IMO, "The Two Towers" had some unbelievably bad CGI shots.

In no particular order:

- Jurassic Park (the original from 1993, it still impresses me how real these dinosaurs actually look)
- The Matrix
- Hero
- Armageddon
- Any Star Wars movie

Althought the last 2 star wars movies were nowhere near as good as the originals. I'd say Episode 1 and 2

Jurassic Park still holds up.

The Fellowship of the Ring was near perfect, TTT was slightly worse but still incredible.

The two Star Wars flicks were great, with a few flaws.

HULK was great with only one scene that looked bad.

And A.I. artificial Intelligence, looked absolutley wonderful IMHO. FX were used pretty sparsely but with great effect.

LOTR: The Two Towers
Juassic Park 1 & 3
LOTR: FOTR
Titanic
Gladiator

The last 2 Star Wars films have been really poor IMO, more like animated features there's that much CGI, and not even well blended.

I would agree with that usually, but Yes it had some of the Greatest effects ever back in the 90's but now we have better effects, they still stand the test of time very well though.

Citizen Kane

Many of Hitchcock's films had great special effects, especially with the way he manipulated the cinematography.

Spidey?

This list is bogus unless you gauge the relative time they came out. Otherwise with every new movie anotherone gets wipped out.

Jurassic Park, might be the best for it's time?

Maybe T2?

Maybe The Matrix?

Maybe Blade I ?

Maybe Spawn?

Maybe Ghost Busters?

Jurassic Park and Lord Of The Rings made my jaw drop when I first saw them. I was also surprised with The Fifth Element and The Terminator movies

Just to throw a question in the mix, by effects are we talking big explosions action sequences, etc... Because there are many other movies that use effects that are so outstanding that you dont even think of them to discuss.

For example, in the Truman Show, none of the buildings they made for the sets had more than a one-story facade. Yet in the movies many were multi-story buildings. So, those effects were so good, that no one knew they were even effects.

If for action type, then definately: Jurrasic Park, The Matrix, Terminator 2, Hollow Man, ID4. Recently I watched Dinasour, the Disney flick, those visuals were great, the combination of live action and animation was done perfectly.

I thought of another one ..........''What Dreams May Come'' had the most beautiful visuals/special effects.

It seems obvious that if you want some effects that will look good for years to come, go with Stan Winston.

He created the effects for Terminator 2 and Jurrasic Park.... both of which look plenty good still today. It's not like watching Star Wars Episode 1 and you're like "wtf". You can still watch T-2 and Jurrasic Park today and not even think about the effects looking bad or anything.... it's been so many years since they're release, and they still look perfectly fine.

This is mainly because he knows when to use CGI, and when not to. He still used makeup, and still does when needed.

Other films hes done is Aliens, Predator, A.I.(I can't believe it didn't win an award), Instinct, Galaxy Quest, Pearl Harbor, all of which still have some of the best makeup and digital effects today.

Don't get me wrong, he's done a TON of stuff some people probably don't even realise he did, and some isn't that great, mainly due to the film and what it's about. But for the most part, I'd say he is one of the best effects artists of our time.

But yeah other films I will include. Matrix Reloaded, Lord of the Rings Two Towers, Star Wars Episode 2.

The only problem with these, just like Star Wars Episode 1, is that in 3-5 years time we will go back and see them and they won't look nearly as impressive as the first time we saw them. That's not an accomplishment to me.... it is for that year, but it usually starts looking hoaky quick (the cgi characters) after more movies come out and the effects are driven even further to look even more realistic.

Without a doubt Episode 3 is going to look even more realistic than Episode 2.... and when it does hit, you'll go back and watch Episode 2 and you'll think "wtf". =P

T3: Rise of the Machines
Titanic
The Two Towers

When I fisrt saw spiderman in theaters I thought the special FX were awesome, but now whenever I watch spiderman I notice that some of the FX look really bad.
I just got Jurassic Park on DVD and that looks awesome. The FX are really good.

AI: Artificial Intelligence is the top so far.
The ending aside, you couldent really tell what was CGI and what wasen't.

All of you are pointing out movies with the most special effects, wasent the topic about "The Movie with the Best Special Efects so Far?" Star Wars 1 and 2's cgi was poor, it look cartoonish, and many moments in LOTR that the cgi looked poor, maybe its just because so much CGI, you expect everything to be CGI.

I can't belive some of you say Spider-Man has the best special effects, they sucked! If you say Spider-Man 2, then its closer.

ROTK - Come on! Awesome SFX!!!
Star Wars Ep. 4-6
The Matrix

Good ones this year:
- I, Robot (I thought its futuristic world was pretty cool because it integrated so many familiar and, frankly, old buildings and objects into their definition of modern...good use of SFX)
- Spider-Man 2 (I love the shots of him flying through NYC...really fantastic.)
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (The shots of the flowers freezing as the dementors flew over them are still incredible, viewing after viewing.)
- Shrek 2 (Obviously...)

i'd have to say,
Lotr: rotk
Lotr: ttt
Star Wars: attack of the clones
T-2- the first use of CGI on the big screen

Sora Kahn

Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Star Wars Original Trilogy had some great special effects. But I think the movie with the best special effects has to be Jason And The Argonauts. The effects with Talos and the skeleton warriors were absolutely incredible.

IMO I-robot is up there with the best SFX movies. Except for a few shots with mass robots the effects for Sonny were practically seamless. I was floored, the effects were so good that it didn't really hit me till after the movie when I fully realized man Holy crap, that was all CG.

Dr.Zoidberg

tough one but i would say...

Blackhawk Down (the cg was so well done imo that u dont even notice its there)

Nightmare before christmas (gotta respect the fact that each shot would take months to pose)

The Matrix (it developed a whole new way to shoot action shots)

and of course Lord of the Rings triolgy, all the starwars all had great fx aswell

Lord of the Rings Trilogy (greatest movies ever)

Jurassic Park (still looks as good as it did the first I saw it in 93)

The Wizard of Oz ( Hay, for 1939 they were great effects and still hold up today).
