Was at Best Buy the other day,and saw a collecter's edition of Independence Day.Anyone heard of this, and if so,is it any different than the Five Star Collection edition that has been out for a while?

Get the 5 Star! Get it now! It went out-of-print a while ago, so it should soon be impossible to get. The "collector's edition" just includes the first disc of the 5-Star-Edition.

I don't really know which is better but I do know that (I believe it's) Fox is taking out all these 2-disc set for a bunch of movies that had, not long ago, already come out with 2-disc sets. Examples: Cast Away, Sound of Music, ID4, and a few others I can't remember. And they're all being released in those cardboard cases (don't know the term, not the snap-case). Anyway, yet again another way to keep making us paying for the movies we already have. Like the dirt bags at the credit card companies. We are already paying them huge amounts of money in interests and they still call wanting us to add protections and insurance and a sorts of crap. WE ARE ALREADY GIVING YOU ENOUGH OF OUR MONEY!!! PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE AND LET ME KEEP AT LEAST A LITTLE SO I CAN GO AND SPEND IT ON BUYING A MOVIE I ALREADY HAVE CAUSE I WANT TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE MOVIE INDUSTRY CAUSE THEY'RE SO POOR!!!

(So I'm a bit upset, what can I say?)

Er... this is the other way around... Fox are now releasing new versions of some of their movies on DVD that are far worse than the original releases, so there's absolutely no reason to buy the DVDs again.

Uh... ok...

You certainly shut me up quick! :funny:

By the way, does that mean that this new 2-disc Cast Away version, for instance, is not as good and doesn't contain as many extras as the first 2-disc version of the movie?

Man, it really sucks that I'm trembling every time I buy a dvd for fear of a new and better version coming out tomorrow. 2 months ago I was pondering buying Scarface, now they came out with the Anniversary edition. Close call not buying the special edition!

Originally, "Cast Away" was released as a pretty good 2-disc DVD. Then FOX stopped producing the 2-disc in favor of a 1-disc version, which only contained the 1st disc of the original 2-disc DVD set (the disc that contained the feature itself). This, of course, made it cheaper for FOX to produce the disc. They did the same with many other movies, but now it seems that they're re-releasing some of the 2-disc versions again for a limited time. They're 100% COMPLETELY identicaly to the original 2-discs.

They have different packaging and art though. Most of 'em look good. Cast Away's new cover looks horrible though.

I was gonna pick up POTA 2-disc for $9 at Target (pricing error), but I didn't like the movie enough.

You should've bought it anyway. I bought it for two reasons:

1) It's a fantastic DVD
2) Need to have Tim Burton complete on DVD (which I now have)

I guess I'm thinking too economically.

Plus my collection has no Burton. Not that I dislike his movies though.

The best Burton DVDs are POTA and Ed Wood, but the latter has only been released in Europe ( yeah! ;) ). The Nightmare Before Christmas DVD is extremely excellent, not only because it includes a commentary and a documentary, but it also includes two brilliant old Tim Burton short-movies. Sadly though, the DVD features a non-anamorphic widescreen transfer.
The Edward Scissorhands DVD isn't nearly as good, but it's still a classy movie presented fairly well on disc. But Tim Burton is THE worst commentary-track commentater on the planet. He can effortlessly put you to sleep in just a few minutes.

Whoa! I didn't know this!! You just made me VERY glad I bought ID4 when it was still the 5-star edition, and very happy I've got the original release of "Cast Away".

But for anyone looking for the older releases, check out Half.com or Amazon.com. People sell used DVDs there all the time, you know sometimes you buy one without thinking and later realize "Why the hell did I buy this??" Hehe, well you may be able to get the 5-star ID4 secondhand. Probably in good shape too. I don't know about anyone else, but I like to keep my DVD collection in top shape.
