View Full Version : Canadian Idol!

Okay, here is a thread for us canadians to talk about our show.
Let's all root for this guy, since one of us knows him!

http://www.ctv.ca/generic/WebSpecials/Shows/CanadianIdol/images/comp/WIN-joel.jpg

NAME: Joel

AGE: 18

HOMETOWN: Morden, MB

OCCUPATION: Student

IDOLS: Billy Corgan, Tom Cruise

HOW HAS MAKING THE TOP 100 IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?: I've worked hard at my music for years, and it feels good that others also see the potential I have as a singer and a songwriter.

Recap from show:
Joel then gets a stunning reversal as the judges turn four negatives into positives. What appeared to happen is that once Jake suggested that he'd have no problem signing Joel as a singer/songwriter, the rest decided that was probably good enough to move him on.

The show has been hilarious so far, but something puzzled me last week.

The last performer - was she handicapped or something?

I thought she was awesome but the combination of her movements, facial expressions, and all the judges reactions, crying and such, made me think that maybe something was wrong?

Anyone?

Kris Hodgson
06-18-2003, 10:05 AM
The one that wrote her own song? She kept on trying to sing after they told her no?
She did seem like something was wrong with her, but I don't think she was handicapped. Just kind of weird. I was glad she didn't get picked, because it showed her earlier trying to teach someone how to sing, and she seemed so cocky and conceited that she would get in.

Sparhawk
06-18-2003, 10:30 AM
No not that chick - she was messed!!! I thought she'd never leave.

The very last girl - dark brown, curly hair, really funky top.

When she was done Zack left 'cause he was crying, Sass was crying and Farley followed her out of the room and kept hugging her.

Kris Hodgson
06-18-2003, 10:34 AM
Oh yeah, I left the room, and when I got back everyone was crying. I didn't hear her sing, so it was weird. I'm not sure.

Jarbacca
06-18-2003, 03:29 PM
i think she was handicaped or had something else wrong with her

Kris Hodgson
06-18-2003, 03:32 PM
Why was everyone crying? Because it was so good, or because she tried so hard, or what?

Sorry I can't cheer for anyone. I hate all these crap shows.

Sparhawk
06-18-2003, 03:59 PM
Thats the question?!?

I didn't hear them mention a handicap but she was moving in a weird way and making weird faces. Coulda been her being "artisitc" though.

She was quite good. But not tear-worthy, to my way of thinking.

I think it was because she was so good and sang such a moving song. I thought Sass was laughing at her at first. But maybe she was just amazed.

I like this show! I didn't think I would, but I do. And god, that Calgary blizzard was the weekend we were supposed to move back to Edmonton, but we got stranded in our house! No way could we make it on highway 2. God, that brought back memories.:)

Yeah, the judges are:

Sass Jordan

Sass Jordan = Washed up, needs the work
Guy who thinks he's Simon = Bully wnna but is really a nerd at heart who is also talentless
Token black guy because they someone who knows something about hip hop/R&B
Token Gay Guy because most male competitors are gay feel more confortable.

and
Another spoiled kid riding the coat tails of his famous daddy.

Pretty much the same line up as every other candian TV show only usually with one of the ugly chicks of Air Farce replacing sass jordan:funny:

Mr. TV

just a bad show. the judges are like ripoffs of the american idol. the singers are bad and not much talent seems to be there. the singers are no where close to their american counterparts. the only thing i like is the fact that i know someone who made the second round. ahh the show is like all the other crap canadian shows that involve crappy canadian hopeful singers. dare i say sugar jones, velvet empire and any other crap winners that won their respective shows?
ps. where are those groups/singers now?

Jarbacca
06-19-2003, 12:52 AM
what i don't get is how come every other countries "american idol" type show (yes i know AI was not the first, but i'll just label the shows as AI to make it clear) is kind of unique

all CTV did was change american to canadain and get a new host an judges, they riped off the opening song, the opening credits, and all the judges aree exactly like simon, randy and paula

CTV could have thought up ways to make this a true canaduan idol, and not the america idol rip off it is

It's too bad they couldn't get a real panel of judges, not washouts.

They should have gotten:

Brian Adams
Sarah McLaughlin
David Foster

Three judges would do the trick.

