this movie looks like it will at least get considerable nominations. Russel Crowe has acted in more nominated movies in the past 6 years than anything I can remember.

For some reason, posting incredibly long URL's as links on these boards never works, so you'll have to cut and past, making sure there's no spaces in it.
thanks alot.. But I can't download it right now, because of server failure... I'll try again later..

Both Crowe and Boyd look very weird, it may be their hair. And wasn't this movie suppose to come out this summer, but for some reason they pushed it back. Does anybody know why?
Yeah, it was pushed back to November because they decided it was an Oscar contender and those usually come out at the end of the year. They don't want it associated with the summer action films.. or something like POTC. Crowe and Billy are both quite blonde in the film. The characters come from a series of novels, so their looks, especially Crowe's, are made to look appropriate based on the books descriptions.
I like the preview and I'm lookin' forward to it. I think I'm just in the "action on the high seas" mood right now.

The film LOOKS awesome, however I'm worried about it turning into one giant cliche'.
Like the line where one of the ship mates says something like "the men need you to do this and give up" and Crowe says "No, they need a strong leader, and I'll be that leader" and the thing with the little boy. I know I'm only getting all this from the preview, but I don't know if I'll like the movie itself all that much...
I think the capt. was just giving leadership advice to his lieutenant..the one with the scar on his face.. at least that's what the trailer made it look like to me. The kids should be an interesting part, because they were a part of the crew same as anyone else, which meant they were just as likely to get killed.
Apparently they got started on their military careers very young back in those days.

this movie looks cool but i am still gonna be in the mood for johnny depp on the black pearl and not russel crowe on his ship thingy

This character is cheery, good-natured, happy-go-lucky, plays the violin and laughs himself into a fit at his own bad jokes. It's not quite the same as the quiet and brooding characters he's done lately.

I agree, hes played a lot of different characters and why is everyone bashing this guy, hes a pretty good actor: Insider and Beautiful Mind. As for the movie, i read somewhere that its based on a 20 volume novel set. I forget which volume they're basing this movie on. It would be really interesting to read them all, but 20 novels is too much!!
I have started reading the books, but it's not easy getting into the first one... after about the first half of Master and Commander, it really takes off. These books have a lot more humor than I expected. Some really laugh out loud kind of stuff.
They're doing another test screening tonight and I'm hoping to get a review soon.

It'll be fun but as was said earlier I hope not cliched. However, Pirates turned out to be the best movie of the summer in my opinion so we'll see. But there is ROTK
Well, I wasn't the one lucky enough to see it, (although I'm not sure I like the idea of seeing an unfinished film).. It's from a Patrick O'Brian fan on an email discussion list who's read all the books, so it's a more informed opinion from someone who knows what to expect or look for in such a film.
Everything looked just as it should, I think, if we can excuse a certain amount of rugged deshevelment in our Captain. The cannons jumped and recoiled like proper guns should. I can't say much about the hats. Sometimes they were on, sometimes off, I didn't find it affect me much. Holystones, mess kids, hammocks, salt beef, ships bells, all where you'd expect them. Seamen suitably grubby with gray teeth.
There was much more than I expected of the books in it.... Bonden, Mowett, Davies, Plaice, Howard of the Marines, Pullings, sweet-voiced Hollum, Weevils, albatrosses, Killick, toasted cheese, a quick shot of a letter on Jack's desk beginning "Dearest Sophie,".
Seeing Jack & Stephen playing music through the stern windows as the Surprise slipped off into the night, made me supremely happy.
The action was ripping good, the story may have been difficult to follow for those not familiar with the books. There was a lot to it.
Fans of Jack will admire Crowe's rakish good looks, complete with mangled ear, and his natural authority, but Crowe's humor comes from a mischievious place, not from our Jack's simplicity.
Bettany's Stephen was enjoyably peevish, and took an unfeigned delight in birds and beasts. Only a passing reference was ever made to "spys", but the plot left no room for that part of Stephen's character. It was not omitted, so much as unnecessary.
If the movie lacked anything it lacked POB's sublime humour. With so much plot, we had little time to delve into our characters idiosyncracies, wherein so much of the humor lies. Although I believe POBophiles will 'get' more than the audience at large.
Their relationship is certainly central to the film. I hope it is not lost in editing.
The precious midshipman Lord Blakeney, who we see suffer a broken arm in the trailer, is a central character, befriending Stephen and generally being loveable. It is a credit to the young actor that I didn't wish him drowned. His storyline combines that of many of the midshipmen in the books. Cherubic as the boy is, he never rankled.
Oh and, btw, she also said that she filled out the survey form with high praise for the film.
Hi The URL for the fullscreen trailer link doesn't work. I can't get it to download, are you sure that the link is right??

this movie looks cool enough for me. i dont like russell crowe but i do like billy boyd. i think the high seas adventure movies are making a comeback now with the enormous success of POTc and im sure this one will do some damage when it comes out too, until the last samurai and LOTR ROTK come out.
Looking forward to this picture I am.
