MSNBC reports a fire disabled a NY power plant. This has resulted in a chain reaction in which electricity from a nearby power grid is transferred over to try and make-up for the deficiency in NY. The buck keeps getting passed, resulting in massive rolling black-outs across the Northeast. We in California are quite familiar with the nuisance...

BBC News:
Power failures hit US and Canada
Many took to the streets after the power went off
Major cities in the United States and Canada have been affected by unexplained power failures.
Power blackouts were reported in the New York metropolitan area and Detroit, as well as in Toronto and Ottawa, authorities said.
The BBC's David Bamford in Washington said the whole of central New York and the city's three airports are without power and people are trapped in lifts and underground trains across the city.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told Americans watching CNN that there was "no evidence" that terrorism was to blame.
The US Department of Homeland Security says it is investigating the cause of the blackouts, which is not yet clear.
Mr Bloomberg said: "I can tell you 100 percent sure that there is no evidence as of this moment whatsoever of any terrorism."
Traffic chaos
He urged New Yorkers to make their own way homes.
"It may be well into the evening before power comes back on," he said.
The mayor added that smoke from a Consolidated Edison plant in the city was due to the plant's automatic shutdown, not to a fire, as had been reported.
Thousands of people have gone onto the streets to see what is happening and roads are gridlocked as traffic lights have failed.
Power to hospitals and prisons also reported to have failed but are working on back-up generators.
Affected cities include Detroit in Michigan as well as Cleveland and Toledo in Ohio and Toronto and Ottawa in Canada.
There were reports of outages in New Jersey and Connecticut as well.
A New York state official also told CNN the Niagara Mohawk power grid was overloaded.

I heard it started in canada.
Something simmilar happened where Im from (Perth - tiny city about a tenth the size of new york) the city and the entire metropolitan area was blacked out - becuase it rained. It had been dry for so long heaps of dust built on the power lines and when it eventually rained it shorted everything out.

The Niagra-Mohawk power grid was overloaded, afffecting much of the northeast. Here's the article from CNN.
Cities affected include New York; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Toronto and Ottawa, Canada. The power outage occurred shortly after 4 p.m.
State officials said the Niagara-Mohawk power grid was overloaded. The grid provides power for New York and stretches into Canada. The officials said the outage is likely a natural occurrence and not related to terrorism.
"It's probably a natural occurrence which [struck] the power system up there," Mayor Michael Bloomberg told CNN. "The good news is, Con Ed's facilities have shut down automatically, which they're programmed to do." Consolidated Edison is the New York area power company.
Black smoke coming from a power station on East 14th Street "was a natural thing," Bloomberg said. "No damage was done to the Con Ed facilities," he said.
A statement from the Department of Homeland Security said, "The department is working with state and local officials an the energy sector to determine the cause of the outage and what response may need to be taken."
Much of Midtown Manhattan and Wall Street was shut down. All area airports and the Long Island Railroad were also affected.
The Federal Aviation Administration grounded planes at all three New York area airports and in Cleveland because the blackout affected security screening facilities. The FAA reported planes also were grounded at the Toronto airport. The airports were operating on backup power, officials said.
Bloomberg said it was unknown how long the outage may last.
The New York City Police Department said a number of people were trapped in elevators. Thousands of people could be seen leaving buildings and walking into the streets. New York subways were reported stopped and people were trapped in the cars.
"We are going to have a situation where people are going to have to walk a long distance. They need to be careful," Bloomberg said. "Our advice is to go home, open up your windows, drink a lot of liquids."

It is a big deal because it has affected such a large and important area, but it is nothing to worry about. Sure, there are going to be a few long-lasting problems, but everyone is working hard to get the problem solved. I agree it is strange it has never ocurred before, but I'm glad it happened post-9/11 when everyone is a bit more prepared for something like this. The downside is all the speculation of people of the cause. People need to calm down and get all the facts before speculation runs wild....

I know that this wasn't a terrorist attack, but I would seriously recommend having the national guard on duty in cities like NYC where people flocking to the streets could easily be attacked with a chemical or biological weapon.

Two weeks ago the power went out city wide. It made a clockwise sweep and 80% of the traffic signals was out. It was all due to one station. Slowly the power came back on, only last an hour but it was a hot day.

Thank ****ing christ that the power is back on. That was one of the longest nights of my life. I live in New York and the power was out since 4:00 pm, and it was hot as HE11 in this house. I was hanging with my mom in the car blasting AC and playing cards to keep my sanity. And my friends were kind enough to call and amuse me, figuring (correctly) that I'd be bored senseless.
Here's to hoping that's the last black-out in a longgg time!

:nono: Always turn everything off in a power outage. When the system comes back on, have thousands or millions of appliances and electronic devices all turn back on at once can re short out the network, and you're right back where you started.

Here in NC we lost power for over a week in the middle of an ice storm. Brances were down everywhere and we a huge branch fell down in my dad's car. People were dying because of road conditions, lack of heat, or CO2 poisoning. I couldn't care less about the power outage in New York.
