NHL Hockey is almost here. The preseason is winding down and I'm sure other hockey fans here have an opinion on who's going to take home the cup this year. Feel free to discuss everything Hockey, including the up-coming 2010 Winter Games taking place in Vancouver this Februrary.

Hoping my Avs are respectable this year.
Losing Joe will be a big loss and still haven't been able to get a good goalie since the King left. Hoping we don't end up like Philly in that way. Gone are the good old days of Sakic and Forsberg, Blake and Roy... cup potential.

Sounds like he's giving up on the whole thing. A team in Hamilton would be awesome... for Canada of course but sad for Phoenix. Maybe my numbers are off but I think Phoenix has been regularly losing millions each year. Ultimately the team will have to move and maybe Balsillie will get his wish then.

Balsillie will get his wish, he just won't be an owner.
The Coyotes haven't made a penny in profit since moving from Winnipeg in 1997. They lost at least $30 million the past three years and some estimate with this court drama the team will lose $70 million this year. Tickets for the home opener were just $20 and $10.
The NHL is spending just at the cap basement, meaning as long as the NHL is operating the team they won't spend more money than they have to.

Yes! I love my new job, I've already seen the Capitals players on two different occasions. I work at the airport hanger and right by where the private planes/jets park so I always see the sports teams as they board onto their plane. I've yet to see Ovie though, I have seen Varlamov, Clark and a few others. I don't know what I would do if I saw Ovechken.

Definitely sucks for the Wings:
Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen has suffered a torn ACL and will be out for at least four months, the team announced Friday.
Franzen was injured in Thursday night's 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, a game in which Franzen scored the game-winning goal during the second period.
"It's a huge impact because he's a huge player for us," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock told ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun on Friday. "But like I always say when things don't look good, we just have to find a way. Somebody will get an opportunity now."
It wasn't clear from the Wings' announcement at what point in the game Franzen was hurt.
Franzen, a native of Vetlanda, Sweden, was Detroit's second-leading scorer last season with 34 goals as the Wings' back-to-back Stanley Cup bid was thwarted in seven games by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Right winger Marian Hossa had 40 goals.
Franzen, 29, a third-round pick by Detroit in 2004, has 84 goals and 61 assists in four-plus NHL seasons with the Wings.

I'm not sure if this will work, but it's interesting:
Bettman meets with Quebec City mayor
QUEBEC CITY, Quebec -- The mayor of Quebec City has spoken with the NHL about the possible return of the Nordiques to the NHL.
Mayor Regis Labeaume said Saturday he met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman along with former Nordiques owner Marcel Aubut. The mayor adds that the talks in New York on Friday were "very profitable, very worthwhile."
The talk revolved around the need for a new arena, the need for a good owner and the need for corporate support, according to ESPN.com's Pierre Lebrun.
Bettman encouraged the mayor to continue trying to get a new arena built, but made no promises, according to LeBrun. They also agreed to stay in touch.
Bettman said this month he would consider Quebec City as a possible home to an NHL team if it followed through on plans to build a top arena and if a team were for sale. The Nordiques were sold in 1995 and moved to Denver as the Colorado Avalanche.

This is an equal hate opportunity for all of LA.
Except Anaheim isn't part of LA at all and doesn't have the same fan base so that doesn't make any sense. Different city, different county, its 40 miles away, longer than the distance from Baltimore to Washington DC. I would know since I've lived in both. In fact most Anaheim fans hate LA teams/fans with a passion - there are huge differences between the fan bases (a lot of it is social, economic, and even racial divides).
Your anger is directed at the Dodgers, but Ducks fans are Angels fans who dislike the Dodgers and loathe the LA Kings. That's like your basketball team being eliminated by the Wizards and so you decide you now hate the Ravens, or your baseball team being eliminated by the San Francisco Giants so now you hate the Raiders. The only connection is that Arte Moreno is retarded and decided to name the Angels the "LA Angels of Anaheim" which every agrees was stupid and was supposed to bring in LA fans (it didn't) but only polarized the fan bases even more.

