The Nirvana thread got me thinking.
Here's a top 10 list of Top Artists of the 1990's. The web site took into account the following when making the list: musical influence, impact, talent,
creativity, musical depth & expression, and popularity in the world of Rock in the '90s.
Here's their top 10
1. Nirvana
2. Pearl Jam
3. Radiohead
4. Soundgarden
5. Red Hot Chili Peppers
6. Tool
7. Alice In Chains
8. Smashing Pumpkins
9. R.E.M.
10. Phish
Here's the site: http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_artists90.html
It's actually a top 100 list, but I thought I'd just post the author's top 10 to get the discussion going.
Remember, musical influence, impact, talent,
creativity, musical depth & expression, and popularity in the world of Rock in the '90s.
Discuss.

damn right he is... and he's talented as hell too... he plays nearly every instrument on "rockin' the suburbs". i guess he's got a new album coming out soon... at least he's got a new song that they play a lot on SIRIUS college rock station...

Yeah, I've been listening to "Brick" a lot over the past few days. The song is apparently a true story, he really did take his (then) girlfriend to get an abortion.

a lot of his songs are based on true stories... like on "rockin the suburbs" there's a song called 'not the same' about a guy who drops acid and climbs a tree, and during his trip realizes that he needs to be a born again christian... that's a true story too apparently, according to his live album...
and most people don't even realize "brick" is about an abortion, apparently people approach him all the time and say things like "brick is such a good love song! it's so romantic!" those fools...

I saw Ben Folds Five at a Lollapolooza in KC on the second stage.
It was pretty amazing. There were a total of about 25 people watching when they first took the stage and close to 400 by the time they left.
What a GREAT band!!!!
In no particular order:
Dream Theater (with the breakthrough album Images And Words in 1992 and Awake in 1994. What an amazing album)
Symphony X (replacing Rod Tyler with Russell Allen on lead vocals was the best thing the band has ever done)
Pearl Jam
Alice In Chains
Soundgarden
Collective Soul
Pantera
Metallica (I got into them around this time)
Radiohead
Faith No More
Zombie pretty cool you got to add Jason Becker and Buckethead to your lists. Good stuff. Sadly I haven't got Becker's Perpetual Burn yet :(
What can you recommend from Buckethead anyway? I heard so much about him.
FVD.

Honestly, I don't know what to suggest to you as far as Buckethead goes. I've only heard a few of his CD's but I don't own any. I just heard enough to know that he is one of the most talented artists in the world today. :) Also, Becker's "Perpetual Burn" is really good.

Man, all of you guys forgot Tool. They are probably the most complex band of the 90's. If you haven't heard anything of them you need to. I reccomend listening these songs: Sober, Stinkfist, H., and 46 & 2.

Exactly the same way that I feel about Tool. "Stinkfist" was their only song that appealed to me.
