View Full Version : Disrespect for books
dont you hate it when people disrespect your books.
I just got my copy of fight club back (after almost a year) and the front cover was ripped off and then someone rested a coffee on the first page, then there were numbers and notes all through it, on the pages, of where the person was to lazy to find a note pad. all the way through there were food stains.
i would have rathered if they had kept it, i would buy a new one.
this ever happened to you?

I'm veeery picky with my books' condition. When I read one, I'm careful not to crease the outside cover by never opening it too much. Although, I guess that's only if it's a new book and maybe part of a set...it has to look pretty.
I can't think of many times I've lent out a book thoguh. I guess once a long time ago I lent a neighbor one of my "Goosebumps" and I got it back in bad condition, I was pretty ticked off.
But I guess it could have been worse...

I've never lent any of my books once my friend accidently spilled juice all over my copy of Where the Wild Things Are when I was little.
Bookmarks are my savior...I feel horrible when I crease pages...it looks terrible, IMO

Yeah, my friend took my copy of ROTS: the junior novel editioin(in paperback), and bent it all the way back, which led to a page with a pic of Darth Vader falling out. Then i let my other friend borrow Harry Potter POA a few months earlier... now I'm afraid the pages are gonna fall outta that, too.

I lent a few of my comic books out ONCE - that night the upstairs apartment where those guys lived burned up. Oily rags started the fire - the guy replaced my issues. Thank goodness they were fairly recent and not expensive collectibles - it was a favorite story of mine though.

no one disrespectsmy books and survives to tell the tale....I hade to buy a copy of a hardback book once that was no longer available HB to complete a set....so that cost more money so they know that book is OFF LIMITS

I thought this thread was more about the way society doesn't read that many books anymore. :funny:
As long as I can read the words I'm fine with my books.
My dog ate my LOTR book.

I don't see why people get so upset over creased books. As long as you can read them... well that's all that matters isn't it? Sure, you want them to look pretty but a few creases never hurt anyone. I understand if there are so many stains that they cover the words or something but really... what's the fuss?

That only counts for Hard cover books.... Paperbacks don't really go up in value much.

My Amazing Spider-man #1 comic book (original price about 12 cents) is worth $18,000 at least to another collector.

I lent my friend some Goosebump books when i was young.I was totally fine with lending people books since it hought RL Stine was a genius(I was young),and wanted my friends to appreciate him too.Not until one day when this friend of mine returned book 16 to be with half the pages gone.Well, they were found in his bag later on but that's beside the point.
Never lent anybody any books after that. Not even a flip through the pages.Yeah,im paranoid.Sue me.

P.S. onnn topic: if anyone ever breaks my HARDCOVERS their pretty much ruined. because, you just don't do that.
however, i personally LOVE the look of a worn paperback. it just makes it appear more appreciated. my opinion :)

Someone once told me - Only lend those books which you never care to get back. It's sage advice. When I loan someone a book - I don't expect to get it back, and I don't expect to get it back in the same condition in which I gave it. So really - it's a gift from me to them so that they can enjoy the book and not have me flip out on them later. Yes, it means I have to re-purchase some books, but I've also got friends who get me bookstore giftcards because "hey you lent me that really great book and I never returned it to you because I lent it to someone else"
I think it's cool when a book travels from person to person to person. You can't expect it not to get a little beat up along the way.

I usually read a book and give it to my friends and they do the same. Our books circulate around so everyone could read and enjoy them. I dont want to read the same book twice, there are other new interesting books instead for me to read.

I wouldn't ever dog-ear the pages in a book I was reading. It's internationally known to be disrespectful to the author and authors deserve alot of respect.

Yeah, I 'dog-ear' my books all the time. It's not like it matters, I'm the only one who reads them. I don't lend out books or DVDs or games anymore.

i dog-ear most of my pages . . . but not my hardcovers :P
then again, i buy a lot of my paperbacks recyceled -- like at old bookstores, or one of those trade in stores --- so the cover's pretty beaten up when i get it. but i don't mind . . :)

I just throw everything around the house so I wouldn't want to know what has happened to my books...I am kinda trying to get back in the habit of reading and I have been looking for the 1st and 2nd Harry Potter books around my house (because I'm reading the series again for the 1st time in 2 years) and I found the 2nd scrunched up behind the computer and mum found the 1st in my room. The pages are all crinkly and the 1st ones pages are ripped. It's still legible though :)

Man, I'm downright anal about how I keep my books. I make an effort when reading them not to even crease the spine, and I NEVER dogear the pages.

I have a problem with books. I have so many that there are just piles. I swear, half of my room is a book shelf, a full book shelf mind you, and they all have to be in alphabetical order. I'm so OCD about my books that it's pretty much scary.

Whenever I buy a book, first thing I do is sign my name on the first page, usually also the place of the world where im at, and the year. I will lend books to friends and other people, and i expect to receive them back, but in many cases they are never returned. I make a point of returning books that I have been lent.
I don't expect the book to be returned in the same condition. But if they returned it in very bad condition (it has never happened), i'd get pissed.
If i like a book and expect to read it again, or use it as reference further on, i will not lend it. I will let someone read it in my house, though.
