was it just me, or did any one else act rather emotional to the death of a certain person? I was thrown into some sort of depression after the fifth book, and am very upset that there is no sixth book to focus on and bring me out. does anyone else feel the same way? and i already know i focus way to much on books.

Well at the end, Nicholas says that he most likely will not choose to stay on earth as he did, but, there is still a chance that sirius would want to be there to see Harry through his toughest years coming up.

I had read this clue to Sirius's death on mugglenet. This is what it says: "On Harry's first night at Grimmauld Place, the entire house sits down to dinner. In total, 13 of them eat together. According to Trelawney in PoA, when 13 people dine together, the first one to rise is the first to die. No prizes for guessing who rises first here: 'Sirius started to rise from his chair.'"
Remember in POA how Ron and Harry got up from the 13 at the table at Christmas? Neither of them know who rose first. I think this means that one of them will without a doubt die before the series is over. J.K. wouldn't make this superstition come true only part of the time.

JKR said on Dateline that a major character was going to die in book 5. She did not say a major character was going to disappear or vanish from the face of the earth or what have you in book 5.

You heartless monster!!!!!!!! What do you have against him? You can't expect him to be perfect, hide his temper, and be all-forgiving. After all, he was locked up innocently with the most hated, dreadful creatures in the world (HP world, of course) for 12 long years...almost sucking out his will to live. He's had a pretty crappy life, what with everyone thinking he killed Harry's parents, Pettgrew, and 12 by-standing muggles and all. I think of all people he has the right to be a little angry at times.

I don't like Sirius. He seems like an almost too perfect character. I know that he has flaws and all, but I really hate him because he seems too.....................I don't know. And a good person would control his temper and think before acting. He relies too heavily on impulses, the reason that got him killed.

Well, when I read that Sirius dies, I threw teh book across the room, then burst out crying and called a couple friends to share my grief (them saying it's only a book wasn't the right answer). Then I had nightmares and felt really lousy for a week. I also had to take some days off from work because of high fever- this trauma might have contributed, but I can't be sure ;). And because of this very unfair treatment of Sirius by JKR, I am now prejudiced againts the whole series a bit- it just makes me feel uncomfortable and took some joy out of reading the book. Well, I just think that treating this character so unfairly was a bit of a construction error on the part of JKR. I hope she does something about it and doesn't just drop him off like that- myaybe at least some sort of a message from the other world that he is finally happy, reunited with his friends, or something.
We, Sirius lovers, should stand united, so cheers to all of you out there!
And of course, I understand and respect all those who hate the character.

Thanks, LOTRfan, for your sympathy! I think teh main reason people are drawn to Sirius (and Lupin) characters is that he really is a tragic, romantic hero in a classical sense. Too bad JK chose to make him that tragic... Although I personally think that we will hear about him again. Sadly, I now think he is dead but then the boundary between life and death isn't tight in HP. And since JK said his death was essential to the plot, I see possible a few explanations:
1. The death of the father-brother substitute makes Harry determined to choose a path he wouldn't have otherwise chosen (not going over to the Dark Side, but we have seen him using an unforgivable curse, so he has some potential here) to revenge himself.
2. The grief releases Harry's true power of of love & empathy and this leads him to defeat Voldemort.
3. Voldemort or his supporters manipulate Harry again into believing the dead can be brought back (would Harry fall for the trick again? Probably not, and this time it may have been the real thing). I also believe Harry would try to restrain his 'heroic' attempts, and either it would bring about a great harm, if he manages to do so, or if if he just goes ahead and plays hero again, he might succeed, which proves that one should follow one's heart.
3. Sirius's ghost tells Harry how to defeat Voldemort (I have seen something like that in classical mythology, I think) or gives some other important information. This is the one I find most likely.
I also find it plausible that Harry may cross over to the other side where his meets all his loved ones but comes back to complete his mission.

Pretty good theories. I agree mostly with all of them, except for # 4. And I hope Harry wouldn't be stupid enough to fall for #3 again.
(Bambi, you put two #3's by accident so when I refer to "4" I mean the fourth theory down)

A ghost would be terrible. And doubts?

that would suck....that's why J.K. made it completely clear that it isn't possible through the ending of OOTP.

*starts humming "If you could read my mind"* :D
Watch LOTR 1 around Boromior's death. Something about that scene I think deals with HP

I don't think Harry could have died in this book, considering the series is named for him and he's the main character.

In LOTR, Boromir dies. Then Faramir sees his dead body (or its vision) carried on the river in an elven boat. How does that relate to HP??!??? I am very curious...

I think it's the way he dies rather than what actually happened. I think it relates to Snape but that's just me.

Think about it. Boromir is like an anti-hero. Not really a villian, actually a hero but falls prey to evil. Snape is obviously a good person but an anti-hero. I think that Snape will die to save Harry like Boromir died to save the hobbits. I think this would suck eggs.

Yes- a likely theory that has been brought up before. I would also think that there is a good chance he will turn/ appear to turn to the Dark side. And Wormtail. too, may very well meet a similar fate (dying to protect Harry).

Yeah. I'm losing interest in HP now for some reason. I find it a mind rotting book now. Because it's so predictable and JKR has destroyed the series.
