Finally it's released, and I'll get it soon!

For all you who do have it, I have some questions...

Can we own a ship in the game? And if so, can we fly it? It would be cool to do that, and would be very realistic. If ships are in the game, do we get to move around in them? I.e: Will we get to explore the interior of a starship while it is flying?

Similarly, while taking shuttles across planets, will we be faced with a very bland "LOADING" screen, or will we be put inside the shuttle itself, and get to walk back and forth?

Personal ships will be added in an expansion.

Yeah theres quite a few things being added with the first expansion. It seemed to me like they just thought they should make sure to get it out on time. So they just held some stuff back and are having a big add-on with the exp. Well I can wait.

Me too. Star Wars just isn't the same without cool hovercars and epic space battles.

Yeah. But can you afford the monthly fee you have to pay for the crappy version until the expansion is released?

It seems absurd that you end up spending something like £160 for a game over a year it may be good but it cant be that good...

I assumed he meant that he'll wait until after the expansion is released before he buys it...

I've never played SWG, but I have played several other MMORPG's that have a monthly fee, and I've never had a problem with paying them. Everquest, a very popular MMOG, which started around 1999, broke even last summer. Without the monthly fees, the games wouldn't work out, mainly due to server maintenance and bandwidth costs. You'd really have to play an MMORPG to understand what makes them different from normal games.

Are they the same as the arcade kind?

Anyone know if the game's planets are scaled to real world size? As in are the SW locales roughly the same size as what you would expect the places to be if they were real, or is everything minaturized so that you can literally go from Obi-Wans hut to Skywalker farm, and from farm to town in just five minutes?

Fanible

The reason they can charge a monthly fee for an MMORPG is mainly because people WILL pay it. The game keeps you hooked (most do anyway). You'll be playing it A LOT. They're much different than other games, and they require a ton of game time, more than any other game.

In order to keep such massive worlds stable and well worth the time as well, is they have a crew that do nothing but work on updates, patches, fixes and expansions for the game. Meaning you have a game thats constantly being upgraded and controlled.

The games are massive, and anyone who has the time to play them knows its worth the money to pay for them. They indulge you into their depthness extremely, and you won't want to stop playing. It wouldn't be worth the money only if you couldn't give enough gameplay time to it. And honestly 10-15 dollars isn't that big a deal for me.

And no, I don't think SWG is crappy at the moment, it just doesn't have everything I want currently. Which mainly is being able to freespace fly from planet to planet and around in space to have actual space wars and whatnot. Right now it's basicly a mix of Ultima Online, Everquest, and Dark Age of Camelot. They've done a great job mixing the best elements of the best current MMORPG's.

Once the expansion comes out and adds in all the other extra features, they'll just make the game better. But the game isn't not worth playing just cause you don't have those at the moment.

I will say though, that while it's fun, my gametime will be over and my account will be sold once World of Warcraft is released. That MMORPG looks badass (plus I don't like paying and playing multiple MMORPG's at a time). Thats also one beauty of MMORPG's, is that once you're done playing, if you actually put some time into it, you'll have an account worth selling, and you'll get quite a bit of money back from what you spent on it, maybe even more so.

The planets are pretty well in scale to the movie I suppose. We don't really know how big the planets are, and planets can be as big as the designers want to make them. But yes it'll take you a long time if you walk from city to city on a planet. You'd best take shuttles or something. However when taking shuttles its not going to have you sit and just wait for a certain period of time until it reaches. If running or walking, it'd take a realistic amount of time, but shuttles get you there instantly.

I mean, realism is good and all, but you don't want to bore the players. MMORPG's take enough patience as it is.

Alexander JL

Realism... hmmm... What I hope though, is that when Space Travel (or whatever they will call it) expansion pack is released, we can leave the ship on autopilot and just wander around the interiors of the ship (a la Luke and the gang in A New Hope). Or better yet, be able to bring passengers who can wander around the ship and use it like a travelling house... a flying trailer if you will. lol

Hmm you mentioned realism... So tell me, is Luke's farm and Obi Wan's hut REALLY obvious and stand out when you explore the game? Or do you have to hunt through several hundred similar looking structures before you find them? In other words, are they realistically placed?

Fanible
07-14-2003, 09:58 AM
As I havn't explored Luke's home planet, I have no clue. Im not sure they have a spot that they have titled Luke's home. It doesn't really have anything to do with the game, and it really wouldn't ever. There's probably just several similiar type homes. The only thing you're going to find replicas of really is the cities, which they've done a fairly good job. Naboo is pretty cool.