Shouldn't be too long before the Caps get Ovie back it seems:
ARLINGTON, Va. -- Alex Ovechkin says he was joking when he told a reporter over the weekend that he could be out more than a month.
The Washington Capitals star practiced lightly Monday and said he would actually miss about a week.
He hasn't played since leaving a Nov. 1 game against Columbus after he was hurt in a scrum. The Capitals said last week that Ovechkin, whose 14 goals and 23 points lead the team, was week to week with what they called an upper-body problem.
Ovechkin, who was quoted by Yahoo! Sports on Saturday night as saying he could miss four or five weeks, insisted his left shoulder was not affected by the still unspecified injury, animatedly flexing the joint and telling reporters with a smile, "The shoulder's fine, see?"
Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau ruled Ovechkin out for Wednesday's home game against the New York Islanders, but held out hope that his superstar could be ready by the weekend. Washington hosts Minnesota on Friday and travels to New Jersey on Saturday.
"I know Alex's determination is he wants to play," Boudreau said. "I don't think Wednesday's an option, but I'm not counting anything out after that."
Added general manager George McPhee: "We'll see if he can play this weekend. There's that hope, but we want to be smart about it. ... He's a guy you almost have to hold back. You don't want any setbacks."
Ovechkin, wearing a yellow, non-contact jersey, joined his teammates about 55 minutes into Monday morning's practice.
He skated while the rest of the Capitals finished their workout, pausing briefly to autograph a jersey for a fan who opened a door in the practice rink and shoved it through, then took part in light shooting drills with assistant coach Bob Woods and teammate Eric Fehr once the rest of the team departed the ice.
Most of Ovechkin's attempts were wrist shots, though he did wind up on a couple of soft slap shots from long range, once raising his arms in his familiar celebratory pose after finding the net on a drive.
"It was easy shots, no hard ones," he said. "I don't want to rush my body to make some real hard shots."
Ovechkin reported none of the discomfort that forced him to cut short a Friday session in Sunrise, Fla.
"Now, it's no pain. It's progress, I think," he said. "I'm happy about it."
About an hour after practice ended, Ovechkin was back on the ice for a 15-minute skate with strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish.
Also, Michael Nylander, who has not played this season because Boudreau doesn't think he fits into the team's system, cleared waivers Monday. McPhee said the Capitals were weighing their options with the veteran center and hoped to have a resolution by Tuesday, when he plans to attend GM meetings in Toronto.

Crosby wins second Lou Marsh Award:
Sidney Crosby has been honored for the second time as Canada's athlete of the year.
Crosby, who led the Pittsburgh Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup, was named the winner of the Lou Marsh Award on Tuesday. He also won the award, which is chosen by a panel of Canadian sports journalists, in 2007.
"I realize this is an individual award, but without the effort of our team we wouldn't have won the Stanley Cup and the year would not have been as special as it turned out to be," Crosby said before Tuesday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers. He went on to score a goal and assist two others in the Penguins' 6-1 win over their cross-state rivals.
Crosby, 22, was chosen over five other finalists: Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns; skier John Kucera, who won the downhill at the 2009 World Championships; speedskater Christine Nesbitt; tennis doubles specialist Daniel Nestor; and UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.
"I feel fortunate to have won this award in 2007 and appreciate the honor this year," Crosby said. "To be selected among all the other great Canadian athletes is very special to me."
The Lou Marsh Award is named for the late sports editor of The Toronto Star and has been awarded since 1936.

Brodeur's a good goalie but that shutout record is a little skewed based on all those years when the Devils played the trap so well. I'm a goalie so I know when you have a great d in front of you it makes a big difference. It does mean that the times when he was tested during games where Brodeur didn't face a lot of shots that he had to still stay focused.

Finally get to watch a Blackhawk's game thanks to Yahoo Game night. I'm thinking about giving in and getting NHL center ice, I feel like I'm missing out on some exciting games. Hawks are so fun to watch this season. They made Boston look like an AHL team for awhile, the Bruins couldn't even touch the puck.
It's a good time for me to be a Hockey fan Sabres and Blackhawk's both doing great so far.

polamalu is a make or break player, kunitz is not.
In the sense they both went down with injuries this year, twice, yes he does.
FranklinTard
01-08-2010, 01:54 PM
yes, i agree, they both got injured, but when troy is in the game, people watch for him, when kunitz is there (judging by his abysmal goal count this year) no one gives a ****, aside from his hitting.

ovie keeps throwing his knees around at other peoples knees. i have no problem with others stepping in to fight for the stars, but not for ovie. he consistently takes runs at people, has cheap hits at least once a night, hes a straight up dirty player (his suspension this year speaks for itself), and he should fight his own fights.
his team needs to be more objective, he never stops, even after being suspended, the only thing he will listen to is some knuckles. and id like to see how he handles himself.
no problem with people playing hard and giving their all, but when its illegal, thats where it stops being 'ovie being ovie' and turns into someone trying to hurt someone else.

