View Full Version : Superhero Overload in 2012?
Neverending

It's being reported that WB has scheduled the new Batman movie for July 20, 2012. That got me excited till I realized that The Avengers and Spider-Man 2.0 are also scheduled for 2012. So, in one year we're going to get movies featuring Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, and Thor. Isn't that a bit...excessive?! People wonder when the superhero genre is gonna die. It might happen in 2012.

You know I was juuuuuuuuuuuuuust thinking this exact same thing today, weird. I think the whole comic book genre is getting watered down, and the good ones are going to have some of their thunder stolen from the masses of mediocre ones that are sure to be coming. Kinda like how when Gladiator came out, we were given King Arthur, Alexander, 300, etc. There will be some good ones, but again I think we're gonna get a wave of some that are better than others.

Wow, this only strengthens my estimation that the new Spider Man is going to flounder.

Sony should have just done Spider-Man 4 in 2011 with Sam Raimi. That would have had less risk of underperforming at the box office.

So what, it's gonna be a good year in movies. With all these superhero flicks they are gonna bring out, maybe we can finally see the death of the worst movie genre of all time, the romantic comedy.

I see those two moving to 2013 - unless Wolverine is released in June and TMNT in August. Even then, they're gonna be ridiculously over-shadowed.

And nobody said Cap and Thor are coming out in 2012. Neverending said films featuring those characters are set for 2012; The Avengers, which is set to feature them, Iron Man, and the Hulk, is supposed to come out in 2012.

Overload? Perhaps, but the genre seems to have survived it.

To be fair, most of those characters aren't in the same league.
Just getting Batman and Spider-Man in the same year is a big deal. Batman dominated in 1989 and 2008. Spider-Man dominated in 2002 and 2007. These are two heavyweights. It's like if you released a Star Wars and Indiana Jones movie in the same year. And now add Iron Man to the mix. 2012 is going to be a peak in the genre. No question about it.

Ninja Turtles movies is a very cool thing if ask me. But isnt there gonna be The Man Of Steel Opening in 2012.
My figuring is comics need Avengers, Spider-Man and Batman if the Hobbit comes out in December for The Year of Middle Earths return is a big one whenever it is so why not get a good movie year comic wise as well.
Spider-Man reboot may flounder but maybe just maybe they will move and have a better showing not so close to Batman.

The Hobbit will be a hit, but it's difficult to tell if it'll dominate at the box office. ROTK is the only installment that beat the competition. The first movie was outgrossed by Harry Potter and the second by Spider-Man.

They don't have much options. May has the Avengers. June isn't high profiled enough and the next Star Trek is supposed to be released in that month. And, August is too low-profile. SONY dropped the ball by not making Spider-Man 4 with Sam Raimi in 2011.

I think it will do well, it won't get killed, it'll break 100 mill opening weekend. The Raimi franchise was stale as hell and very repetitive and Raimi and the cast with the exception of Franco phoned Part 3 in. It's time for change, it worked for the Bat franchise when Nolan revamped it. Plus it's Spidey, the kids will still eat it up. As long as Dunst is gone, I'm happy.

Very unlikely. If the Empire Strikes Back couldn't outgross Star Wars then there's no hope for Batman 3. $533 million is one of those rare things that only James Cameron can accomplish.

Agreed. I don't think any franchise has ever produced consecutive $400+ million dollar films. Even Star Wars took 22 years - and three films - to do it.

Yeah, but $533 million is difficult to repeat. Batman 3 can gross $400 million and it still wouldn't be as successful. That's a $133 million difference.

With 3D I could see it making around the same amount quite easily; add to that the fact that it may be filmed with IMAX cameras throughout and it's shaping up to be quite the experience. Plus, Nolan comes across as only wanting to make another sequel if there is a way of taking it to another level and improving upon TDK. So I think it's going to be something really special.

I agree with Ramplate. Also, with Avengers, I think what Whedon should do is accept that this movie should basically be the comic come to life and commit it to that. Have the heroes fighting their enemies on the streets in a bunch of crazy chaos. This is what Spiderman 2 did so well, especially with the train scene. It felt like the comic book action was simply leaping off the page.

I remember the rope, and the terrible stock footage they used over and over of Spidey crawling up the wall of a skyscraper. I was only six or so when that show was on, and it was obvious to me that he was being hauled up the building by a rope. His hands weren't moving nearly fast enough for him to scale upwards that quickly.
I don't think there will ever be a "Superhero Overload." At this point, it's just another movie standard in a long line of them. Nobody ever asks if there are too many buddy cop movies coming out this year. Murder Mysteries, Courtroom dramas, romantic comedies, horror movies, westerns, spy thrillers, sword & sorcery, etc. They all have their highs and lows, but they always continue on every year. The superhero genre was all but ignored for most of the 20th Century in Hollywood. It's only right that they make up for lost time.

I liked the action during the train scene. It was one of the few moments from SM2 that I enjoyed, but felt it was ruined by the awkward stopping of the train (and McGuire's ridiculous face), and the wonderfully convenient car that just happened to contain all of the nicest and most trustful New Yorkers that day.

I thought some of the ways McGuire delivered some of his lines were rather silly - and yeah his facial expression is also kind of silly.

Sadly, the Good Samaritan laws are in place for a reason. If they weren't there, people really would sue their rescuers. A woman in California is being sued because a judge decided that a woman in a car crash wasn't in need of rescue by her friend. She was paralyzed in the crash, and has decided to sue her friend for pulling her from the wreck.
Within any given population, a certain level of douchbaggery is inevitable.
