“They had to invent a trilogy out of nowhere. It was plot-driven and complicated. I remember talking to [Gore Verbinski, director of the first three films] at certain points during production of 2 or 3 and saying, ‘I don’t really know what this means.’ He said, ‘Neither do I, but let’s just shoot it.’ This guy is this guy’s dad, and this guy was in love with this broad. It was like, ‘What?’”

His confusion was apparent onscreen. I was equally confused.

That sounds about right.

It's nice to hear him say this, but I have my doubts as to whether or not he really did feel this way. It seems that every actor always seems to admit that they were against a movie years later. These comments are said when they are doing their media run for the sequel after the fans were disappointed by the previous installment.

Maybe it is in the contract to not say anything bad about the movie until a period of time after the actual release date. Who knows?

Yeah... normally you're not supposed to badmouth a movie you're promoting. It goes against the whole... promotion aspect of it.

I agree. The thing is that people rarely seem to stand by their choices when a film is considered a let down. Everyone always seems to be apologetic and then say "this one won't be like the last". I'm not saying that these words aren't the truth, but it seems like this is the common move nowadays.

Its a thing where its sounds like he is trying to fix previous mistakes. This is the oldest hollywood ploy to get people to see a new movie if hated the previous installment. But honestly people flock to Depp so this is not needed unless he really wanted to say things.

He was filming what could be the weirdest movie in film history besides The Fountain. So yeah, I can definitely understand his confusion.

True... but I think it has always been that way. Filmmakers try to please an audience and consider it a disappointment if they don't.

I was NOT a fan of the last two. They were really long and kinda boring.

I can't say I was confused by the last two at all. I honestly found the plot easy to follow.

Pirates 2 and 3 is so confusing that it reminds me of the one moment off Friends when Joey is describing the Bamboozle game. Haha

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Johnny Depp admitted that he does these films for the money.

I guess it's suppose to seem surprising that he doesn't do it for the love of acting?

He could also be doing them for his kids.

Couldnt that be kind of taken out of context though?

Well, he's promoting "The Rum Diaries" which is a passion project for him. "Pirates" is the type of movies he has to make in order to get those small quirky films greenlited.

That's because they were filming Pirates 2 and Pirates 3 back to back with unfinished scripts. Which was a very big mistake that they had made! :nono: .
