What a great day!
The LOTR presentation was fun and full of suprises.
It began a great collage of clips from TTT and then Richard Taylor came out and started talking about the SFX of TTT and the armor that was used. Then the first suprise guest showed up; Sala Baker(sauron/ he also did some scenes as Lurtz in TFOTR) in full urukhai armor and make up. Taylor went on about what kind of armor the urukhai use and how much. The he went into the hobbit wardrobe. He had a young lady being turned into a hobbit comlete with furry feet, Richard Taylor said we need an "expert to inspect this hobbit." Out comes the brilliant Dominic Monaghan. He got a big roar from the crowd. Dom went on and on about the fun he as had filming the LOTR trilogy, then out of no where I hear "precioussssssss." Out pops Andy Serkis. He talked about how he got the role as Gollum and as a treat, we the fans were treated to his audition tape. That got some laughs. After Andy saw it, he said: "just how did I get the job???" Then he talked about how he brought a couple of friends with him, then behold Sean Astin and the brilliant Elijah Wood. Sean talked about his short film and we were treated to a clip. Elijah talked about his happiness to be apart of the LOTR project. Elijah did his impression of a ringwraith scream, not bad.
Finally the moment came, an exclusive preview of ROTK. This was actually a preview of a preview, they showed only a few minutes of the dvd preview. The majority of it was "behind the scenes." Although there was a good minute of actual movie footage. The music tracks in the preview were: ISENGARD UNLEASHED, HELMS DEEP, EVENSTAR.
FEW NOTES HERE: (SPOILER WARNING)
Catapults will be used in the battle at the black gate, I am assuming they are Gondorian catapults.
Pick-ups are still going on in New Zealand.
Here is a scene by scene description of the preview. There was some dialouge in the preivew also:
PJ and Ian Mckellen along with Billy Boyd introduced the clip
First 2 minutes were interviews with Sean Astin, Elijah wood, Alan Lee Marc Ordesky and Peter Jackson.
One scene showed PJ watching a rough cut and the camera cut to the screen they were watching and it showed Frodo and Sam in shelob's lair
Slide show of the stills that were released on the official site
(NOW THE MOVIE FOOTAGE) (Movie footage was played to HELMS DEEP TRACK)
Riders charging on Pellenor fields
GONDORIAN ARCHERS raising their bows
Minas Tirith
Gandalf riding with Pippin in the forest on Shadowfax
Orcs and Urukhai making their way by night to Minas Tirith
Frodo and Sam walking at the crossroads
Close up of a scared Frodo
Gandalf with Pippin in Minas Tirith
Pippin: Do you think there is any hope left for Frodo and Sam???
Gandalf: There was never any hope, just fool's hope.
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
In Theatres
December 2003
When Gandalf said that last line, the crowd went silent for a second, you could feel the emotion in the room. Then when the logo popped up, the crowd erupted.
More stuff was supposed to be shown, but the video player went wacky for awhile and that wasted alot of time and that room, ROOM 20 was booked for another presentaion so they couldn't extend their time.
After that I met with my "friends" we talked with Elijah and the gang. BTW, Elijah says hello. Elijah still has work to do in NewZealand. Richard Taylor told me ROTK "Will be a riot." nuff said. Also I have been invited to view a screening of TTT:EE. So once again I will be leaving for NZ in a weeks time. There was supposed to be a preview of TTT:EE, like I said above the video player messed up and they ran out of time.
So that's a wrap on COMIC-CON 2003.

The evenstar theme was played during the first minutes of the preview, it was played mostly over the interviews.

JEDI, i have a question for you, concerning the ROTK reshoots (which i know is of little relevance to this poll) are all the reshoots being done at Stone Street and the general Wellington studios, or are they more abroad, like in the south island for the bits of Rohan that they might need or wherever they shot gondor, or other locations in the North/South Islands. Just wondering. Also, how long are you going to be in NZ for? ( i live here)
As i said, just wondering
JEDI5150
07-21-2003, 01:07 AM
As I understand it, the majority of reshoots are being done at stone street and wellington studios, There was a recent set of pick-ups at the on-location set of Minas Tirith. I will be in NZ for 3 days.

another thing jedi,
has PJ provided any other justification for not putting in the Scouring Of The Shire in ROTK, other than the "flashback" of it that we got in the Mirror Of Galadriel in FOTR.
Also To get that footage, it would obviously have had to have been shot, but isn't there the slightest possibility that PJ has some footage that he didn't include in that wee bit that he could put into ROTK sometime soon, seeing that he added Saruman's address to the wild men the day before delivery. He could have been keeping us in suspense until he made it public that it wasn't in, and then use what he has to give us all one hell of a shock

it is a bit sad, as it is such a nice big chapter in the book, but i do hope that PJ will somehow incorporate into his storyline the hobbits coming back in all their armour(at least merry and pippin, as frodo might go straight off the the Grey Havens, even though there is a decent gap in time, but there was about 20 years that PJ jumped through in FOTR when bilbo left to when frodo left with the ring. )It was such a cool point in the book when they come back in all their armour, having got used to it for a year, and then coming back to their nice little Hobbiton in the Shire, where all the other hobbits stare at their armour. I like Pippin's armour
PsYkOoOoO
07-21-2003, 07:45 AM
well they might come back in armor yes...but what happened in the book might not happen...like saruman's death

