It's kind of the principle of the thing. Selig cand overturn this, because then he has to overturn the next, then people will be arguing that some other pitcher should have had a no-hitter or whatever 5 years ago. That is a whole can of worms that Selig should not open.

It will probably cause replays to some degree, though I know Selig is against it.

JBond
06-03-2010, 08:28 PM
Selig can tell them to shove it on the others and ones that he doesnt like.

Lol, yeah I'm sure no one would have a problem with that at all.

Man, we really need to stop leaving it up to the fans to vote on the all star game...

JBond
06-03-2010, 11:47 PM
I forgot if I ever said it in this thread, but I think there should be a committee to decide on the players based on stats. I don't want to watch the Phillies play the Yankees on All-Star Day. The NL leader in RBIs, Brewers' Casey McGehee, is being beat out by Polanco who isn't even their regular 3rd baseman and has unamusing stats.

donny
06-03-2010, 11:50 PM
I think he is, actually, right now he's just hurt. But that's beside the point, because the bigger travesty is Rollins leading the short stops, and Troy Glaus isn't even in the top 5 for 1st Basemen, which I know, with Prince, Howard and Pujols it's the hardest position to make it in. Bust as of right now, Glaus is doing as well, if not better than all of them.

It's a sham.

ViRUs
06-04-2010, 10:16 AM
I agree, if the fans cant get it right, which they never do, then they should really stop. That goes for all sports too.

I used to compare stats for pretty much everyone before I voted, and I voted for the best guy. That was when I was into baseball a little bit more though. That and my votes never really seemed to matter....

FranklinTard
06-04-2010, 10:25 AM
i don't care if the fans vote for the starters. but the other players should be chosen based on their stats.

wait what am i saying, all star games are stupid and 100% for the fans.

draft tonight. hopefully we get machada with the second pick. other than him there is a couple pitchers, but the college guy hasn't impressed this season and high school pitchers are so risky (just ask the pirates), and we don't have a short stop for the future, kill two birds with one stone.

FranklinTard

yea i saw they got him, figured they would go 2/3 in some order.

high school pitchers are so risky though... i'm not the biggest fan of using a top pick like that but huntington has a good track record at the moment.

all this hubub about strasburg, i really hope he throws jones some fastballs, jones eats them up and hasn't had anyone challenge him in a while. also if mccutcheon could get a lead off jack... it would be perfect.

His pitching motion is concerning, at least it was a couple of years ago. Didn't see the debut. Mark Prior had the same "inverted W" pitching motion and completely destroyed himself.

Arrieta was pretty good last night in his debut. 6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 4 BB (2 intentional), 6 K, W (1-0) (4.50 ERA)

JBond

I'll always remember Maholm as the guy who almost gave me a concussion. He was pitching/batting at a game I went to in 2008 and a line drive almost took out my head just past the third base line (great seats, otherwise). I honestly had to duck. Instead it hit the girl behind me in the chest, bounced off and literally landed in my lap. My sister took it and claimed it.

C.C. Sabathia was pitching that day. We won in the 12th inning with a walk-off hit by JJ Hardy. One of the best games I've been too.

Elbow injuries are easier to come back from actually with tommy john surgery. Labrum tears are very hard to come back from for pitchers and they're in the shoulder.

Not kidding, tommy john surgery is pretty common now and much easier to return from than labrum surgery. Doesn't mean everyone comes back from it. Alfredo Simon had it for the Orioles and was back in the big leagues 13 months later as our closer.

Pretty active trade deadline. I thought the O's should've traded more than we did. At least we've got Buck Showalter joining us on Tuesday.

Strasburg will be fine. He'll be back in 2012 throwing just as hard as ever. Alot of pitchers come back from Tommy John throwing harder than they did before hand because they double wrap the tendons in the elbow. I doubt Strasburg will throw any harder because he was already throwing gas but its far from a career ending injury.

I think Volstad was completly out of line throwing at him a second time and that Morgan was completly justified in charging the mound, and now it's not over because Sanchez decided to get involved and I'll be surprised if there isn't some retribution coming to him from the Nats pitching staff.

rangers giants... in a battle of the least watched world series of all time.

This is some interesting stuff right here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Series_television_ratings

Notice the declining ratings towards the end of the Yankee's 90's championship runs, only really picking up in the 2001 season, which could be explained with the rally-round-the-flag-and-baseball sentiment of the time.

You have to take into account championship or exposure fatigue. Yeah the Yanks won last year, but in terms of overexposure, most of the country's baseball fans are turned off at this point by Yanks/Red Sox coverage--that might even extend to Philly with 2 series showings in the last 2 years. I might expect a Rangers-Giants series to garner the highest ratings of all the matchups.

bbf2

I think Giants/Yankees or Rangers/Phillies would draw bigger ratings than the other matchups personally. Reason being that the average public would have a team to root for (Rangers/Giants) and a team to root against (Yankees/Phillies) so they'd want to tune in.

If it was Yankees/Phillies, there would definitely be a sense of "Ugh, who cares who wins between these jerks." Plus they are the last two WS winners so there isn't any drama about a long suffering fanbase or whatever. And no one outside the East Coast would remotely care.

On the other side of the spectrum people might say "Good for them, but I don't really care who wins between these random teams" with a Rangers/Giants series.

But if you mixed and matched so there was one underdog (whose fanbase has never won a world series before) and one villain (who won the WS in the last two years)? That'd be the most compelling story, I think.

Between the two matchups I think Giants/Yankees would be much more compelling to the general public than Phillies/Rangers since you get an East coast-West coast thing, and the Yankees are obviously bigger villains with bigger stars. That being said a Cliff Lee revenge game vs. Roy Halladay in Game 1 of the world series would be amazing, and that's what I'm rooting for personally.

JBond
10-14-2010, 03:34 PM
Yeah, Giants/Yankees would be great. But you're underestimating how many Yankee fans are across the whole country that are just fine with seeing them win every other year.

I actually heard the Yankees described as "underdogs" this year. Multiple times. And when they won in 2009 they had "ended their drought."

Yankees ahead 6-5 top of the 8th. Most patient team in baseball. Wait for Wilson to hand the ball to Washington and beat up on the relief staff. The amazing thing about this team over the past two seasons is for all the huge salaries and power hitters, it's their ability to take on pitches, get a read on the starter, do enough to get him out of the game and string together enough runs to turn games around. Only one Yank run off a HR (Cano solo shot) the rest was just good, smart hitting and base running. Hopefully Wood holds up and then it's on to MO in the 9th.

Dementia Battle Lands Baseball Icon in Hospice
Dementia and disease complications are ready to claim the life of Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson. Anderson has been placed in hospice care in his California home due to complications from dementia, his family said in a statement released Wednesday. Anderson, 76, had successful stints as manager for both the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers.

"We are very sad to hear the news of Sparky's failing health," said Reds president and CEO Bob Castellini in a statement. "Every day here we are reminded of his contribution to the success of this proud franchise. The Reds' family offers its prayers and support to Sparky and his family during this difficult time."

Anderson led the Reds from 1970-1978, guiding them to four National League pennants and World Series titles in 1975 and '76. He was then manager for the Tigers from 1979-95, winning a World Series title in 1984.

Anderson's teams went 2,194-1,834 in his 26 years of managing. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000 by the veterans' committee.
