Disney has set a July 26, 2013 release date for Thor 2.
Marvel Studios, which is in production on the Joss Whedon-directed The Avengers, is making a full commitment to Thor 2, with Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the title hero. Marvel will need to hire a director for that film because, I've learned, Kenneth Branagh won't be returning as helmer. Branagh, who directed the first film and watched it gross $437 million worldwide with a few territories still playing out, will likely be involved in some producing capacity. His exit was "mutual and amicable," I'm told. That means a big job is out there that a lot of directors and their agents will be chasing over the upcoming holiday.
Disney and Marvel have already slotted the Robert Downey Jr-starrer Iron Man 3 to open May 3, 2013.

so i apprently Branagh is not coming back.....which i think is a big mistake . I thought he did a great job on Thor one and that was a hard source material to make work and he was able to make it into a movie that was great and also make money.

I just like how the original Thor went from opening the summer season to its sequel opening at the end of July. You can tell that the studios are not entirely satisifed with its box office.

Yeah... but LATE July? That isn't a very high profile date. By that point, 95% of the big movies have been released. Thor's competition is gonna be August comedies and B-level action flicks.

What are you talking about The Dark Knight Rises and Captain America will come out in late july, if memory serves me correct isn't the final Harry Potter as well?
Harry Potter comes out on July 15. That's mid-July. Captain America and The Dark Knights Rises are indeed at the end of July, but not at the end of the month. Captain America still has to face-off the second weekend of Harry Potter and Cowboys & Aliens the following week. It has stiff competition. The Dark Knight Rises is being released the same month as Spider-Man. There's literally only a 2-week gap between them. They're gonna be fighting over the same audience.
Thor 2 is getting a free ride because it's the final July release and only has to compete with B-level August releases. So, even if July is jam-packed it has an entire month to stretch its legs.
Captain America doesn't have that. Cowboys & Aliens is in the way. TDKR doesn't have that. It has direct competition with another major superhero.

I think in this day and age with such high profile films (especially that have done well previously such as these films), they will still get a solid box office intake and the audience being split isn't so much of an issue. Yeah they ARE competing films but what isn't gonna be? Yeah it would be wisest if one film could claim the month but being realistic, there are only about 3 solid "summer months" and way more than 3 blockbuster films per summer. Thats kinda of the beauty (and downfall) of summer is you are so overwhelmed with so much. If it was the same day, yeah, that would be more of a split, but I don't know anyone that isn't gonna go see both The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man just because they have close release dates. They will have a few weeks apart and are solid franchises so they will surely both do well. And word of mouth is whats gonna keep them there. If TDKR does better than Spider-Man I doubt its gonna be because of the weekend thing, I think its purely gonna be a word of mouth issue, and vice versa. Both are gonna open well - just like most high profile films. Keeping them there is word of mouth and whether or not there is something else good released. If they released it in a crap release month such as September, sure it could wipe September's releases away for sure, but marketing wise, it's best for summer.

...yeah, but is that a bad thing? Going up against crap movies makes for a better Box-Office intake. What's the problem in that? I get what you're trying to say, but think of it this way, why go up against films that could take away from your gross, when you could just go up against crap movies and make a boat load of cash instead?

Marvel Studios announced today that Patty Jenkins will direct THOR 2, which will be released in theatres on Friday, November 15, 2013. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman will return to star in the film along with Tom Hiddleston. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce the sequel to this summer’s blockbuster THOR, which has grossed over $448 million worldwide to date.
Patty Jenkins previously directed MONSTER starring Charlize Theron, who won an Academy Award® for her performance in the film. Jenkins, who received an Emmy nomination for directing the pilot of AMC’s acclaimed series The Killing, has also directed episodes of Entourage and Arrested Development. Most recently, she directed “Pearl,” one of the five short films that comprise Lifetime’s original movie FIVE.
In addition to THOR 2, Marvel Studios is currently scheduled to release MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012, and IRON MAN 3 which is slated for release on May 3, 2013.
Jenkins is represented by CAA, Anonymous Content, and Alan Wertheimer.

Marvel Studios has found its Thor 2 director. I’m told that Marvel has set Alan Taylor, who was widely rumored to be on the short list to replace Patty Jenkins. Taylor is an accomplished TV director whose recent credits include Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and Nurse Jackie, and he directed the feature Palookaville. Jenkins got the job but then fell out over differences with Marvel on the sequel.

Christopher Eccleston has been set for the villain role in Marvel Studios’ Thor: The Dark World, starring opposite Chris Hemsworth in the role of Malekith The Accursed. If you don’t know who Malekith is, your Hall H privileges at Comic-Con are officially suspended. He is a super-villain in the Marvel Universe, the ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. In the Marvel Comics, he clashed mightily with Thor, and will go up against the hammer-wielding god of Odin in the film directed by Game of Thrones‘ Alan Taylor. He once wielded the Casket of Ancient Winters. We know Eccleston from Doctor Who, and he is repped by Principal Entertainment.

I've read Thor on and off since I started reading comics. He's had some good runs (the current volume is actually quite good).
Malekith hasn't been around for a long time.... haven't actually read any of his stories but know some of the history, he's definately a major Thor villain but I doubt he'll be the only one. I'm guessing Malekith takes on the Loki role for the film and we'll also see someone like Kurse show up.

Variety is reporting that actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje will be taking on two villain roles, sort of, for the upcoming Marvel Studios film Thor: The Dark World. He will be portraying Algrim the Strong and Kurse.
Algrim first appeared in Thor #347 and was one of the most powerful of the dark elves. He is given the task of killing Thor by Malekith the Accursed (set to be played by Christopher Eccleston). He is betrayed by Malekith who tries to kill Thor by allowing both the god of thunder and Algrim to fall to their deaths. While both survived, Algrim developed amnesia from the event and is transformed into the much more powerful being Kurse.
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje has appeared on screen in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, The Bourne Identity, and played Mr. Eko on "Lost."
Thor: The Dark World reunites Chris Hemsworth with Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, and Natalie Portman as the love interest Jane Foster. Alan Taylor ("Game of Thrones") is stepping behind the camera for its November 8, 2013 release date.

I liked it a great deal, overall. The majesty of Asgard and the creepy frozen wasteland of Jodenheim were compelling, and I wish more of the story had taken place there. The fish out of water tale of Thor being banished to Earth had the right balance of humor and adventure. Hemsworth was great in the role of Thor. Portman's Jane Foster wasn't very strong, but the script didn't give her much to work with. Besides, I can look at Natalie all day. She just has a way about her.
I'll admit that Loki was kinda weak as the villain of Thor. Instead of being a power mad, would be king who'd looked into the abyss as we saw in The Avengers, Loki was only a mischievous son looking to find his father's favor and remove the favorite son, Thor from the picture. He never came off as a real threat, but instead merely misguided.

I don't disagree, that wasn't the point. The point was that this film is about six months out and we don't really know anything, and I was wondering if maybe Marvel was a little unsure about it. Maybe that will change when Iron Man 3 comes out, then they can move forward.
