Upon completion of the mini-tour and returning to Norway, the band were making the final arrangements for the recording of the first Mayhem full-length album, "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas". Then something that nobody could image happened. It was a cold April Monday, the 8th 1991. Dead had told Hellhammer that he had bought a new very sharp knife. After talking to some friends about suicide Dead felt very happy and went home, to the house on Sorumveien Road in Krakstad, Norway where the band were living. That night he proceeded to severely cutting up all the veins in his arms. However the dying process was taking longer than Dead was intended to wait and he was anxious to traverse into the death world. So he grabbed a shotgun and shot himself in the head. It is supposed that the ammunition for the shotgun was supplied by a Christian Varg Vikernes (Count Grishnack). That night Euronymous got home to the house, and knocked on the door. Having no keys and getting no answer, he proceeded to climb into the house through a half open window. Upon entering Dead's room he was shocked at what he saw. A room covered in blood; Dead lying 'dead' on the floor, with his arms cut very deep and his skull shot open by the shotgun and half his brains spilled on the floor. Euronymous left the house immediately, and rushed to the city center where he bought a photographic film, and returned to the house and started taking photographs of Dead's lifeless body. The idea was that the photos would be used for the next Mayhem album cover. Dead had left a short four word handwritten note for however happened to find his body. It read, "Excuse all the blood". Quite typical of Dead's twisted sense of humour. He was also wearing an "I LOVE Transylvania" T-shirt. Hellhammer arrived at the house next, followed by Necrobutcher.
According to the rumours, the remaining trio sat down around Dead's corpse and thought what they were going to do. Eventually they would have to report the suicide to the police. Dead had been known for his particular obsession with Death, hence his alias. Once when a friend's pet guinea pig died, Dead had asked to keep the dead animal. He carried it for a very long time in the pocked of his Jacket, even when it started decomposing. He treasured it's lifeless form, the stench of Death made him high. He proceeded to stick needles into its eyes. At an autograph session he had shown his dead Guinea pig to Cronos of Venom. Cronos was not impressed. This was at the time Dead had just joined Mayhem. They were closing in on a record deal, and were supposed to go meet a label manager. Dead decided he would go. With demo in one hand and the dead guinea pig in the other he marched into the labels office. The manager he was supposed to speak too was not there, so Dead left the demo, a note and the dead guinea pig on the label manager's desk. He telephoned the label manager the next day to ask how things were going. When the manager came to the phone he spoke in a shaky voice and told them that they were the most disgusting people he had ever met, that he had no intention of doing business with them and that if they ever bothered him again he would contact the authorities. So as Euronymous, Hellhammer and Necrobutcher sat around Dead's body, it was Euronymous who had the idea of removing part of Dead's brain. Partly out of respect, partly out of pure curiosity, and partly as a way of paying tribute to this great person who had just removed his life, the three proceeded to cook a small part of Dead's brain and eat it. When later asked about this incident Euronymous said they did it so as to acquire Dead's wisdom. Next Hellhammer and Euronymous gathered all the pieced of splintered bone and skull and proceeded to make necklaces out of these bone parts. The necklaces were distributed to all the elite black metal musicians of Scandinavia through the mail. The initial idea was to cut Dead up and distribute his body parts, again through the mail, but this quickly proved unfeasible. Euronymous had said about this incident "When it comes to Dead than he was a very Evil Goat. He hated everything that lived. The only thing which kept him from shooting himself earlier was the Black Metal/Death Metal way of lifestyle, with evil bands that worshipped death and wore black clothes, leather, bullet-belts and everything else which had to do with the real black metal lifestyle. It was so the old bands lived, like Bathory, Sodom, Hellhammer, while bands such as Therion where still sucking milk from there mothers breasts. Dead lived only for this and all the old bands died and Life Metal bands (Euronymous label for every other style of metal that was not real Black/Death) in there soft pants and baseball shoes took over, then he had nothing more to live for. The scene was empty. Another reason was that he thought that he didn't belong on this world. He thought it was cold and his blood froze to ice all the time. We support what he did and we respect his never sinning hate. After the goats death there have been actually a lot better, there have came a lot of ****ing good bands which live according to the old true identities. Norway is the motherland, bands such as Immortal, Burzum, Darkthrone, Thorns, Malfeitor, Incarnator and so on are indescribably good and incredible Evil". When asked about the legendary photos of Dead's body 'WE ARE FOR ****'S SAKE NOT A HUMANITARIAN JOKEBAND! When we say that we are into death-metal then it means we worship the dead. There is nothing that is too raw, disgusting or sick. People who cant understand this can GO TO HELL'.