Anyways, I think the space battles will be just like a freespace game. People have always wanted freespace games where you are on a ship as well, but that requires a whole different design, and the purpose is pretty pointless as you wouldn't do anything. When you pilot your own ship, chances are you'll either fly to fairly near locations for battles in the regions or stations or something, but then when you wanto really get somewhere, you have light speed. The need for autopilot won't really have a need. And as interesting as putting your ship on autopilot and exploring the interior and talking to your mates would be, it'd have no point at all.

But hey, atleast you can still hang out in the bars and dance like a fairy. ;)

Alexander JL
07-14-2003, 10:40 AM
I guess I can see your point, but at least let us walk around the inside of the ship accessible while docked so we can use it as a storage room... That would be cool. Oh well...

Btw Fannible, hope this helps...

Does anyone know if the 'camera' in Star Wars Galaxies is fixed and constant? (like in most 3rd person PC games), or if it is floating (like in most Xbox games, where mouse controls the camera)?

Fanible
07-17-2003, 09:59 AM
It's sorta constant, but yeah the mouse controls the camera. You have a cursor that the mouse controls and you follow it depending on where you point it. I dunno, you'd have to check it out.

Is this from Galaxies? I know you can be a dancer, but damn.

Fanible
07-17-2003, 03:32 PM
Ok, yeah you can actually dance like that. That music was added in though.

But yeah, the dancing is pretty hilarious in the game. The only music ive come across that you can dance to is music that a musician is playing, and you don't even really dance exactly on beat like that. You could start dancing without music and it would still be the same beat really.

That menu is from Galaxies though, and thats a wookie. He just started his guy dancing that way, and played the music in the backround.

JAE

Thats hysterical. How do you dance? How do you perform those different moves, there was a bunch of them.

Alexander JL
07-18-2003, 12:38 PM
I believe you type it down. This game seems more like a giant chatroom compared to other mmorpgs... Rather than point and click, you type "/dance" to dance... Or so I've gathered from what I've seen.

Fanible
07-18-2003, 12:47 PM
There's also a menu drop that tells you all the actions you're capable of doing by typing it in. Theres hundreds.

Doing different dances or doing something other than the crazy one you start out with, requires you to learn entertainer/dancer.

Also, once you start dancing, like the dance you saw in that video, it's automatic the moves. It just goes from step to step.

I find that it's worth the money. You have to enjoy it enough that it's going to keep you playing it constantly for a long time. And most MMORPG's have you do just that. Most your gametime will be taken up by it, and since theres so much to do, it'll be worth it usually.

All it comes down to is if it meets your taste. Theres tons of MMORPG's to choose from. But ive found that most of the ones ive played have kept me playing them for a very long time, which is why I only play one at a time. I can't play more than one, each game takes way too much dedication.

Anyways, for you Alexander, I don't currently own any droids, but yes you can own them. As for their personality traits, I have no clue. I don't think they talk a lot like C3PO. They're just guide bots kinda. But like I said, I don't have one, so I can't really say.

I do own a scout bot droid though, like the ones that landed in Empire Strikes Back in the beginning. You can store stuff in it and it can help fight with you.

All I know is that I want to become a Jedi, and NOW! Obviously only veterans who will have played constantly for a year or two will become Jedi's. No one knows how or even if you can at the moment.

No strategy guide will tell you. Everyone is wondering, but no one knows how, and who knows when we'll know.

I like that becoming a Jedi is nearly impossible, since there weren't any Jedi's running about in the OT except for Luke, Obi-Wan, and Yoda.

But I think its mostly chance that will unlock it.

The Devs have predicted that the first Force Sensitive Slot will be activated within the next 2 months. Their initial prediction was 6 months before a Force user would appear in game. This leads me to believe that the current system is TOTAL experience points based. They've also said that none of the current in game characters will ever become Jedi. Once the FSS is activated the player will be informed that they now have the ability to create an additional Force character. Which means starting all over from scratch. They freely admit that Jedi will be the most powerful characters but also make it perfectly clear how difficult playing a Jedi or learner will be. Due to the fact that Force users are aggressively hunted in this time frame. Jedi unlike other character have only a certain number of allowed kills before perma-death, those who make it to level of Jedi Master and who are some how killed will be granted access as a blue glowy like Obi-wan, but that's it. All Force users must become at least Jedi Knight before the Darkside route is available to them. All in all it sounds interesting and challenging. I'm looking forward to the first in game lightsabre battle.

Other characters other than Jedi can suffer permadeath?

