Director Elia Kazan died in his home on Sunday aged 94!
Kazan was nominated for a Best Director Oscar five times, winning
twice for Gentleman's Agreement (1947) and On the Waterfront (1954).
Kazan also directed A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), East of Eden
(1955) and America, America (1963).
The director will perhaps best be remembered for his actions during
America's infamous McCarthy era. A member of the Communist Party in
the 30s, Kazan testified that eight of his colleagues had also been
members, damning them to career oblivion.
In 1999 the Academy decided to award Kazan an honorary Oscar for a
lifetime's achievement, a decision which spilt Hollywood. Remember
the controversy that year when some stars stood and applauded while
others refused to even clap.
