Platinum Dunes' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Feature Alien Origin

Just announced for a Christmas Day, 2013 release last week, Platinum Dunes' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is set to feature a very non-traditional origin for its reptilian heroes. In fact, producer Michael Bay hints that the turtles may not be mutants at all.

Word arrives via Stuff We Like and a video of Bay speaking at last week's Nickelodeon Upfront in New York where he states:

"When you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie. These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable."

To be directed by Jonathan Liebesman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will feature a script from Josh Appelbaum, Andrew Nemec, Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and John Fusco.

The franchise, which began as a black and white comic book series in 1984, rose to tremendous popularity when it became an animated series in 1987. Following the first live-action film in 1990, the series spawned two live-action sequels, a live-action television series, a second animated series and a CGI feature film.

http://blog.viacom.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Nick-Upfront-Michael-Bay-1024x681.jpg

After an earth-rattling sizzle reel of his greatest hits – from The Rock to Pearl Harbor to the Transformers trilogy – Michael Bay gave the crowd a first look at the previsualization – filmmaker speak for a 3D, digitally animated storyboard – for Ninja Turtles, Paramount Pictures’ live-action reinvention of the franchise set to hit theaters next year. “We want this film to have the impact of a Transformers one,” said Bay. If the stunning previs is any indication, Bay is making good progress against that lofty goal in his role as producer. Another tidbit he offered up is that the Turtles origin story has been updated, from the decidedly 80s radioactive waste accident to an alien planet. The “teenage mutant” remains intact, however, for the brand-new CG-animated TMNT series debuting on Nickelodeon this fall – good news for those of us who grew up in a time when the names Leonardo and Donatello were more closely associated with pizza and kung fu than art.

I guess this isn't a joke. It's for real. :(

Michael Bay Responds to Fans About Making Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Aliens

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=88213

This weekend, we reported on Michael Bay's quotes from Nickelodeon's Upfront about his company Platinum Dunes' upcoming live-action adaptation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

He said: "When you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie. These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable."

Naturally, fans weren't too happy to hear that the turtles were now going to be 'an alien race' and there was a lot of negative feedback.

Michael Bay has now responded to the feedback on his official site with the following:

"Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world."

Paramount Pictures is planning a December 25, 2013 release date for the film.

I love how the director of the movie is saying 'Fans are gonna love it, I know it's different but you won't be disappointed.' Hey, how about this; why don't you go eff yourselves and not presume what we're gonna like especially since this whole project is basically 'yeah we know there's a huge fan uproar but we're doing it this way because it will make us more money.' It reminds me of that old Joel Schumacher interview before Batman and Robin came out. 'Batman Forever was for the families, but this next Batman movie is for the fans. We're going back to basics.'

Yet I can't get angry at them. I just can't because I know millions of people are going to see it regardless. Even people complaining about it are going to go watch it, hate it, then say 'well I was bored. Well I had an extra $15 lyin around. Well I hadn't been to the movies in a long time. Well I knew it would suck but I had to see for myself. Well....' And all the while they wonder why Hollywood keeps turning out crap after crap after crap.

Exactly, everyone complains about Michael Bay and yet how many people on these boards saw the latest crap Transformers movie? Hollywood doesn't need to make stimulating, interesting films (including blockbusters here) as long as people continue to support their garbage. http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=88452

Producer Michael Bay has posted a second statement about the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie that will be titled Ninja Turtles.

"Paramount marketing changed the name. They made the title simple. The characters you all remember are exactly the same, and yes they still act like teenagers. Everything you remember, why you liked the characters, is in the movie. This script is being developed by two very smart writers, with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles. They care VERY MUCH about making this film for the fans. Everyone on this team cares about the fans. Just give them a chance. Jonathan the director, is a major fan of the whole franchise. HE'S NOT GOING TO LET YOU DOWN.

MICHAEL"

This is in response to the rumor that the title had been shortened. It all started with quotes from Bay last week which revealed that the turtles in the upcoming movie would be of alien origin. Following that quote, Bay responded and so did director Jonathan Liebesman (read here).

Paramount Pictures is planning a December 25, 2013 release for Ninja Turtles.

New Ninja Turtles Movie to Start Filming This Year

As much as people would like to think the outcry of fans could change it, it's still happening. The Michael Bay-produced Ninja Turtles will step in front of the cameras this year, according to The Province. They're hoping to get rolling late this summer or early in the fall in Vancouver.

Michael Bay is producing through his Platinum Dunes production company with Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans) directing and a screenplay by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol). Another week, and another Paramount movie in trouble. First there was G.I. Joe 2‘s plot problems leading to reshoots and a release date delay. Then there was World War Z‘s problematic production and required reshoots and third act revision. Now it’s the Michael Bay-produced Ninja Turtles reboot. Paramount says it has pushed back the pic’s start date by 10 weeks in order to cut the budget $10M to $20M down to $125M. That means the release date also will push back: from Christmas 2013 to May 16, 2014. Initially, Paramount hired the Iron Man writing team of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway for close to $1 million to revamp Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for a fast-tracked live action feature film to be released in summer 2012. At the time, the studio was looking at this as its next huge franchise like Transformers. Then the Jonathan Liebesman-directed live action-CGI combo’s release date was pushed to Christmas 2013. Now Paramount tells me it’s pushed again to May 16th, 2014 — presuming that the studio’s cost target is achieved.