Kinda has a point there, the mirror of galadriel scene in FOTR would be a bit pointless if he had nothing to follow it up with... to counteract this, we saw Orcs in the Shire so whats happeneing?
adt100
07-21-2003, 11:15 AM
Why would it be pointless? As they say in the commentary, it is their homage to the Scouring of the Shire.
I don't understand how even now, after all the debate their is still such apparent uncertainty about the SOS. It won't be in ROTK or ROTK: EE. That's just the way it is.
JEDI5150
07-21-2003, 12:05 PM
First off: The only thing close to a filming of the scouring of the shire is what you saw in the mirror of Galadriel. Thats it. One of the main reasons PJ decided to leave that part out is because he thought for fans who have not read the books, they would not understand it and would not like it. He didn't mention this, but I am going to, the critics; Critics really hate it when there is a twist at the end of a film. Scouring is a major twist. I truly don't want to hear or read a critic talking about how the ending didn't make sense or ROTK had dumb ending.
Just know that ROTK will be awesome.

Another thing for Jedi
Do you have any info on the ROTK soundtrack, and how far through Howars Shors is. Last i heard was that he had seen a rough cut of ROTK and was about to start.
For the TTT soundtrack, there were 2 songs, The Riders Of Rohan and another one that happened to debut on some European radio stations before the soundtrack came out. Will this be happening for the ROTK one (if i got my story straight)???
And, do you know what the official rating for the TTT:EE is, as you are going to wellington, i suppose, to see it in a few days. and ROTK will be a PG-13 movie, under contract won't it.
Do you have anything reliable on the lenght that ROTK will be?
If you do know, cheers
JEDI5150
07-22-2003, 01:06 AM
Howard Shore recently saw another cut of ROTK, he will begin to score the film probably starting late August or early September. He has to wait unitll PJ is completely done filming. Like I said before, there still are some pick-ups going on right now.
You do have your story straight on the second subject, there were some exclusive previews of tracks(Riders of Rohan, The White Rider, Forth Eorlingas, Evenstar, The Hornburg) of TTT soundtrack that debuted on an online UK radiostation, I am not sure if that will be the case again for the ROTK soundtrack, we'll know towards late November.
The EE of TTT is a PG-13 rating, it was given that rating a few months back.
As far as the length of ROTK, the last I heard PJ wants to cut the theatrical version down to 3 hours and 15 minutes. PJ did confirm that ROTK the theatrical version would be the longest of the three thearical films.
The Moose

Do you have anything on what howard said about the cut that he saw? When he saw the first cut that he saw, there was some things put on the net that he said, like it was great and all, but has anything come out (or your sources have told you) like that for the recent cut that he saw?
Is there a date set down for when the pickups will be finished. since you will be in wellington (i presume) you have been invited to a screening of the TTT:EE, do you know of anyone like yourself who has got to go along and watch. Like, a couple of months ago, Paul Holmes (a NZ TV personality) got to go along to the reshoots, and his crew went with him, and we saw some of the stuff that was done for the pickups for TTT. It was aired about 2 months ago, but do you think that there is any chance that you will be invited, seeing that you have "sources" and "people" and other places that you get reliable info from??????????
PsYkOoOoO
07-22-2003, 03:50 AM
i dont think the date can be set since there will be a lot of unexpected stuff happening...but for both FOTR and TTT the scoring started in late august...so i guess by around then the filming will end..;)
The Moose
07-22-2003, 03:57 AM
yeah, well, we know that it will be out about the same time as the movie. i don't particularly care if it's before, or after, but only a day or 2 after
JEDI5150
07-22-2003, 12:59 PM
No, I don't think there is a date, PJ doesn't want to rush things. He wants to take his time and make ROTK the best film it could possibly be. Also if there are still pick-ups going on and they ask if I want to go view them then yeah I will go, the last time I was in NZ which was in April, I went to some pick-ups over at the pellenor field location. I'll let them bring it up, I just won't ask.

