This is the direct link to Quicktime version of "Kung Fu Hustle". (http://movies.apple.com/movies/jp/movies/sony/kungfuhustle/kungfuhustle_large.mov)

"Shaolin Soccer" was an extremely funny movie. This movie will hopefully follow in it's footsteps.:D

if you like airplane, naked gun, ace ventura, and looney tunes you'll dig this movie.
could be the funniest movie i've seen, amazing directing and totally original. nothing like it.
and yes there are some very violent scenes i think just right at the beginning...and yet at the same time feels very much like a family oriented film with wholesome goodness themes injected throughout the movie. so strange and complex.
from this film one can see that stephen chow is a big fan of looney tunes.

when you see this movie you'll see why. the crazy foot chase ending with the landlady splattered on the billboard is vintage road runner-wile e coyote. the use of firecrakers/dynamite exploding on that guy's head, the flower pot landing on the landlady's husband after she beat him up to, bucktooth jane cartoonish behavior, the fairy tailor, the pinball sounds during last fight, and the great use of old fashion music like the ones in cartoons i remember long ago...need i go on?

I saw this movie few months ago, back in Asia. If you liked Shaolin Soccer then you'll definately like this, to my taste its better then Shaolin Soccer.
Its like a comic super-kung-fu movie, with great special effects. Movie is indeed hilarious, and there are a couple of scenes that are slightly brutal, but its brutal in a comic sense, not to be taken seriously.
Shaolin Soccer was great cause they were showing extreme powers in use with soccer, now just think if the the ball was the enemy...quite hilarious.

Very interested in this one - I love genre bending movies (like comedy martial arts flicks).

And for the person who is interested in Ong Bak - go see it - it is awesome and Tony Jaa is gonna be a freaking superstar. He did this demonstration at the preview screening I saw and it was ridiculous!

my dad bought the DVD at chinatown for about 7 dollars CAD. it was an illegal copy with the summary on the back which didnt make a lot of sense and had spelling errors and grammar. it still has a dvd menu, and the movie quality doesn't seem like a DVD, its not one of those movies where they take a camera into the theatre, the quality wasn't really that good including the sound and picture. i saw the first 12 minutes of it because i was busy, it was really interesting and hilarious.

Ah, well I hope that if Tony Jaa actually get famous in US, he doesn't suffer Asian actor syndrome. You can ask Jet Li and Chow Yun Fat that question, feel really bad for them.

If you ask me, I think the humour in this movie is one you either love or hate. I hated it. There were only a couple scenes that were funny to me, the rest were just... bleh. My idea of the penultimate Kung Fu spoof would have to be Kung Pow!

It's a shame House of Flying Daggers didn't do better in wide release. That would have went a long way for foreign films in the US.

KayTang999
02-14-2005, 07:21 PM
There are some issues with HOFD, especially with the plot. Sure it got great review but it seems like not many people like the movie and you just have Hero earlier in the summer. As far as I know, there were a lot of promotion for HOFD compared to Hero or CTHD.

Mat
02-14-2005, 07:32 PM
I didn't see nearly as much promotion with Flying Daggers as I saw with Hero and Crouching Tiger. I think the biggest problem with Flying Daggers doing well in the US is that it really didn't have a star well-known in the west. Crouching Tiger had Chow Yun Fat, Hero had Jet Li. The biggest star Flying Dagger had (for US viewers at least) is Ziyi Zhang, and she isn't nearly as well known as the other two.

KayTang999
02-14-2005, 09:58 PM
True about the stars but CTHD was like a fresh new air to Hollywood because there hasn't been an wuxia movie to hit US. Hero has Quintin's written all over it! (Even though it is not his). I think the company assume that Yimou and Ziyi would be able to carry the movie. I was wondering if Infernal Affairs has been released in US in theater, would it be any different since Andy Lau was in that movie. As for Kaneshiro, well I would be surprise if anyone actually recognized him from Onimusha.

not exactly, there should be an all region ntsc dvd release this week around 2/25. will come back with a link once there is subtantial information on this dvd. actually there are couple of all region kung fu hustle dvds on ebay right now that supposedly plays in canada & us...but can't confirm 100% if the seller is legit.

As much as I like Stepen Chow, no. No one should ever touch Dragonball Z if their only attempt is to make a live-action version out of it even if the casts are Asians.

Kung Fu Hustle Review:

I loved Shaolin Soccer, one of my all time favorite movies, and probably my all time favorite comedy. I have seen other Stephen Chow movies since then, and they were not as good, some were quite bad actually, but some how I still love him. I was eagerly anticipating Kung Fu Hustle long before there were any pics or trailers, I have been dying to see this, but was also very hesitant.

This movie is a lot like Shaolin Soccer in many ways (such as the cast) but also a lot like Chow's earlier, and even though it doesnt seem possible, wierder movies. It is very brutal, there is some blood, lots of implied violence and quite a bit that is actually shown; not a kids movie. However, most of it is down in a cartoon way. You hear a lot about this being like a cartoon, well its all true, and it is brilliant. I didnt laugh as much as I had hoped, but still laughed alot, the fighting was great, I mean really good stuff, but Yuen Woo Ping was invovled so thats no surprise. The cameos, and inside jokes a great, and I too laughed like crazy at the knife throwing part! I love how Chow has crazy CG, and live action combined, and I also love how he always builds up to amazing climaxes, and manages to not disapoint. This is a very strange movie, but not as much as some of his other stuff, and I didnt find it as funny as Shaolin Soccer, though I might have liked it as much. This is top notch Stephen Chow, just ask the theater workers in China, great original stuff!!! But, just because you liked Shaolin Soccer doesnt mean you will like this, eventhough thats what many people are saying.

grade= A+

good in-depth review by roscranz but left out one thing and others have not brought this up is that KFH has incredible music that blends so well from the 1st minute to the last scene. especially the ones involving the the mute girl WOW, very moving. seem liked the film was done by an asian john williams or hans zimmer.
at the moment ebay has quite a abit of all region 0 dvds available.

I was in Chinatown and I found the movie on DVD. It's a rip of the R3, I think, and since I am not near my set-top I can't tell if it's R0 or not -- the DVD player on this computer didn't prompt me to change the region, though. The quality was perfect and the subtitles were fantastic.

Oh, yeah, and the movie was pretty awesome too. :D

I think its because of all the "violence" even though no one really gets killed or anything. There some scenes [not really a spoiler] like kids peeing on one another, stuff like that that the mpaa likes to get all huffy puffy I suppose [saw this in Aspen].

I saw this at a surprise screening at the Aspn Film Fest. Great film, very fun. Predictable plot and some of the sfx are overdone but you like shaolin soccer this is a good romp. Very silly at times and the story really doesn't make much sense but I don't think many people cared. It was standing room only in the theater (a fair sized one at that) and it got a standing ovation. :omg:

hmmmm, the post before you say you have seen a lot of his films, but then you say this. his movies always have some pretty damn violent stuff in them, either you lied when you said you are a big fan and you have seen a lot of his films, or you need to watch basically all of them again.
