Just wondering what you guys think about the upcoming blue laser dvd technology. Apparently they will be able to hold 27GB of data. I guess this could be used to show movies in hdtv or maybe all of the movies of a particular series or a couple seasons of a tv show on one dvd.
I only hope I won't have to buy a new dvd player. Or at least I hope that the new players will be backward compatible. I kind of get the feeling that it may start out as a niche product for those with a high definition tv. I doubt that the current format is going anywhere for a while. That is unless the new dvds will not cost anymore to manufacture. I'm anxious to see what the final specs will be and how it applies to the current format.

They (Industry) are bickering over the specs. Some have them compatible with the current format, some don't. Big power struggle. I think we are still a ways off. www.thedigitalbits.com occasionally addresses this on their site. You should check it out. Its got a lot of good info.

it should be compatible with the old format. it would be unfair to make everyone have to go and buy new players, plus if they make it compatible with the current format, they can start using this format right away, and will sell more of them because anyone with a dvd player will be able to own this format.

Blu-ray discs, hold up to 23GB of data, or nearly five times as much as existing DVDs and enough for two hours of digital satellite high-definition programming.

DVD players right now use a "red" laser to read the discs. The industry wants to move to a "Blue" laser that runs at a narrower wavelength allowing for greater compression of those little pitches that represent the 1 and 0s of binary information format, therefore you get a massive increase in the amount of data that can be stored on a disc.
to put it simply. you can hold a lot more information on a disc that can be read with a blue laser.

OOOOO Ok I get it.......then if that means it can hold more info. then does that mean better sound, better picture and more special features???? if it does bring it on!
but on the other hand.......i am concerned about the price and will my existing DVD discs be compatible with this player......if it doesn't.....then DON'T BRING IT!!!!!!

Bigger, better image and sound.
The more storage space there is, the less compression there needs to be when they digitize the footage, and eventually place it on the disc, all meaning you get better quailty.
The new players, which won't be consumer products for about another year, maybe two, will be able to play old discs. The DVD standards organization is just arguing final details about compatability yadda yadda yadda.

i like the idea of this new format, i just think they should make these blue laser dvds to be able to play on people's current players because not everyone can afford to go out and buy a new player right away. plus if they did that they can just release all the new dvds that come out in this format instead of having two formats.

As long as it will work for the hundreds of dvds I already have, I'm all for it. I don't so much mind buying a new dvd player but having two in my entertainment center would suck. I need to get rid of my vcr anyways though lol

Yeah, this also is a reminder that the great collections we're ammasing will one day be obsolete....
You have any idea how many Laser Discs my parents bought back in the day? Their house is full of them...

Yeah I know. I remember Laser Disc. I had a pretty good collection going before dvd came along. I kind of miss 'em to be honest with you. They had a lot going for them. My Laser Disc of Ed Wood was a beautiful version of that movie. But price wise they were a little steep. But I think they did have a loyal customer base. Just not enough to push it over the top.