It is true that in the pellenor fields the enemy will be 200,000 strong against the combined forces of Rohan and Gondor will average out to about 1500 soldiers. When you see the ROTK preview on TTT dvd you will hear Alan Lee confirm it.
As far as this other news about PJ buying a gulfstream or owning a camel and tank. To tell you the truth, it doesn't even sound like PJ to have all these things, he is a low key guy, it would be out of character for him to make those kind of purchases. Although if he did, then more power to him.
Gandollum
07-24-2003, 12:15 AM
First of all, how can 1500 Rohan and Gondorian soldiers take on 200,000 orcs. I find this unbelievable, i always thought it would be 100,000 orcs vs like 20,000 soldiers. If you think about it the Rohirmm have well over 2000 soldiers with them and Gondor plus other areas must have well over 10,000 to 15,000 troops. And in the books do they specifically tell the exact number of forces on each side, or are these numbers just made up by PJ and the writers.
JEDI5150
07-24-2003, 01:28 AM
I don't remember if the book gave specific numbers to the masses who fight at pellenor field. Although 200,000 and around 1500 are the numbers being mentioned by PJ and the writers. I bet it is more around 3000, but of course you have to figure in the casualties of Helms deep and the casualties of the battle for Osgiliath. Also lets not forget that the siege of Gondor takes place before Pellenor field, which would cause more casualties for Gondor. There will be major losses at the siege of Gondor. So when you factor those in, it does seem right to have a small number of soldiers left to fight.
The main thing is that this battle will be HUGE.
PsYkOoOoO
07-24-2003, 02:35 AM
and i like HUGE BATTLES...MUAHAHAHAHA
The Moose
07-24-2003, 03:27 AM
jedi, in the end of TTT we saw a bit of a battle in Osgiliath. do you know if we will be seeing any of it in ROTK that wasn't in the book?
and about PJ's planes and tank,
i means that if war is declared on NZ, PJ can fly away and talk to howard about the soundtrack, and leave his tank and someone can try and shoot people with that, and the sopwith camel with a pilot with pistol will be about as effective as the RNZAF

Damn, that is what I call outnumbered. I was thinking about this and maybe Gondor only does have 1,500. But then I was hoping The Rohirrim would come with about 4,000 Riders(a dismal number) to help.
QUESTION: Is there any report about how many land with Aragorn at the end of the battle? If there's 200,000 Urukhai he's gonna have to bring a whole hell of a lot to end it. I mean, if only maybe a few thousand land with him the odds would seem bloody ridiculous if you catch my drift......;)

Moose: You asked about Osgiliath, I am not sure if we will be seeing Osgiliath in ROTK, although there is a possibility we might because in the book ROTK, there is a part where Denethor gets angry at Faramir and sends hiw away to osgiliath. So that would all depend on how big a role Faramir would have in ROTK.

Just so everyone's clear: by "deep sleep" you did mean literally "sleep" and not a kind of sleep that could'nt be woken up from, right? haha....Sorry it just sounded like you were trying to say "die" in a nice way when I don't think that's at all what you meant. Cuz if you had, well that's definitely straying a bit from the books. The death would be happening a little early for my tastes.

So that would mean its going to be in the TTT:EE...since it was in the preview for TTT. Or could it have been pushed back to ROTK? Cuz I don't see how it would fit in for TTT if she's preparing for Aragorn to enter the Paths of the Dead (that does take place in ROTK if I'm not mistaken).

No that doesn't mean it will be in TTT EE, that scene was always meant to be in ROTK. The editors of LOTR have always stuck scenes from the other movies in the teasers and trailers just to try and sneak one by us. Remember ther first trailer for FELLOWSHIP that was in the theatres??? That trailer had scenes from all 3 movies: Aragorn at helms deep (TTT) Merry bowing to Theoden (ROTK), Arwen in her deep sleep (ROTK).
If you just take the hidden TT preview on the TFOTR EE dvd, you can find a few actual ROTK scenes. For example: The scene where Eowyn is standing on the steps of Edoras, Arwen aproaching the shards of Narsil, and again the scene where Arwen is in her deep sleep.

Or, if you often watch it on the PC like me, just hover you mouse over the bottom right corner. :)
I was watching the preview last night and there are quite a few little scenes that I'd either missed or not thought much of first time around.

not as far as i know. some drives spin the disc in the tray, and others pick it up and spin it. either way it shouldn't damage the disc

Unless you have a big-ass monitor and nice speakers, why would you want to watch it on a computer?

Why should it damage the disk? - it's just a normal dvd drive as any other!
I often watch DVD's (or parts of them - like the features) on my PC because my own TV at the moment is just a regular 14" protable one, whereas my PC has a flat 17" monitor with Creative Labs 5.1 speakers.
You also get a sharper picture on a monitor, though of course when I get my own place I'll hopefully get a more decent TV and watch DVD's on that. :)

my computer is too old to have a dvd drive, but i have a 33" TV, with some awesome resolutiuon, and friends are always saying what an awesome picture it is. that is where i watch my DVDs

Oh, adt100, I can definitly see your point. Computer monitor resolution is way higher then most t.v.'s.
Hey Moose regarding the Pirates Of The Caribbean. According to the Village Cinemas website, POTC should be due around our shores on the 11th of September. Oh well it will be something to watch before ROTK comes out.
I'm from Auckland btw. I'm still thinking whether I should drive back to Wellington to catch ROTK at the Embassy Theatre.
Well I'm still thinkiing about it.
FVD.

yeah. i want to go there just to see it, like some friends of mine did when i saw away in other places. i'm from ChCh. i am thinking about going up to there just to be in the crowd for the premiere, which would be cool, like how many people do you personally know that have been to the world premiere of one of the greatest films of all time? that will be a cool talking point. goddammit, i wnt to be in the premiere screening. i think that i will see POTC sometime after it comes out with some friends and stuff like that. did you get TTT on IMAX in dorkland?