My love for hockey must be waning. I've watched maybe two games this year from start to finish. I guess growing up as a child and adult with Bobby Orr, Guy Lafleur, Gilbert Perreault, Gretzky and Mario et al, have left me spoiled. After Yzerman and Brett Hull retired, I began to lose interest. Man I just don't see the caliber of player that I used to, or maybe the game is not suited to them anymore. I think someone like Crosby should be getting 175 points a season.

Hockey has changed a lot in the last decade or so. Everything is systems oriented now and it takes a lot of the skill away from the individual players. They get systems like the trap and cycling in the corners (which can be productive with the right players) drilled into them in juniors. Result is very few players like Yzerman or Lemieux anymore.

interesting moves by toronto, i think phaneuf needed a change of scenery, the giguere was a little bit of a surprise but when i saw hiller was resigned it makes sense.
how much money does toronto have for this summer though, added a good bit with those two players alone.

there defense alone takes up about half the payroll now. Bad trade. Phaneuf is a good d man with lots of upside but he is only one player. Don't mind that the leafs dropped Stajan, Blake or Mayers but Giguere and Sjostrom won't fix any problems. Trading Hagman was a big mistake by the Leafs. he's a solid two-way player.
Any trade news in Pittsburgh, Franklin?

nah shero has said before if he does anything it will be just a swap of role players more than likely, i think we have like 1.5 million under the cap, so we can't afford anyone.
we have at least one extra blue liner that could go though with skoula getting the healthy scratch every night. also wouldn't mind getting kunitz off the books (if he ever returns) for a solid winger that can shoot.
curious about the leafs though, they lost all of their scoring, very glad the pens won't see jason blake anymore though, always scored against us. hopefully they bring up a local pittsburgh native (and a member of my high school i might add) christian hansen (yes that hansen, son of one of the hansen brothers in slap shot) because well, that would be cool to see, i always root for the locals.

I know the playoffs is another season but I still like to throw those stats out there for the hell of it. East Conference
Washington vs. Montreal - Caps in 5
New Jersey vs. Philadelphia - Devils in 6
Buffalo vs. Boston - Sabres in 7
Pittsburgh vs. Ottawa - Pens in 5
West Conference
San Jose vs. Colorado - Avs in 7 OT finale
Chicago vs. Nashville - Hawks in 6
Vancouver vs. Los Angeles - Canucks in 6
Phoenix vs. Detroit - Wings in 6
Toughest series to predict was Bruins/Sabres could go either way.

The day they start kicking out fans who try to intimidate the opposing team without any type of physical threat is the day I stop watching sports. It's always been part of most of the team sports as far as I can remember. Baseball especially is famous for it.
Those two guys are famous around here now and the media seems to be enjoying promoting them. Their just a couple of BC tech students trying to do something different so it's a fad that will eventually get tiring of course.
And nice 'no call' on the high sticking again tonight. It's getting frustrating seeing these blatant penalties not being called by the two blind mice out there.
And L.A. has scored 4 of their 5 goals on the PP so anytime a team allows this, you're not going to be going far. Their PK unit had better sharpen up. And that too many men call had 7 players on the ice in overtime so we can blame the coaching for that one.

Have you ever played hockey before Frank? There are always times where fans cross the line. There is a lot of heckling and prejudice that's thrown their way. When you have someone doing a handstand against the penalty box glass to taunt them, that to me is going too far.

Man Ottawa sure blew that one being up by 3 at the half point mark. Then again, you can't expect to win when being outshot 18-4 in the 3rd. I sooooo wanted to see the Pens ousted. Hopefully the Sabres or Bruins will take care of them.
And Nashville should be pissed at themselves for letting that one slip by. Hossa gets the major near the end of the game so it should have been all over. But Chicago miraculously gets the puck back after a lousy pass attempt, pull their goalie and score while it's 5 on 5. They also had that PP extend in OT but of course the rest is history and now they're down 3-2 instead of being up 3-2.
I'm hoping the Canucks can finish off LA tonight but I think LA had alot to talk about since last game and they're going to be very ready so it should be a good one.

