The Dark Tower series has always been my favorite. SK proves in that one that hes more than just a "horror" writer.

But as for his horror novels, Salem's Lot was really good.

I could never get into the SK books, but the his films are great. I like reading James Herbert books. The Rats is one of my faves

I've read all of his books, and the best are the Dark Tower series.

For the best of his standalone books, would have to be It.

Or, The Talisman. But he cowrote that with Peter Strauss, so I don't consider it to be "his" best book. Even though it's my all time favorite book.

SK is ok, but never really does much for me. I'm not sure why. Sometimes I feel his stuff just drags on too long..... But, I do read him.

I prefer Dean Koontz. I love his work, although I do know his style doesn't work for everyone.

Hmm... I've only read one book of his and two short stories. I liked them, but I havn't gotten around to any more of his work.

The book I read wasn't really horror. It was called In the Eye of the Dragon, or something like that.

I've read the first two short stories in Four Past Midnight. Secret Window, Secret Garden is the second short story. The film was, well, different than the short story, but I don't want to give it away if someone hasn't read it. ;)

Stephen King is by far my all time fav. i haven't read a lot of his newer works, but pre-1990 i believe i've read them all. The Stand has to be one of my top five novels that i've read of all time. My wife loved the short story "Survivor Type" from Skeleton Crew, Needful things and Deperation.
If you've never really jumped into King, I would suggest trying some of the short story collections first. You really can't go wrong with Different Seasons. I was deployed to Iraq back in '03 and that was one book that i made sure i had in my bag. Try reading the Running Man. If you've seen the Ahnuld movie trust me you'll be pleasantly suprised at the short story. It in NO WAY relates to the movie and is FAR better.
A lot of people complain that King is long winded and drags a bit with descriptions of places and events. I for one say that is exactly why i love his writing so much. He basically paints the scene for you to the point where you can actually see it as he intends. That is a rare thing in this day and age of cookie-cutter movies and on demand entertainment.

The Dark Tower series has been a decent read for me so far. You can see Mr. King's writing evolve but on some level de-evolve as the series goes on. Personally, the series peaked around book 4 for me.

Anyhow before reading that series the two parts I suggest reading are "The Talisman" and "The Black House". I found these both to be very good reads. I also enjoyed "The Stand" and I recall liking "Firestarter".

I think the Dark tower series was really good. And I disagree when you say it peaked at book four. I agree that 5 and 6 weren't as strong but I think that book 7 was great.

As for the other books I would suggest reading "The Black House" alongside the dark tower series (best spot would be after book 4). Also a great read is "hearts in Atlantis". I think it does a wonderful job portraying life at during the latter half of the 20th century.

I did mention so far, the only book I have not gotten to yet was book 7. But you've provided me some hope now in it. A good friend of mine who praised the series continually kept telling me how he felt that King could've done so much more with the ending; it partially disheartened me from reading---that and I have to many books to read this semester for my literature courses.

I was going to read "Hearts of Atlantis" but after skimming info about it from the back of the book and on the net; it did not strike me as a type of book that I'd enjoy.