Tenafly Viper
08-01-2003, 06:45 AM
No, any other character that is killed will reclone at the nearest Cloning Center. If a character has stored clone data available no HAM (Health, Action, Mind meters) damage will assessed to the new clone. Also if a character has paid for item insurance all their weapons, tool, clothing etc. will be available at reclone, if not the character must corpse run to retrieve the lost items.
Only the Jedi die permanently. I've heard it said that the only thing that could match the title of Jedi Master in prestige would be the character that can say they've killed one.

No. It auto-insures everytime you die, just as long as you can pay for it. It costs something to insure I think, and then it costs something when you get the item back. It should still be insured after you get it back.

Alex I agree I'm maxed out in RAM and still some of the planets sub-servers are horrible in terms of lag.....Especially Tantooine, this problem with lag is something new. I first noticed it about a week ago, but now it has gotten worse. I hope SOE fixes it soon. Until that happens I’m sticking to the less populated planets, which seem to be lag free at the moment.

I've actually had very few problems with lag. I'm on the Scylla server, and the only problem I consistently have has to with trees and other objects loading too late. A forest just appears around me. I am running on a gig of RAM, though.

How about Agro spawning Oj? Do they just suddenly pop up around you? I haven't experienced this problem myself but a few people that I know in game have complained about this.

It's happened once or twice, but I can usually out run them if I'm unable to defeat them.

I really like how they are handling Jedi. It makes it much truer to the story. If anyone could be a Jedi, EVERYONE would be a jedi. And that would suck.

I agree...........

I found out today that there will only be between 5 & 12 sets of Player assessable Mandalorian Armor per server and they'll be restricted to the Bounty Hunter Class. Which is cool, this way ArmorSmith' won't be able too mass produce them. It would be stupid if there were 1000 Boba Fett looking players in the game.

I've had this problem myself... Usually I'm out walking, and all of a sudden reds pop up right behind me on the radar...

Evil npcs also love spawning near my house for some reason...

I found this post on another message board, and I thought it was a pretty cool idea...

How about this for an Expansion Pack idea?

An Expansion Pack set somewhere in Episode I or II (or in between), where Jedis ruled, and the galaxies were much more intense and heated than the OT?

An Expansion Pack where you could choose Jedi as a starting profession since there already were hundreds (thousands perhaps) of Jedis running about the galaxies. Or if your tastes preferred, you could fall to the dark side...

An Expansion Pack where pod races were a reality (and racing could be a profession), and where you could get into pitched battles where hundreds of droids, gungans, clones, and Jedi fought side by side...

And maybe, having underwater exploration on Naboo which would use the same system that space travel uses so that not much invention (except graphics) would be required by the DEVs.

Wouldn't that be cool? How about that for an idea, devs?

Of course, characters on the OT servers would naturally be untransferrable, but it would be awesome to have all new servers for an expansion pack along those lines... What do you guys think?

I know that Pod Racing is definitely one of the coming expansions. It will probably be part of the whole space expansion.

I'd also like to see a planet like Hoth in game.

How many hours each day are you guys playing this game? I've got limited time, but would love to play...I just don't want to waste the money though and have my character be too weak since I won't be able to play hours every day like the hardcore gamers.

Not alot....
The way the game is set up if you're a non-faction noob you can't be outright attacked by other player characters. They can only challenge you to duel, which you can decline. Once you choose a faction, which is optional, you can be either an overt or covert rebel/imperial. The game also recognizes a players level and adjusts missions accordingly. That's not saying the game is easy, but you won't be a target for the more hardcore players.

Apparently once player run towns are introduced, everyone will be attackable when you enter any player run town by their appointed militia... That's a good, and a very bad thing...

How much can you control about your player. Weight, Height, Facial features, stuff like that. I don't know why but i enjoy that part of the game. Designing the player.

Height, eyes (color and size), skin/fur tone, jaw size, mouth size, nose size, ear size, breast size (females only, it's called "torso"), tentacles (for Twi'leks), etc. There's probably more.

I pllyed Everquest for almost a year, and Dark Age Of Camelot about 3 months, and I have to say that Star Wars Galaxies blows them both away. Where the other games tended to get a bit repetitive at times (hunt, camp, kill, craft, level, repeat), this game just has sooooo much you can do. I love the idea that I can train in almost anything and everything (so many character personality possibilities), and the fact that any action you take makes you stronger in a variety of different traits, rather than the common level advance. The game is not without its flaws. Evenwith the powered up gaming PC I'm constantly upgrading, and my cable modem, the game still has a lot of lag, which I'm sure they will clean up eventually. Also, its way too easy to earn credits, and some of the missions are too easy. They definitly need to bump the difficulty factor. Its a very immersive environment, and the community are really spirited and supportive. I'm very picky about games, but this would get 5 out of 5 stars, hands down. By the way, I play on Tarniqas. My character is Riithy Vaanak.
