I don't think Cold Mountain is coming out this year, I believe Miramax pushed it back to next year because Harvey Weinstein felt nothing could beat Return of the King.

Open Range
I am really happy to see that someone else thinks that Open Range will be up for Best Picture. I have been waiting for Costner to come out with another movie like this, with a strong story and plenty of action. These roles suit him so well!! With Robert Duvall and Annette Bening, I think that Open Range will be another huge hit for Costner that will earn him a Best Picture nomination!

I don't think Pirates of the Caribbean will get nominated for any major awards, but it should get nominated for effects, costumes, etc.
And I think Lord of the Rings: Return of the King stands the best chance of any LOTR movie to win for Best Picture, since it's the final part of a large story. That is probably what killed the other parts (FOTR and TTT), in the end. The Academy didn't want to award an incomplete story, no matter how amazing its parts.
Also, I would say that the 3 lead actors in Seabiscuit should get acting nominations, but I'm afraid that they might cancel each other out. So, they might move either Chris Cooper or Tobey Maguire to Best Supporting Actor category. Also, don't be surprised if William H. Macy ends up with a Best Supporting Actor nomination. And I think Jeff Bridges should be nominated in the Best Actor category.

Here's a list of all the potential oscar nominees for best pic.
Return of the King
The Last Samurai
Master and Commander
The Alamo
Seabiscuit
Big Fish
Cold Mountain
Open Range
Maybe Kill Bill Volume I and Volume II(if this gets released before they anounce oscar nominess)
And the rest are pretty low profile, many of you might not know what these movies are about but they look like oscar quality films
The Missing
The Company
The Statement
Lost in Translation
BTW, why is everyone mentioning Mona Lisa Smile as frontrunner isnt it just a comedy.
As for locks, im pretty sure its gonna be ROTK, Samurai and Cold Mountain. As for Mountain im sure, they're releasing it this year. Even though im a huge Rings fan, im pretty sure it wont win, its either gonna be Cold Mountain or Last Samurai.

It based on a book and the cast composed of Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renee S. and Natalie Portman. It is about or have something to do with Civil War.

the only thing certain for now is ROTK getting nominated for best picture and tons of other awards. seabiscuit is this summer's road to perdition, so it's likely it's also gonna be forgotten by oscar season.
ROTK is also destined to win the award for best visual effects (like the first two), and just so some of you know, only three films can qualify for this award, so the competition (for now) could be reloaded or revolutions, and hulk.
anyway, why don't we talk about the MTV movie awards next year? at least it'll be easier to predict next year's nominees, plus ROTK is surely gonna win here. pirates of the caribbean is surely gonna get nominated for best picture, as well as johnny depp for male performance, keira knightley for breakthrough performance, and geoffrey rush for best villain. whaddya think?
kryptonian_boy
07-30-2003, 10:30 AM
I know it's strange to say, but I think Road To Perdition was forgotten for most of the major awards (Paul Newman's supporting actor nomination the exception) because it was considered too gloomy (though Oscar voters often vote for moody films). Also could have to do with a bias against graphic novels (seen as being like comic books, popular but not high art).
Seabiscuit won't be forgotten in that way, because: 1)the source material is a best-selling, highly regarded biography, 2)the story covers both the Great Depression, and a true-life uplifting story, and 3)the list of top-notch acting and action is too great to ignore. Sure, RTP had Tom Hanks (who should have gotten nominated for Best Actor, imo) and Paul Newman, but not much after that (Jude Law was effective, but had too small a part).
I expect Seabiscuit will be among the Oscar favorites.
St.MaartenGyal
07-30-2003, 03:01 PM
Yeah, Pirates of the Caribbean won't get nominated for any big awards like Best Picture or Best Actor for Johnny Depp. But Special Effects and Costume etc, yes.
Lord of the Rings probably won't win again, and neither will Peter Jackson, as much as he deserves it. Its too much fantasy for the stiff bastards at the Academy. lol As close to fantasy as they get is the Animated Category.
And we all know Finding Nemo has that :D
And as someone else said as well, the Oscars are pretty much predecided. They either go with the popular vote to please people or reject the favorite because there was too much damn hype around it anyway. Cases in point?
Julia Roberts' win for Erin Brockovich: great role, kudos to Julia, but with all the hyper surrounding America's Sweetheart, did you really think they were going to give it to someone else?
Denzel Washington's Best Actor for Training Day combined with Halle Berry's win the same year for Monster's Ball: This I totally hated. Just to make him first/second black man to do blah blah blah? Support the hype in a year where everyone was crying racism in movies "they don't give the black people a chance dammit!" Training Day was just a vile movie and for the Academy to embrace it as it did, well, then the makers of other such vile movies should flip 'em the finger if they complain again.
Halle Berry, gold star in MB. But again...if there hadn't been all that hype, do you really think she would have gotten it? Nahhhh
Martin Scorcese losing: Poor Martin. his eyebrows about fell off when he lost. :( poor soul. Anyway. Again, a crapload of hype surrounding him...and to piss him off again. The Oscars held it back from him. It's kinda like Susan Lucci with the Emmys. She had to win once before she died, right? Maybe when Martin shows up with an oxygen tank, he can accept for Gangs of Miami or some other such nonsense.
I wasn't surprised when either of these people won or lost. It's what I've come to expect from the Oscars. Kinda like everything else, like Miss Universe...you just KNOW Miss USA is gonna be there, even if she does look like two miles of bad highway. lol
Cheers! :D