Devils coach Lemaire retires
NEWARK, N.J. -- The energy is gone, so Jacques Lemaire is walking away from coaching.
Just four days after the New Jersey Devils were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round for the third straight year, the 64-year-old Lemaire made the surprising announcement Monday that he is retiring as a coach.

Jacques Lemaire, who retired Monday, led the Devils to the Stanley Cup in 1995.
"It's tough to leave what you like, but it's a decision that I made," he said.
Lemaire said he thought about retiring several times this season and that the loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in five games had nothing to do with his decision. He relayed it to Devils president Lou Lamoriello over the past 24 hours.
"It's not the team, it is not the result or the lack of result we had in the playoffs," a glassy-eyed Lemaire said. "It's not that at all. It's the end of the line. I'll be 65. It's just time."
Lemaire had a hard time telling the coaching staff he was leaving and he was only able to get a few words out to the players before he could not go on. Lamoriello had to step in and relay the news.
"It was a difficult thing because Jacques is a players' coach," Lamoriello said.
Lamoriello said Lemaire, who made the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984 for his playing career, will stay with the Devils in a role yet to be determined.
"I didn't see that coming," goaltender Martin Brodeur said. "I think Jacques has a lot of passion for the game and he showed it all throughout the year and the playoffs, and I think that drive was there. It seems to be there, but he knows it better than anybody and you have to accept what he wants to do."
Jacques Lemaire Career Highlights
Devils coach Jacques Lemaire retired on Monday after a 16-year career with four teams. Here's a look at his coaching career:
• 16 seasons with Canadiens, Devils (twice) and Wild.
• Record of 588-441-184 (.561) in 1,213 NHL games with only three losing seasons.
• Won Stanley Cup with Devils in 1995.
• Two-time winner of Jack Adams Award as NHL's coach of the year, 1993-94 (Devils) and 2002-03 (Wild).
• Went 293-255-108 (.529) as first coach of the expansion Wild.
Lamoriello said he has not thought about a replacement.
Among those considered potential replacements are John MacLean, the coach of the Devils' top farm team (Lowell of the AHL), and Hall of Fame defenseman Scott Stevens, who was an assistant this season.
Making the decision so surprising was Lamoriello having said Friday he expected Lemaire back next season. However, the Devils executive admitted he was not totally caught off guard by the decision.
Lemaire had told him after accepting the job in July that he would re-evaluate how he felt after the first season.
"It's a game I have been in a long time," said Lemaire, who has been a part of 11 Stanley Cup champions as either a player, coach or executive. "I really have a thing for it and I still do. There is no doubt if I had the energy I would keep going because I love it.'
Whoever gets the job will be the Devils' third head coach in as many years.
"It's tough," left wing Zach Parise said. "It seems like the same story every summer. I don't know what to think about it."
Lemaire had replaced Brent Sutter, who resigned after two seasons last year to be closer to his home in western Canada. Sutter eventually became coach of the Calgary Flames.
Lamoriello then turned to Lemaire, who led the Devils to their first Stanley Cup in 1995. He had stepped down as Minnesota Wild coach after eight seasons last season, but his former boss persuaded him to come to New Jersey for a second stint as coach.
Lemaire coached 16 seasons in the NHL with Montreal, New Jersey and Minnesota, posting a 588-441 won-lost record. His teams also played 124 ties and lost 60 games in overtime or shootouts.
He won the Jack Adams Award as the league's top coach in 1994 and 2003. This past winter, he was an assistant on Canada's gold medal-winning team at the Vancouver Olympics.
The Devils won the Atlantic Division this past season with a 48-27-7 record, making them the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. However, they were clearly outplayed in the playoffs by the seventh-seeded Flyers, who beat them nine of 11 games this season.
"The season went really well, I could have been a lot more tired," Lemaire quipped.
"It went really well," he added. "I know it's disappointing. You look at the team and always feel: 'Hey, we got a chance here. We got a chance to do something.' Especially I felt I was getting toward retirement one day, it would have been nice to do something else in the playoffs. That's my only disappointment."

