Just buy whatever you want. It won't matter. I guess if you want to start off with good stuff, I'd get FOTR Extended Edition. Great movie, video, sound, and tons of extras.

Ok webmonkey which dvd did you get first?

The first dvd I bought was Austin Powers - the spy who shagged me.

The first DVD I bought was the Mask of Zorro... Not that I'm recommending that (I'm recommending Casablanca Anniversary Ed. & Brazil Criterion Ed.), but the reason it was the first DVD I bought was because it was a new movie I hadn't seen at the time, and I just was wondering if DVDs were all that they said they were.

Huh? There was no Matrix Special Edition. That project was scrapped a long time ago. You must mean the The Matrix/ Revisited 2- pack.
