View Full Version : What happened to the Possession gendre?

Is this sub gendre or whatever its classified as, or called, or referred to....even alive? The only movies that stand out is the Exorcist and the Omen(although the Omen is a subgendre altogether, kind of like the apocalyptic gendre), but the Exorcist is problably the freakiest movie from this subgendre or whatever its called, the atmosphere, the in-your-face religious overtones, the disturbing aroma it has, the frightening Linda Blair, the vulgar cursing, the demonic voice, the obscenities(jaming a cross downstairs? gah...) and the twist of the head, the serpent tongue, the puking, bloody disgusting.
But what happened to these type of movies? I guess Stigmata and End of Days are similiar, but were they scary in the Exorcist sense?
Will the Exorcist 4: the Beginning bring back this subgendre?

i think they stopped making those movies because either they stopped doing that well, or they offended religious people to much.

I think they stopped making them because possession films suck IMO.

also some of them are just badly made like lost souls or the omen 4.

There were some good Euro films in this genre too,
the one that stands out for me was "The Devil Within Her" aka "Beyond The Door." The possession scenes in this film were very chilling, including one head twisting scene that works because of the hideous smile on the woman's face as she twists her head.
It had the atmosphere and certainly stands out as one of the better Exorcist style films, and I recommend it.
Others were 'House Of Exorcism," "Abby," a black exploitation possession film, and a very classic cult film called "The Tempter" that has a considerable following. There are probably somemore that I'm missing, but these are just a few of the ones that are known and not-so-well-known.
