Just read this info on TORn,

Boston Museum that will be hosting the LOTR exhibit...asking when the exact dates will be. This is the response I got. 'LOTR' will be on exhibit at the Musuem of Science August 1, 2004 through October 30, 2004. We do not have any ticket prices set yet.

Just for incase any of you in the US are interested, let you know how I get on in the Autumn.

well, i live in NZ, and i have been to the exhibition in wellington (i went in january this year, as it was the earliest that i could go)

but anyway, it was bloody awesome, and so worth the wait for you european people. (i mena no offence by that)

i made the mistake of not getting the audio commentary that was available at Te Papa (the national museum of NZ where the exhibition was held), so make sure tthat you do. i know other people who did get it, and there wasn't much on it that wasn't on the FOTR EE

it is damn good

this next bit contains info about the exhibition, which could be considered as spoilers, but i don't know how to do the blackout thingy

my favourite things were Boromir in the boat and Sauron's "costume" if you can call it that. Lurtz's "costume" was cool also. arwen's sword is also very nice, but one thing that did surprise me is how small the evenstar is. in FOTR when Arwen hands it to Aragorn, it seems to be of considerable size, but it was in wellington, and it was rather small. Vilya (Elrond's ring) is also pretty cool.<spoiler/>

I drove down to Wellington from Auckland back in April just to see the exhibit. I knew the exhibit's tenure in Wellington was coming to a close so I thought I better hurry and take a look before New Line takes the entire thing offshore. I went to take a look at the Harley Davidson centenary exhibit before I went to the LOTR exhibit. The Harley exhibit was really cool (but that's another story).

Seeing Boromir's dead body was really freaky. I just couldn't believe how realistic it looked in person. The tower of Isengard was awesome to look at as well. So much dedication sure went into that not to mention the other stuff there. I liked the explanations of how they created everything too especially Treebeard. Very nice indeed.

There were a few items there that were not available such as the phial of Galadriel and Legolas' bow. They were being used for filming ROTK at the time.

All in all it was a trip worth driving to. It was a nice drive too. I still can't get over seeing a Subway in a rural town such as Bulls. Amazing.

FVD.

The Moose
08-04-2003, 04:28 AM
surprising, fellow NZer. Bulls. can't say that i've been there. is it much of a hole? i was in Picton at the time (at my bach) and i went over to wellington for the day on the ferry. it was a really rough day. ferry was tossign about and all. generally quite fun. thhave ya been on the interislander? the arahura was what i was on a 5.30am. from picton. the spray was coming up over the bridge and landing on the top of the ship at some points. that was the start to a very good day

Hey Moose,

No I haven't been on The Interislander yet. Funny enough I haven't even been to the South Island yet. I might spend a weekend out there oneday. Perhaps sometime next year. Time will tell.

Re: Rough day in Wellington. Funny you should mention it. The first time I set foot in Wellington was 4 years ago and from that I remember how windy it was the weekend I was down there. Still I had fun above all.

Nice to chat with you fellow Kiwi.

I just noticed im wicked lucky cuz it only goes to 5 cities in the whole world and i live 15 minutes away from one of them which is Boston. The one thing ive tried to figure out is... after London, does it come to Boston or does it go to Sidney ro maybe Singapore. If Boston comes after London then it will be at the Museum of Science in late January. I cant wait if were next after London.

Hey FVD

to do all the interesting things in the SI you will need a couple of weeks. if ya come across in the Interislander, come on the Lynx (fast ferry run by the Interislander) it is really cool. SI is so much better that the NI. less people, heaps of space. down here, we can drive all day on the road and not see another car all day. that has happened to me once or twice. lots of great stuff to do here.

FVD
08-07-2003, 09:22 PM
Moose,

I would definitely consider taking some time off next year and take a tour of the SI. The SI seems to be the more popular island of the two. There always appears to be more activites to do down there.

I will get down there oneday I know I will. To do some skiing again would be nice. I learned how to ski 10 years ago and I look forward to skiing again.

FVD,

don't come down in the next week, because all the snow here is absolutely shocking. there is so little of it it is not funny. even if you are classified as a "beginner" there is no point in coming. there is enough snow on the learners slopes and the easy intermediate slopes, but it is all pebbly, and hideous. just not worth it. i don't know many NIers that would easily admit to the SI being better than the North. good on ya.

FVD
08-08-2003, 12:39 PM
Moose,

Though Auckland is the largest city in NZ, things up here are so messed up such as the public transportation system for example. The Britomart Terminal has just been completed yet the train network still needs a lot of work.

Compared to cities like Sydney and Brisbane, their train networks blew me away. Auckland has a large task ahead of them. Even Wellington's public transport system exceeds Auckland's.

So yeah some Aucklanders may act all arrogant toward other NZers I guess but at the end of the day I can easily refer to them as being blind.

FVD.