Why delayed reboot the movie?

Script revisions, which is a pretty good sign considering Michael Bay is involved. This is not a person known for well thought out scripts.

For the past few years, Hollywood has been ever more disinterested in developing a decent story. Instead, they've been going for lots of impressive visuals, explosions and big name actors. This formula worked too, sadly. 2012 however, seems to have been the tipping point where a lot of folks have finally had enough. Movies featuring spectacular eye candy and name recognition while skimping on story have been bombing all year.

Considering the massive amount of money the studios spend on actor salaries and CGI, spending a little extra time to develop a screenplay that moves from one plot point to the next and actually makes sense while doing so can't hurt anything.

What about Casey Jones? Tom Hardy?

Shredder? Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa?

This is very true. But action movies pay better paychecks and that's why most would do a big movie over small indie ones.

For Some reason I always thought Jennifer Garner would have been a perfect April and I think Jet Li would be a great Shredder and Jacki Chan would be a great voice for Splinter.

I said she wouldn't do a Michael Bay production. If Chris Nolan, James Cameron, or Steven Spielberg called, that would be a different story.

Truth is she probably got axed by Speilberg for comments then Bay insults. Also I think Fox has some smile on her face because Fox's character replacement sucked and fans missed her.

So the question now is, Reporter April or Lab Geek April? She'd be horrible in both roles. I read that Jane Levy (Suburgatory) and Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air) were up for the role, so I'm assuming they're going for the teenage Lab Geek version of the character. But with Megan Fox, considering she's older and whatnot, I can see them going with the Reporter version, which is of course, the more popular interpretation of the character, and long overdue to make a comeback. So if Fox made it happen then I guess it's not too bad then.

I'm Not Impressed for they could have gotten some great today Voice Characters for the turtles and I think near 20 or Teens would have fit best and also how about Splinter and Shredder cast first before the turtles for really thats the core of any really serious Turtle Adaptation. There is no good Turtle Story without Splinter and Shredder.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised by that cast. They didn't try to go with big stars. Granted, yes, they could have gone for more established voice actors, but considering how not greatly known these guys are, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. That they cast them ultimately for what they felt was good auditions, rather than simply trying to get names that they can attach to the movie.

I am for and welcome low key actors fine i guess I am just conserned they will not have a Shredder or a very good Splinter. I am thinking The Actor Who Voiced Oogway from Kung Fu Panda. I however want a really good Actor for Shredder. For really other then Kasey Jones there is not too many Human Live Actors really.

"Arrested Development" and "Up All Night" star Will Arnett has signed on to join the cast of the upcoming live-action/CG hybrid Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, says a story at The Hollywood Reporter.

Arnett's role is currently being kept a secret, but he joins Megan Fox in the role of April O'Neil, Alan Ritchson as Raphael, Jeremy Howard as Donatello, Pete Ploszek as Leonardo and Noel Fisher as Michelangelo.

This is the second big upcoming comic book-inspired role for Arnett. He's also set to voice Batman in The LEGO Movie.

To be directed by Jonathan Liebesman, the film features a screenplay by Josh Appelbaum, Andrew Nemec, Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and John Fusco, based on the characters created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is targeting a June 6, 2014 release.

Why would Will be a Splinters voice. Even Bay knows if have Splinter and Shredder they should be Asian in some form.

And how exactly do you know this of Michael Bay?

It's not like either of these characters have had any sort of consistency in voice actors.

Shredder:

Splinter:

Will could maybe voice Krang.

What? Do you know who Will Arnett is? Have you heard his voice? I could actually picture him voicing Shredder, Splinter or another bad guy. Krang? I... I just don't know what to say...

Arnett would be appropriate for any deep-voiced character, but he would obviously have to do a Japanese accent for either Shredder or Splinter since both characters are indeed from Japan. So, I don't know. This will be a mystery till they confirm a role.

Movie is not quite the same as cartoons. Today Modern audiences kins expect Splinter and Shredder having some sort of Asian Actor. Now you can do whatever Voice you want in a cartoon but I am assuming that Shredder if there is a Shredder would be a live action being and people want some bad mother to play Shredder.
I could live with Jason Statham being Shredder for he could be an american student who went to the dark side of the Foot. I would be ok with Statham because he does martial art well.
I guess my point Is Will just does not same big enough name for a Splinter or s Shredder. However then again I always considered those character big in the art that is Ninja Turtles.
Will Arnett seems too me more like a Baxter STalkman , Or a Casey Jones. I for one don't have to have Casey as a love match for April really. Casey Jones is crazy a bit and Will Has that.
If he is a voice person then he could be any number of people. Rocksteady and Bebop is a possibility. Then they could make him some type of Alien. For the rumor is they are fighting Aliens.
Really the only alien I know about in Turtles is Krang really and Demention X.

I am not minding her with no Red Hair for least they did go with having a Yellow Jacket which seems like homage to the 90s cartoon to me. For That April wore a Yellow Suit.
