of the central tenets of the film to be the fact that Peter was predestined by his father to become Spider-Man (like, his father put something in his blood or whatever, he's the only person the bite could have affected.). It was met with negative response and removed. That would have been a bad idea in my opinion, part of the appeal of Spider-Man is that it could have happened to anyone and Peter was just a normal dude in the right place at the right time.

I can't blame Sony for wanting to avoid that, since it's the exact same thing Universal did to Bruce Banner in Ang Lee's Hulk. Not really a movie you want to be stealing ideas from. Filmmakers should be using Hulk as an example of how not to do a comicbook movie.

I am not sure why they couldn't use Mary Elizabeth Winstead because she is not really that old and I think she could play a teenage role still. The American Teenager girl is not who i am fond of. It does make me wonder what is gonna happen to Gwen though since Emma Stone is returning.
Yeah I don't think Electro could carry a movie on his own. Electro as the muscle and Vulture as the brains of the operation, that I could see.
Also introducing Mary Jane and Harry seems like a bad move in my opinion. We've seen more than enough of those two characters from the Raimi films. I'm not sure where else we could go with Harry, and in regards to MJ that will just be used to create romantic tension which I don't really like as a plot device (one of the things I liked about ASM was that there wasn't a lot of romantic soap opera BS in it - Peter and Gwen got together almost immediately, and he told her that he was Spider-Man almost immediately. And then when he told her that he couldn't be with her anymore at the end she immediately figured out "Oh, you're saying that because my father told you to" which was awesome, and then at the end they didn't leave it unresolved and had him flat out say "Yeah, you know what, let's ignore that" which was also awesome).

year's The Amazing Spider-Man, ComingSoon.net spoke with Webb and confirmed that Foxx is his top choice. Today, Access Hollywood spoke with the actor and learned that, while he's anticipating getting a shot at the role, the deal is still not quite locked.
“Fingers crossed it all works out,” Foxx says. "...I have a little daughter, four years old, and what’s crazy is like, this past year she had a birthday where Spider-Man was the theme... I haven’t sprung it on her yet, but she will go crazy!"
The character of Electro has never definitively appeared on the big screen, though some fan speculation has suggested that the mysterious figure (played by Michael Massee) featured in The Amazing Spider-Man's end credits was, in fact, our first look at the character. First appearing in 1964's "The Amazing Spider-Man" #9, Electro's real name is Max Dillon and he has the power to control electricity.

The he wasn't running at the guy with the gun. Ben heard a disturbance, and walked towards it out of curiosity and concern. Then the robber wound up running towards him, only to trip and fall, losing his gun in the process. Ben then ran towards the gun in order to keep it out of the hands of the criminal. It didn't work out quite as he'd planned, of course.

Marvel movies tend to borrow heavily from the Ultimate Marvel universe, and in that world Elektro is less goofy. Like so many characters in the Ultimate Universe, Elektro was the result of experiments for a new Super Soldier. In his case, it was Hammer Industries who played with Dillon's genes and turned him into Elektro. Hammer then sold his services to the Kingpin. I suspect this is more along the lines of what we can expect.

I still fail to see how that version of Electro is less goofy. Without doubt the original costume would be the laughing-stock of the comic book movie universe if they went there but I also have serious problems with this look too.
Like Franklin, I just don't see Electro on the big screen. I have to declare a bias here in that I saw the TASM and thought it was okay but nowhere near the first two Raimi Spider-Mans. He just doesn't fit into the Spidey universe as a primariy villain. Maybe he isn't the main one in this movie, but I think Sony is using their 3D brains too much, thinking about how great he'll look blasting his electricity here and there in 3D, and less about realism. Yes, it is a comic and realism can go out the window, but when putting together that Electro will probably be a minor villain, why not "keep it real" and bring in the Shocker? Same visual effects and I think he'd look a lot better in a movie than any version of Electro.
And sorry to all if this sounds racist, because its not intended to be, but having a black Electro is an odd choice for the character in retrospect of the character's comic book history.

If this rumor is true, it will pretty much ruin the movie for me. I don't mind a secondary villain, especially one like Rhino, who generally just serves as hired muscle for someone else. The Rhino is supposed to be a huge, dumb guy in an indestructable costume. If they want to hire Paul Giamatti as Doctor Octopus, fine. He'd be perfect for that. The Rhino, though? Absolutely not.
FranklinTard

Yea I was thinking more of a chiklis kinda guy, although I think Paul would do great, hes way too short. But what am I saying? Never even seen the first one.
I was all cool with Foxx playing Electro, but Giamatti in talks to play The Rhino is truly WTF news. The Rhino is a huge buff dude. Also, it seems odd that Giamatti idolized the character so much - the Rhino is mostly known for being a whipping boy who got his butt kicked by stronger characters. A dumb thug in every sense.