The Moose
08-08-2003, 10:32 PM
good to see that ya aren't like all aucklanders. i agree that sydney's Public transport system is awesome, but i haven't used the one in brisbane. in Chch we have a good transport system. and auckland may be larger, but christchurch is way better

Depending on what figures you read they've sold between 14-17000 pre-orders. They estimate uo to 250k could pass through the doors over the exhibition run, and due to the demand have decided to stay open until 9pm. I have been to the Science museum for years so I'm not sure of capacity, but I would have thought that after the frist few weeks and before Christmas time, weekdays shouldn't be too much of a problem if you get there early. They were advising you pre-book but with it being on for over 3 months I think you'd be ok not to as long as you don't go at the big peak times.

Alright, just got back about 10 minutes ago.. 3 hour trip to London and back on the train.. well worth it.

I even got a Gandalf the Grey figure made by Weta :D(Jamie Beswarick to be precise)
http://www.sideshowtoy.com/mas_assets/large/9304.jpg

It was actually hard to choose cause I was going to get that or an Easterling, but I figured that Gandalf is more HIGHLY recognizable character than an Easterling, plus it was cheaper :D

I mean, even the line was great and that just sounds strange but heres why, outside the entrance are these two awesome Argonath's either side, I think their the bigatures used but can't be sure.

By the way, hang with me I may miss stuff.. hard to remember..

Anyway, I go in.. and the first thing we see is these four, lined up armoured soldier (just the armour setup in the figure) one was an Elf from the FOTR prolouge the other two Rohirrim and one I beleive Gondorian from the prolouge. Then we turn a corner to see two conceptual pictures/paintings or drawings of Aragorn in his costume and the strider hood(ones we see on the FOTR EE) then beside that is Viggos, Aragorn costume.. amazing detail on it, incredible.. then just beside that is the broken Narsil in a case.. my god, it looked incredibly sharp. Then we turn round and theres set up armour.. for Sauron, good god that was creepy. He had his club outstretched a bit and the other arm set up so he was pointing downwards, that was just freaky man. So after that we saw Orlando's Legolas costume, again amazing detail when you get to see it in front of you, behind that on the other side we're his weapons. Beside the costume was Gimlis costume, and i gotta say.. it looked somewhat strange to how we see it in the film because John Rhys Davies wasn't wearing it so.. yeah. Next, I saw Galadriels things for the film, and her dress.. stunning(detail) I mean it's incredible, then her ring and stuff and headress and some other things, then we saw Sarumans robes, but it also showed his Palantir and his stuff used in Orthanc Int. which we hardly even see, yet the detail and accuracy is immense.. There was also Sarumans book there (the one we see when Saruman is looking through at the picture of the Balrog) Gandalf the Greys robes, again stunning but I don't think I need to say this about any costume anymore and also Glamdring was there, lol... Also on display was a Rohirrim saddle, the Uruk Hai helms and Orc helms, and set up armour for the Uruks, moria Orcs, the Warg Riders and other Orcs, then the Gondor ranger costume (Faramirs I think) and a Harad costume.. Then what I saw just was freaky as hell.. The Ringwraith costume, man that seriously was creepy as hell.. also showed the Nazgul weaponry and helms, including the nine servants of Sauron rings.. there was a huge model of Lurtz again heavily detailed.. The Uruk-Hai and Orc weaponry and accessories, I was stunned because I never saw half the stuff in this case in the film.. like an Orc spoon, Orc food knife, just goes to show how much effort there is given. Theres also this cool thing where you get to feel the difference between 2 sets of swords with three swords each, first one was an Elf scimitar from the prolouge, and the difference is immense.. one is quite thick, the other still thick but not as much, and the other still blunt but more realistic, the other was Legolas sword, there was another hands on thing where you could feel two types of Chain mail and I couldn't beleive it, it felt like metal, moved like metal and looked like metal.. yet it's rubber.. odd. lmao, there was this case full of prosthetic Hobbit feet and ears, Elf ears, prosthetic teeth, contact's masks the lot, looked funny to see all the feet. We saw all the papers used in the libraries of Minas Tirith during the shadow of the past scene in FOTR.. Hobbiton Mill looked incredible and really authentic, AMAZING Cave Troll bursting through the door of Balins Tomb with an Orc crawling beside him.. looked great and was huge, and I know you all want to know.. The Boromir mannequin.. Amazing, I was in awe.. it was stunning, cause it just looked SO REAL.. every fine detail on the face, and even the hands looked real, you just half expected him to get up and move or something.. and it was just freaky how good it was. There was also a small hut where the One Ring was suspended in a case in the centre, we hear the voices of people all around e.g "My Precious" by Gollum and Bilbo and "Its mine, my own" by Frodo (in TTT) there was a nice effect around the edge showing fire and there was also really cool lettering off the ring moving around the room on the walls and floor like being given off from a projector. Now there was more but like I said its so hard to remember it all because it was an incredible experience. Theres also information and different videos(unseen footage) spread around the thing aswell as photos in cases, originals by Howe and Lee of Rivendell etc. There was one video that was funny about Laurence Makorae becoming Lurtz and he fell asleep during the make up being put on and the make up artists just laughed at him, carried on though while he was asleep. There is lots to buy as a memoire of the experience too, like I said I got Gandalf the Grey.. Now.. IF YOU READ THIS... GO AND EXPERIENCE IT DAMMIT!!!!(Except Moose who already has) IT RULES

There we go Adt, details ;)
