A new thred for us to renominate and then vote for new picks for previous years oscar picks.
we'll start with 2001 since there is a similer thing being done for 2002
just pick 5 and only 5 films to nominate the best of 2001 and DO NOT spesify which of those five you like the best
The Academys nods were:
A Beautiful Mind
Gosford Park
In the Bedroom
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings
Moulin Rouge
Fanible
07-16-2003, 09:16 PM
Not that it's bad or anything, but it's not new either.
Anywho, are we suppose to pick one of the 5 you selected? Or do we list what 5 movies we thought were the best in 2001? This is gonna be one of those favorites lists isn't it.
Anyways, my selection would be:
Momento
Moulin Rouge
Snatch
Lord of the Rings
A Beautiful Mind
Halofan1
07-16-2003, 09:33 PM
Memento
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Moulin Rouge
Black Hawk Down
Mulholland Dr.
2001 wasn't a real great year in movies, except for these(even though I'm not fond of Moulin Rouge, I do respect the technical aspect.)
EDIT 7/17/2003 - How the hell could I forget about Black Hawk Down?

AI was an excellent film. I was debating on which I should have up on my top 5, between that and Snatch. However I found that while AI was well made and the effects were amazing, Snatch won over me for it's acting, directing, and thought out story.

It's a European film, and it was released across Europe around september 2000. It didn't get a widerelease in the US until january 2001, so you're partially correct. But I'd definetely consider it a 2000 film. And not only because I'm European.

I wish I had a fish, and I'd slap you both. Im still keeping it in my 2001 list, as it was released 2001 here and thats when I watched it. The comment is anal, and about the same as the comment I got when I talked about a preview for 28 Days Later. Are the Oscars English? No, they're American. If Snatch would of won any Oscars, it would of been in the 2001 Oscars, as it was released in America 2001. Its such as stupid thing to argue about when you're only half right.

As The Insider cleared up it was released in Jan of 2001 in the States. I'll agree with that simply because I recall it was released early in the year and sure as hell wasn't released Jan 2000.
Anywho, here are my favorite films of 2001 and I'd go on to say I would've liked for one of them to win the Oscar.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence

Black Hawk Down
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

You have been reading what we've been saying, right? Im not sure where you are, so I can't say precisly anything for you.
But anyways, it was released in Europe 2000, it was released in America 2001.
Fanible is right again (as always). If it were even nominated for an Oscar, it would have been a 2001 oscar, not a 2000 oscar.

I am going to make a judgement call as starter of the thred to declare Snatch a 2000 film, it most likely would have had a New york/ L.A. type engagement if we ran the academy. anyone who voted snatch please use a seperate post to declare a replacement.
P.S. Insider you voted for Frailty but it was released on April 12 2002

Im not sure what you mean by that, but I know for a fact Snatch was in the movie lineup for the picks at the Oscars in 2001, but didn't make it in any category. It almost made cinematography, but Traffic took the spot.
Anywho, so you're changing your 5 picks? Are we movie onto each year, or what else are we doing? I mean I guess just a long thread of favorite picks is ok. We should go up through each year like we did awhile back, as a majority of all of us are going to pick the same films, especially due to how little good films came out 2001.
Dracula

first of all Traffic was in 2000 so you just set back your cause a bit.
Second the list in my first post was a list of the actual oscar nomminees for 2001 not my personal choices which is the second list.
third I will be moving on to 2000 after people get a chance to change their snatch votes.

Los Angeles, California. See that? It was only a preview showing. It didn't nation wide release till January 19th, 2001. And like I said, now for the third time, the film was for 2001 Oscars, not 2000. Even if for some reason it wasn't released 2001, they still had it listed for the 2001 Oscars. We're discussing the 2001 Oscars, not 2000 Oscars.
And for the last time, yes it was released in Europe 2000.

also Black Hwk Down only priemiered in New York and L.A. on December 28th 2001 to be eligable for the oscar. It went wide release on January 18th 2002 but the academy nominated it for 2001, same exact situation.

Like the Oscars, voting is political. Even though I think FOTR is the best film of 2001, I will go ahead and choose The Royal Tenenbaums.
DAMMIT, I LOVE THIS FILM!!!!!!!!!! I rented it not to long ago, and saw it maybe three times in two days. Personally felt Memento was good, but I don't love the movie.