It soon dawned on the band that Dead's death would have to be reported to the police. All the photographs that had been taken were given to Hellhammer to keep. He took them to his parents' home and hid them in a drawer. All except one, because that one photograph Euronymous liked a lot and decided to keep. That one photo would later be used as the cover for the bootleg recording of the famous Sarpsborg show in Norway titled "The Dawn of the Black Hearts". The rest of the photos were found and destroyed by Hellhammer's parents who were afraid of the legal consequences this could have on themselves and their son. When the three finally went to the police to report Dead's death they were hassled for a very long time, kept in custody for quite a few days, questions numerous times and considered suspects. Infact even before Dead's death, the rumours in the town about Mayhem were getting out of proportion. The authorities were warning parents and their children that Mayhem were in fact blood sucking demons, who worship Satan and held black masses quite often. Everybody avoided them when meeting them in the street. The fact that Dead would almost always go out in his complete black metal dresscode and wear corpse paint didn't help the situation, nor did the fact that they house they had rented in was considered haunted and was the furthest house from the city center, located quite deep in the woods. Mayhem had chosen it this way because it was cheap and they could practice without the neighbors complaining, as there were no neighbors.
was the year 1992 and things were starting to get rough. The inner circle was being formed. Nobody except its members knew who or what the inner circle was, but it was rumoured that Euronymous was head, and through this organization he could control the fellow members of the underground black metal scene and create chaos. The murders and the church burnings were only the beginning. 6am of June 6 1992. This was not just a random date and time, but the sixth hour of the sixth day of the sixth month. 666 the essence of Black Metal. It was then that the Fantoft Stave Church near Bergen (close to were Count Grishnack lived) was burned to the ground. Supposedly none other than the Count himself performed the arson attack. That was the beginning of the church burnings era. Many churches were burnt all over Norway, and soon the madness spread to the rest of Scandinavia and even the UK. August 1992. Bard Faust, drummer of Emperor and Thorns, and a friend were walking outside the Olympic park in Lillehammer. Bard Faust was approached by a homosexual man, who made sexual advances to him. Bard asked the man to stop annoying him, or he would kill him. The man did not stop harassing Bard, and Bard did as he had said.
Euronymous and Count Grishnack had a few disputes mainly economical (the fact that the Count had lent Euronymous a significant sum of money probably had something to do with this also) and things started getting out of hand between the two. On the night of August 10 1993, Count Grishnack and Blackthorn went to Euronymous' flat. They rang on the intercom and asked to be let up. The door opened and the Count proceeded into the flat and up into Euronymous' apartment. Count Grishnack stabbed Euronymous in the back, and after struggling for quite some time, Euronymous died having being stabbed 29 times. The Norwegian scene started dissolving. People were put in jail, and lies were being spread. The Count was put on trial and sent to jail. He claims it was self defence and that Euronymous was planning his death, and that the only way he could stay alive was by killing Euronymous before he killed him. Nobody knew the truth about anything and a war amongst the black metal fans was being declared. There were three camps. The fans of Burzum, the fans of Mayhem and the fans of both bands who took no side in the dispute but attempted to be on both sides. Euronymous was the mentor of the scene and with his influence done, most black metal bands started mellowing out.
