Was just wondering if anyone knew a solution to fixing this problem other than sending the ps2 to sony (warranty is up). well thats it, figured it was worth a shot to ask.

No clue what you're on about man. I'd just send it back and get a new one. Why pass up the advantage anyway.

The only thing I can think of is to get a replacement laser

There are a number of cheap things you can try first.
1) Make sure the cd/dvd is clean and in good working order.
2) clear the ps2 of dust
3) make sure its sitting horizontally.
4) buy a cd lens cleaner (one of those cds that cleans the lens)
Does it not read any cds or dvds at all? Does it just say "no disk" for everything you put in?

My advise would be to just buy a proper, separate DVD player. You can get decent ones very cheaply now.
Sony won't help you at all, I know someone that had to have their PS2 replaced twice, and they ended up (foolishly IMO) paying the full amount again.

It doesnt read any cd or dvd at all, and recently it was only reading games. So i went out and bought madden2004 and now it reads no games at all . Honestly i feel like going outside and pulling a office space on it atm.

My one has also stoped playing DVD's (Why i got a stand alone one)...but the only advice i have for the games is.....either put he PS2 vertical or an extreme option (It has worked for me and a guy for a games shop) is to put the PS2 upside down and try that way...it does work.....

Hm that's weird. Was he outside his warrenty time? I had to replace mine once, and they gave me a new one, for free, because of the warrenty.
Then they gave me the updated version that's in stores and it works fine. Of course I don't use it for DVD's anymore, because a regular DVD player is much better. But it is true that using it for your DVD's and Games means you have it on a LOT... and it's not good for any system to have it on so much.

He must have been out of his warranty, I'm not sure. I just no he had to have it replaced twice and didn't think much of Sony's attitude at all.

Mine "eats" the games sometimes. If I put in a PS1 disk, (ff8 for example) it wont read the disk at all and after awhile starts making a horrible grinding noise.

Today's problems are so high tech. I remember when all it took to fix your game was blowing into the nintendo!

I think you're supposed to use a low powered vacuum cleaner to remove dust from the PS2

I still think he should just try to get a free new one. If you have a warrenty and it's still liable, on ANY product, always use it. Better to get a new one, than to hopefully fix your current one, and take the chance of maybe having it break again, but this time when your warrenty time is up.

mine did that too, it froze up and never played dvd's, and half the time didn't play games either, made me want to shove my fist up the ps2's ass and ask it how it liked that disk read error
but no, i calmed down, and i just sent it in, after trying many many things to fix it, including getting the dust out, but noooo didn't happen, so i sent it in, and whamo, its fine

Mine has been giving me the no disk when trying DVD as well. I keep having to pop it out and back in and it eventually works. A guy I work with had his PS2 go bad and it was out of warranty. He called Sony and said something along the lines of "Come on and fix it for me. Dont make me go by an Xbox" and the tech got his super on the phone and they agreed to fix it for free if he paid for all shipping. So he got his PS2 fixed for like $15. You might want to try that.
