View Full Version : The Passion with Mel Gibson
Johnny's Apples

I wanted to get some others views on this upcoming movie with Mel Gibson. If you haven't heard about the film yet, it's about the last 12 hours of Jesus Christ's life on earth and has so far been slammed by the Anti-Defamation league and the US Conference of Catholic Bishops who later recanted their disapproval. The criticism is that it negatively portraits Jews and Catholics (even though Catholics weren't around back then so I have no idea why they would say that). There was a supposed early script that was released which people read and got upset about but the script turned out to be false but the film is still drawing criticism from many groups. What are your opinions, or have you heard anything positive or negative. I would like to discuss this film as I think the film and the attention it is getting are both very interesting. Share your thoughts please and for more info. check out a few of the links I found.

Generally I find that most people on this message board enjoy being opinionated so I am curious as to why there was no response to this post. Surely there must be some strong regarding a movie about the last hours of Christ's life. Come one people, a little feedback, or any thoughts would be nice.

well, obviousy I haven't seen it yet...my question is why did he have to go and use European/american actors? especially since its in latin/hebrew/aramaic...he should have used native actors and actresses

I won't be seeing this if they don't subtitle it. I have read the bible many times, and I know the story, but if it is in another language, with no subtitles, I won't be able to sit through it. I have nothing against foriegn movies. I love a good subtitled movie, and doing this film in Christ's actual language is one of the coolest ideas I've ever heard. But without subtitles, I won't be able to take it.

I agree with Kris Hodgson. I've read and heard the story of Christ's life many times, but to sit and watch the whole film with no subtitles would sort of complicate things.
I have heard that the film is very accurate in its perception of Christ's life. I read a review of the trailer that says the trailer goes so far as to show a nail being placed on Christ's hand and just as the hammer is going to hit the nail, the trailer ends. That actually gives me chills thinking about it.

I think I read that same review, and yeah, it does sound awesome. But I need subtitles consarnit!

It sounds great. And it looks like it'll be visually stunning. I don't really mind the subtitle situation, it'd be nice if they were included, but I guess we all know the story already. The decision is very daring.

very interesting idea, but they need subtitles
also, the name of the thread is not really like the thread itself

Hmm, I would rather it not have any subtitles at all, just to see if they could pull it off. I think it would be amazing if they did.

Heh. If the film were only targeted towards those who speak Aramaic ( the language Yahshua probably spoke ), it wouldn't make much money. Common sense dictates that it will have subtitles.

Not exactly. This film is not truly directed at only those who speak Aramic, this film is an experimental one. If successful, we'll have a modern day silent movie. That is to say, a movie in which our emotions and reactions are dictated not by the dialogue (since we won't understand it), but rather their actions.
Erm, will Mel be playing Christ? That would be good for a laugh.

As far as I know Mel isn't playing Jesus in this film.
As for the subtitiles, I assume God speaks all languages so it doesn't bother me that they will speak english in this film. Some subtitles may be appropriate, but few people actually speak Aramaic anymore so I doubt that making certain scenes would truly be that authentic using slang and verbage as they did back then with the language anyways.
I think this looks like an interesting film and I plan on seeing it. Who else plans on seeing it?

Supposedly this is suppose to really prove Mel Gibson's directing ability. If he really is able to make a movie with no subtitles and in a different language, but still have everyone enjoy it, that is an amazing accomplishment. I don't know really how he'd pull it off, but he seems to think it'll work.
Come towards the end of filming and watching it, they may end up putting subtitles if it comes down to it.

I didn't know that the film wasn't going to be in English at all, thanks for the heads up. So let me get this straight though, they are making the film in probably a mix between some Aramaic and Hebrew and they aren't going to release it with subtitles? I don't understand why they would do that? Are you sure that's what the plan is?

For those of you that don't bother, it says that some Christian groups who have viewed it say there were subtitles. I guess Mel decided to do it.
I guess thats not a bad thing. It makes sense actually. Mainly because people would only like it IF they knew the story well. Otherwise people who don't wont have any clue whats going on, especially since how much strong dialogue is suppose to go on durring the remaining days of Jesus (and this is the last 12 hours).

I don't think subtitles have anything to do with selling out. I think it has to do more with common sense. Why does it ruin the movie to add subtitles? I for one am happy that they did.

I just read that there are subtitles in the film, but there are some viewers who are complaining about there being too many subtitles while others are applauding the "overuse" of them.
Either way, this film is going to be a must see.

I saw on the news that Jim Caviezel said he wouldn't be suprised if people walked out on this movie because it's kinda disturbing. I think it's probably going to be pretty sad, but I really want to see it anyway.

Mel Gibson has said a March or April release date. But there's been rumors it may come out by February. Depends on what studio signs on and what they want to do as well.

I believe that this project of Mel's is showing his gradual degredation into insanity. Much like Charlton Heston and The Ten Commandments.