Good choice, i heard good stuff about it, i might watch it when it comes out on dvd. But as for a best pic nomination, i dont think it has a chance. They never recognize small independent films, its always the big budget epics. And some epics have been pure trash: The English Patient and Shakespeare in Love.
KayTang999
07-30-2003, 09:35 PM
Well, for the past two year, they have something like In the Bedroom, The Hours, and The Pianist which are all small film, but I guess they are not independent film. May be they might get for Foreign Film, or not.
I think the academy should recognize small films that are diverse and well made. I think stick to the big hollywood movies that has a trend only make it boring. They should encourage small filmaker by recognize them. So that we get to see something new and different.

Cruise won't win. Period. Now don't get me wrong, I love the guy and I'm a HUGE HUGE fan, but if he didn't win for Magnolia or Born on the fourth of July, which were some of the greatest performances ever performed by an actor (let alone best performance of the year) than I have no hope left.
Who cares anyway? The Academy are bloody bastards who choose not to recognize great cinema or actors, directors, etc until they are dead or too old to accept their awards.
Remember all the major awards Stanley Kubrick won? Not to mention the treatment Martin Scorsese recieved.

Blueman, get a grip on yourself, mac.
And my name is St. MaartenGyal, learn a person's name if you want to try and insult them.
First off, it was not a racist comment. Where in my entire post did you see anything racist?
My statement simply meant, in a year of hype that the Academy was mistreating black actors and actresses, they gave it to Denzel for a performance that I do not think rivaled anything else he has ever done. I have seen Denzel in much better performances, Training Day IN MY OPINION, since we're all entitled to one, was just a vile, disgusting movie. I don't think it deserved Oscar nods.
And FYI for people who still can't get it through their skull, Halle Berry is not even completely black, likewise with me. We're both from mixed parentage, so just take your stupid comments and put 'em in your pipe and smoke it like a joint, maybe it'll relax you, mac.
My post was about hype determining who wins the Oscar, not race. In case your eyes forget to see, I mentioned Julia Roberts, and she is no more black than Vanessa Redgrave.
Now then. After that. :D I do think Halle's performance was great, and I do think Julia's performance was great, and Denzel was all right, but if the hype hadn't been there surrounding their nominations, I really don't believe any of them would have one.

Cruise may as well win. The Academy plays favorites. It's got as much voting sense as the staffers at some gossip paper.

i have to disagree with whoever thinks that small films or indie films are overlooked. it seems in the last few years, most of the winners, were these kinds of films. the only exception i can even think of was gladiator. look at what happened to saving private ryan, that is the one that most people i know wanted to win. but what won, shakespeare in love, and what movie is more probably has a better chance over time of becoming a classic movie, saving private ryan.
most of the people who watch the academy awards, want shows like the lord of the rings movies to win. but instead these weird movies win. when nicole kidman for best actress for the hours, most people i know hadn't even heard of that movie. it just seems to me that most critically aclaimed movies just turn out to be plan bad.

Yeah, after the first two films and nominations, he should definitly win for the third. He deserves it. His eye, his touch, his dedication to a great masterpeice. Although he's probably not the best director out there, his work should be more appreciated, and after not winning the first two, he might as well win the third, for the conclusion on the story.

I think Finding Nemo is a lock for Oscar for animation cause the rest of the year, there is nothing else that would be able to compete with it.
Peter Weir will definitely be nominated for Master and Commander. It will probably be a best picture nom as well.

ROTK WILL WIN!!!
ROTK better have something more than just a lot of battle scenes with CGI monsters or else it won't be getting much respect from the Academy. LOTR:TTT was pretty awful in that respect. The entire franchise can make all the money it wants, it will be looked down upon as a kiddie franchise and in that case, it won't matter how popular it has become.