Marvel Studios could use a character named Miles Morales, but Miles can't be known as Spider-Man in a movie, or wear a costume which is clearly meant to be a variation on the Spider-Man tights.
The movie licenses owned by Fox and Sony encompass not only the lead characters of the franchise, but all ancillary characters as well. For Spidey, that meant his family, his various school friends and girlfriends, his villains except for Kingpin (who was part of the Daredevil license) and everyone at the Daily Bugle except for Ben Urich (who was part of the Daredevil license).
And yes, even if it were possible for Marvel Studio to use Ultimate Spider-Man, it would just piss people off.

Oscorp was going to be in The Avengers, yes. The negotiations to do so took so long that there wasn't time to put it in the finished film.
I don't think Marvel Studios has much interest in putting Spider-Man into an Avengers movie. The team line-up they've gone with is a more traditional one from the 20th Century. Spider-Man didn't become a member of the team until recently, and at that point the team had a very different line-up.
It would however have been fun to have a brief scene featuring some of the other New York superheroes fighting the Chitauri. Unfortunately, that would have been too distracting and confusing to a large portion of the audience.

The new suit to me is like Venom in Spider-Man 3. All the fans shouted, "We want Venom! We want Venom!" So the studio forced Venom into Spider-Man 3 and they got a bad movie.
When it came to The Amazing Spider-Man they re-designed the suit to show it wasn't just another sequal and all the fans moan, "We liked the Raimi suit! That doesn't look like the comic books anymore!" And so the studio has taken the Raimi suit out of the closet and changed it's eyes.
Personally I liked the suit in The Amazing Spider-Man, I'd maybe have made it a little brighter and made its eyes bigger. I liked the texture and the material they made it out of and I liked the style of it.
I just hope they come up with some new poster ideas this time around because they reused all of Raimi's posters for The Amazing Spider-Man only with the new suit. If they do that again it'll look just like Raimi's Spider-Man. Maybe that's what they want it to look like.

Um... the whole suit is different? The eyes are bigger but they are also noticeably white not golden, the suit has a definite cloth-like look to it rather than the rubber wet suit of before. The trademark Spiderman colours are more traditional and bolder along with clearly defined, black webbing on the costume exactily like the Raimi Spider-Man suits. The spider logo on the front is completely solid and different in its design. Its all different, but basically the same as the older Spider-Man movies.

The costume is different from the first movie, but it's the same from the Raimi trilogy. That's what he and everyone else is saying.

Pretty much, except that the web pattern is black now instead of silver. I never understood Raimi's decision to go that way. Sure, real spider webs aren't black, but they're not silver either.

They wrote Star Trek. Everyone hates but I liked it.
and transformers. and transformers 2. and cowboys and aliens. the island. one movie means the law of averages actually means something, but doesn't mean this won't be absolute trash.

They didn't really write it. They were sued by Bob Sullivan, the guy who actually wrote it, for copyright infringement.

At this point, I'd also prefer it if Marvel got back the rights. But like FOX, I see Sony doing everything it can to keep it.I couldn't agree with you more!!! Especially, just to see Spider-Man featured in the "Avengers" sequels!!!

As mentioned earlier on in this thread, Max Dillon/Electro will be played by Jamie Foxx.
Now, I wonder if Electro will possibly look like this:

Also, I don't know if this has been posted yet, but in the Amazing Spider-Man sequel, playing the role of Norman Osborn will be:
CHRIS COOPER

Personally, I would've preferred Bruce Greenwood, but Cooper will do I suppose!!!

That could be considered a spoiler. I assume that is why Neverending said, "Hey! There is a pic, click the link" and didn't just post the pic for everyone one to be spoiled with it.

Definitely a different look and probably origin story for Max Dillon's "Electro." I'm not digging it but whatever, it will be different. I've come to accept this of the new Spider-Man movies.

hey quick question, I never really got into the comics, now are all the villians just misunderstood? Or is there someone who is actually pure evil?

Lots of them were always bad, but the movies like to make the villains more complicated. While the movie version of Norman Osborn was a good man until backed into a corner by the threat of his government contracts being revoked, the original version from the comics was a corrupt businessman who set up his business partner, having him arrested for embezzlement.

And sorry to all if this sounds racist, because its not intended to be, but having a black Electro is an odd choice for the character in retrospect of the character's comic book history.
it is not racist it is just pc but foxx will turn in another wonderful performance as usual.
