Just wondering what you think the dumbest sport ever invented was?
For me, I'd say golf. Sure, lots of people play, but for me its boring (and yes, I have played before).

Baseball - Its cricket dumbed down as far as possible. You can only hit the ball in one direction, you can only hit it once, all the field posistions are set, you have to run everytime you hit the ball etc etc.

NASCAR. I have nothing against car racing in general being a sport, but WTF.. in NASCAR they just drive around in ****ing circles for hours on end. They should stick a chicane or two and a hairpin on the track... That'd make it interesting.
Lawnbowling... 'nuff said
Hell bowling sucks pretty hard too. (i'm just saying that because I am the worlds worst bowler.)
And WTF is up with rodeos. Are these people insane or what. Do you come home one day and decide that you want to ride a bull that weighs over a ton and can kill you in an instant?
Personally I can't stand to watch baseball. So tedious. So boring. So many fat outta shape dudes running after balls, and do nothings that get paid the equivelent of some small country's GDP.
And I just can't understand Cricket. Therefore it sucks. Funny thing is in the 9th grade I made the cricket team without understanding the game.

I think they consider anything that takes physical effort a sport. Maybe by those standards we can have professional construction worker circuits.

Because it's boring as hell. There's not a whole lot of strategy to it. I understand why europeans don't like american football. I spent countless hours trying to teach people the rules of it while I lived over there and nobody could seem to get it. Soccer is fun to play but lame as hell to watch. Trust me, I have been to many a soccer game (including Russia's championships which they seem to have many), and they were only marginal. Point being, soccer takes little brain power to play.

I don't much care for soccer myself, but you can't say it takes no brainpower to play it. I probably don't like it because I was never any good at it, because it's so bloody hard. But to watch, I just find it boring. Same with golf and tennis. But I love cricket. Figure that one out. Cricket has got to be the slowest bloody game in the world, but I guess cos I grew up with it, I'm kinda numb to how boring other people must find it.
For a spectator sport tho', you can't go past Australian Rules Football.

I cant believe no one has said bullfighting yet. Seriously, whats so exciting about seeing a guy dressed up as a clown prance around while stabbing another animal??
tedward
10-12-2003, 11:05 AM
Bullfighting is dumb because its never fair. If the bull gets the Matedor guy a bunch of people rush in and kill the bull. They should play fair - if they allow the matedor guy to mock the bull and slowly kill it by repeatedly stabbing spears in to it - the very least they could do is not jump in on the rare occasion the bull hits the matedor and starts to tear him to shreads.
So (in short) technically bullfighting is not a sport cos its not competative - they should make it competative.
And re the earlier debate - startegy doesnt play too much when it comes to soccer- its just kicking a ball about. Really - what strategic decissions does the captain have to make? The defence just have to work the offside rule - and thats it. At the highest level the Manager decides on formations and match ups but thats all. Cricket and American football are two sports where strategy is very important. But unlike those two soccer is a fast paced sport.

You really mean this? Have you ever played soccer in your life?? Or even watched some games?
Try to "just kick" ball like those guys are doing it over 90 (!!!!) minutes! You have no idea how fit you got te be to play soccer and how talented you got to be to handle the ball like they do.
The whole team works as a unity, not just skipping offence and defence during commercial brakes.
And you dont get it, dont you? Soccer is no football, so you have 11 guys who make decissions except one guy who throws the ball.
There is a reason why soccer is the biggest sport on our planet.

1) Yes I have played soccer actually (for years) and many many many other team sports too. Ive watched quite a few games - i have to say I find it quite dull a lot of the time.
2) I never mentioned the fitness levels of soccer players but since you brought it up they are harldy the fittest of athletes - they will be found wanting when (for example) compared to Aussie rules players - who all have to be able to run a hundred meters in 10 seconds and run over the size of a cricket pitch rather than a small football pitch. I believe there was a recent study where the fitness levels of olympic socccer layers was only comparable to high school gymnists.
3) yeh zidanne and all that are tallented, no denying that.
4) The whole team works as a unity? hmm well there all on the pitch at the same time.
5) 11 guys make decissions - i believe everyone in american football has to make decissions too - its only in baseball where all the decissions are already pre-made.
6) Soccer is the most popular sport on the planet but in most countries its not the most popular sport - if you get my drift. i.e in france (wc winners '98) Rugby is more popular.
Oh and one last thing have you ever played soccer?? Or american football?

p.s you should get more involved in the general football thread (premiership football thread) its where all the main football talk is.

Yeah thats true.
In Costa Rica, we have a different kind of bullfighting. Instead of having one guy against the bull, you get 40 morons and put them into a bullring. Then a bull is released and the bull chases the guys around the ring, until the bull either gets bored or a certain amount of time goes by. Then the bull is taken back into its corral and the next one is released, and so on and so on. It sounds pretty stupid when described like that, but when you see it its real fun because most of the guys are drunk.
They also do another one where they set up two goal posts on either side of the ring and they have two teams, and the teams have to get themselves chased through the opposing teams goal posts. Stupid as helll, but fun to watch....

A very famous coach once said, "If you really want to find the truth about people, find out what they think is difficult to do."
Most of the people here are flaming against sports that they probably find difficult or it is something they are not interested in therefore it is boring.
Just because you/I don't find something interesting doesn't mean that it is not a good/challenging thing for someone else--and just because someone else likes something we don't doesn't make them wrong/stoopid

I think the stupidest "sport" is bowling (lawn or otherwise).
With most other sports I can look at it and think it's dumb but still realize that those that participate in it may be considered "athletes" - people at the peak of physical skill. So while I don't consider things like cheerleading and curling real sports, I acknowledge that the people that play them are athletes.

Coming from the islands...and I am excluding the USVI, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and some others from this, cricket dominates our ttention, even though the West Indies cricket team has been pissing me off as of late
While cricket can be taxing to watch, it isnt that bad a sport. Now I have tried and tried and tried to watch golf...but frankly, I am getting nowhere with it. I always change the channel after two minutes. Even ice skating, which I think is retarded, demands more of my attention than golf. lol
Football is awesome! I love playing it, but watching MLS is boring as hell. Watching Manchester United even though Becks left :( Is a thrill for me, and of course, when they were in top form, the Dutch national team. Patrick Kluivert is all I can say :D Crisp passing, beautiful footwork. What else is there to say? Rugby is also much fun, and tedward you're right, rugby is more popular in France than football, but that didnt stop 'em from having an awesome celebration for the WC '98 win ;)
As to American football, I love my Minnesota Vikings, and I even like tossing around the ball with my friends here, so I cant say I hate it. Though I figure if I throw Randy Moss into a rugby match and tell him play, he will cry for his mom and beg for padding. lol
Cheers!

Stupidest real sport is Baseball. I have no idea why it is so popular, but watching the game is like watching paint dry. I can watch 5 minutes and I am bored to tears, and they get paid how much? Jeez, what for?
I like playing all real sports, but as far as the dumbest sport, baseball gets my vote.
Vote for the best sport is Hockey. Its the fastest, most exciting sport out there. I love how fights always spring up out of no where. Hockey and Rugby players are the toughest athletes out there. Hockey players will take a skate to the face or a stick to the mouth and cough up acouple teeth, and be back on the ice in 10 minutes. Soccer players get taped on the leg and are taken off on a stretcher. Jeez. HOCKEY RULES.
