That's a really hard question. But I think the five DVDs I got the most entertainment, quality and pleasure out of, in no order, are:

1. Back to the Future: The Complete Trilogy Box (Universal)

Great movies, great features, an overall great box set. The first two are two of my favorite movies of all time -- the first is a great movie overall and the second is just brilliant in its creativity. Features were all I could hope for, minus the Eric Stoltz footage.

2. UHF (MGM/UA)

I admit it -- this movie is stupid. Nonetheless, it's one of my favorite movies of all time, I love Weird Al. I was thrilled to know it was on DVD, and I was more thrilled to find out that the DVD is well worth it. While it lacks a making-of doc that might have finished the presentation, widescreen picture is great, deleted scenes featurette is better, and the commentary is pure gold.

3. Mallrats - Collector's Edition (Universal)

Critics be damned! This movie is funny! It's not as smart as the other Kevin Smith films, of course; Mallrats is like the sophomore cousin of the much smarter senior comedies Chasing Amy and Dogma. But the DVD is very entertaining, the extensive package of special features makes up for the slight flaws in this fantastic slacker comedy entirely.

4. Monty Python's The Meaning of Life - Two-Disc Special Edition (Universal)

Just an hour before I was planning to give in and pay some $30.00 for the old, featureless Image disc, Universal announced that they were reissuing this flawed classic as a two-disc special edition set, and I was thrilled. When I finally got it, I wasn't let down at all, either. The DVD is filled with not only informative and well-produced features, but, like the Holy Grail DVD, also a bunch of Monty Python sketches disguised as featurettes.

5. Monty Python's Life of Brian - Criterion Collection (Criterion)

You could buy the Anchor Bay disc, which has cast biographies...or you could get this fantastic Criterion disc, with deleted scenes, two commentary tracks, and the best digital presentation of this movie I've ever seen. Brian obviously was not treated with care, and the VHS transfer I'd had was just horrendous. But to have it now, not only in widescreen, but digitally mastered...pure pleasure.

I also have to say that the trio of Evil Dead - Book of the Dead, Evil Dead II - Limited Edition Tin, and Army of Darkness - Limited Edition is hard to beat, but the first two are missing the deleted scenes and documentary that would have perfected the package, and the Army of Darkness DVD is framed incorrectly (1.77:1 instead of 1.85:1) and the Director's Cut's added footage looks horrendous (Region 3 DVD is so much better).

Also notable are the Lord of the Rings Extended Sets, Se7en Platinum Series, Fight Club SE, the Die Hard SE Trilogy, and The Princess Bride SE.

My most wanted DVD that doesn't exist is an uncut DVD of the Frighteners Signature Series Laserdisc...including the theatrical cut of the film via branching. Come on, Universal...when King Kong is about to come out!