If the Avs and Redwings go out first round the world will probably end. Those two are normally in it for awhile, well at least the Redwings for now.

I seriously doubt the Red Wings will be out in the first round. But then again, anything is possible. Plus, I'd love to see them ousted.
Go Sabres and Canadiens.

He wasn't the only reason Caps lost, but definitely the main reason. 53 shots he saved. That is unreal. But yeah, poor defense and a few easy ones that Varly let slip in did not help at all. I also think Halak is in their heads, they are so hesitant now in their shooting. (Even though they got 54 shots up) It seems like they are looking for the perfect play rather than just shooting it when they have a shot.

Penguins Recall Seven Players
Wednesday, 04.28.2010 / 8:45 AM / News
Pittsburgh Penguins
The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled seven players from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, it was announced by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
Forwards Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson, Mark Letestu, Eric Tangradi and Tim Wallace, defenseman Steve Wagner and goaltender John Curry will join the Penguins for the 2010 postseason. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s season ended when the Baby Penguins were eliminated by Albany in the first round of the AHL playoffs on April 19.
The seven players join forward Chris Conner, defensemen Deryk Engelland and Ben Lovejoy and goaltender Brad Thiessen, who were previously recalled from WBS by Pittsburgh for the postseason.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Todd Reirden and assistant coach John Hynes will also join the Penguins for the playoffs.
There might be a possibility that we could see Tangradi in at some point. He could do some damage with Poni and Malkin.

yea i knew they were waiting for them to be eliminated before tangradi came up. connor is fast and runs the cycle like a champ though, so i can't complain. just as long as stinko never sees the ice.
doubt any of those pens see any time other than tangradi and connor, maybe jeffrey if we get an injury to a center, but i doubt it.

The curse lives on.
Throwing my homerism aside, that has to be one of the biggest choke jobs in NHL history right? Or even sports for that matter.
A 1 seed up on an 8 seed 3-1 and you lose the series 4-3??
Uggh. So frustrating. Semin and Green were no shows.

Its fifth highest in points difference so I guess it would be the 5th biggest upset of all time. Halak what can you say? He stole that series.

I really wanted to see the Coyotes win the Cup to see what happened. Would Gary Bettman hand it to himself?

Halak played well, but the Pens needed to play a little more physically. No one is getting in the creases anymore -- everyone is trying to play a fancy game. It isn't working. The Habs aren't even a good team, they just sit back in the trap.
It's stupid.

it was a road victory, montreal just played the incredibly boring trap, hopefully they do not advance, for the good of the entire sport. sure it may get victories, but its the most boring hockey to watch. why do you think the nhl started to fold when the devils started winning cups?
hell even better question, do you even remember the devils winning any cups? of course not, nobody watched or remembered the boring trap.

haha i was just messing around. i just hate the trap so much, i don't know why it makes hockey so boring to me, but probably because of the lack of actual scoring chances and the fact that its not even dump and chase, the trap just dumps and falls back. its gamesmanship (which i love in all facets) but i can still hate it.

I'll admit that Luongo had played about 4 very good games in a row. But that last game he was just letting out too many rebounds. And that turd Dustin Byfuglien planting himself in front of the net on powerplays like that is very annoying. Nobody seems to be able to move him.
Aside from those two things, the Canucks have just been playing too passive. Since that 2-0 lead early in the second game and the relative easy way they won in the first one, they must have thought to themselves that they didn't need to give 100 percent. That it was destiny. It's just brutal watching them run around in their own end at times and what appears to look like no hussle to get to the corners. And it's not because Chigago has speed either. Their legs just ain't moving. They had better turn things around fast tonight or they'll be in a pretty big hole that will be almost impossible to escape.

Oh and I forgot to say. Why doesn't the Pens just dump and chase to get by that trap instead of always trying to carry it in. They have bigger players than the Habs and should just pound the hell out of them after they dump as well as gain puck posession where they can do their stuff.
I haven't been able to watch any of their games but it's just what I heard from friends at work who have.

well its not that simple escape, the habs are running a type of box trap and their rotations are excellent. but i would like to see more dump and chase, i fee like if bill guerin was out there, we would have a veteran presence realizing what to do with it.
