The Electronic Arts hit video game "Dead Space" is on course to become a sci-fi/horror film, with Eagle Eye helmer D.J. Caruso attached to direct, reports Variety.

EA will produce the film with Temple Hill partners Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey.

The producers, EA and Caruso have been listening to takes from prospective screenwriters, and once they set a writer and EA signs off on a creative direction, they will auction the property to studios. That will likely happen in early September.

Dead Space is set in the 26th century in deep space, where an engineer who responds to a distress signal from a mining ship (the USG Ishimura) finds the vessel infested with monstrous creatures called Necromorphs. The creatures are human corpses, reanimated by an alien virus.

EA launched the game in 2008 and is working on the second and third installments.

Dead Space is one of the scariest and best survival horror games I've ever played and I think if actually done right you could have one extremely terrifying and effective film. Where there's little to no characters in the game I definitely think they will be adding extra people, sadly. If it was done exactly like the game it would be so dreary and even depressing and in that setting would be perfect. I could see it being like the last 15 minutes of Alien where Ripley is just by herself on the ship. Should be a lot of action but I don't want to get my hopes up too high. It'd be awesome if the movie ended like the game too. Also...it better be rated R.

Here are some game trailers, one of my favorites from any game:

I think you nailed it. It could work very well as a film if they follow the same bleak, lonely atmosphere of the game.

If that one aspect is included I think that is one major step that would make this possibly the first successful (at least in gamer's eyes) video game adaptation.