Actually, Jann Arden WAS a judge on the first episode. But I guess it was a one time thing.

06-24-2003, 10:18 AM
So, did you see anyone you knew, Jarbacca?

Jarbacca
06-24-2003, 10:32 AM
no, i was hoping i would but i didn't someone i knew might have auditioned but they just didn't show them

there was too much crying last night, with the wheel chair girl and the chubby one, it was like a Crying fest (well at least for the gay jugde)

Kris Hodgson
06-24-2003, 10:35 AM
Yeah, there's way more emotion on this one than on American Idol. There was over 9000 people waiting to audition in Toronto, so I would have been surprised if you knew someone there. There would have been thousands that they didn't even show.

Jarbacca
06-24-2003, 10:42 AM
they should have made a Toronto only ep, like you said there were so many people show up to audition, yet it didn't really feel like they showed that much

Kris Hodgson
06-24-2003, 10:46 AM
Yeah, there was as many people at the Toronto Auditions as all of the other cities combined.

Jarbacca
06-24-2003, 12:48 PM
right, it probably could have just been "Toronto Idol"

Kris Hodgson
06-24-2003, 01:16 PM
Bah! All of Canada is needed. I betcha it isn't a torontonian that wins.

Jarbacca
06-24-2003, 01:59 PM
yeah your probably right, i bet it will be someone from the west

Laterose
06-26-2003, 09:07 AM
probably

Kris Hodgson
06-26-2003, 09:45 AM
For a Toronto person to make it to the top 100, they would have to be AWSOME, because they didn't take that many to the top 100, and thousands tryed out.

Sparhawk
06-26-2003, 10:01 AM
I thought it was odd that more Torontonians weren't chosen. It may just be in response to the growing amount of anti-Toronto sentiment in the rest of the country.

I didn't see the first couple of shows of American Idol so I can't compare, but was there the same amount of "special needs" people trying out. Jeeze - it's like they're trying to make Canadian Idol look like the Special Olympics.

Jarbacca
06-26-2003, 10:45 AM
no, not that we saw, but then again i doubt FOX would want to show

Kris Hodgson
06-26-2003, 11:50 AM
Just checked the website. I was wrong. It's down to 143 finalists, not 100. And they cut it down to 30 next week! That's alot of cuts.

Sparhawk
06-26-2003, 12:01 PM
I don't think they'll have too hard a time cutting to that.

There were some really awesome singers, but they seemed to pick a lot of dead wood as well.

Laterose
06-26-2003, 01:00 PM
All I can say is that the Americans had a lot of REALLY REALLY bad singers and we weren't as bad.

Jarbacca
06-26-2003, 03:26 PM

Hey Kris, sorry about your cousin. Man, that must have crushed him - he choked huge.

Poor dude - he was a decent singer too.

Kris Hodgson
07-03-2003, 08:18 AM
Yeah, I don't know why he choked so bad. He's been performing in front of large audiences since he was 10 years old! So I definetly didn't think he'd be so nervous. But it happens I guess. He's definetly happy to have made it to the final 143. Thousands of people auditioned, so it is still an accomplishment!

Sparhawk
07-03-2003, 09:03 AM

I just read your guys convo on the Canada Day thread - Deja Vu much?

Anywho - I actually watched Ben Mulroney's retardo show the other night and Farley Flex was on talking about Wildcards and the conversation seemed to imply that they had already used them.

I've seen every show and that was the first time I'd heard a wildcard mentioned at all. I dunno whats up either.

07-08-2003, 07:23 AM
Mikey Bucos? He was pretty good last night. Not as good as his first song but still good. I hope he and that dude from Calgary, with the white hair, advance.

Did anyone else call in and vote?

Kris Hodgson
07-08-2003, 08:14 AM
I voted for Candida. The girl that went last and sang "I will always love you". She hit every note. Gave me shivers. The weird thing is, I voted 3 times!?!?!?! I thought they blocked your number after you voted once.

Sparhawk
07-08-2003, 09:15 AM
I dunno if they will block repeat votes later. My wife and I figured that maybe they weren't sure if Canadians would vote as much as the Americans did,so they allowed it for now.

We thought Candida was pretty good too, but that Calgary guy is my fav so far.

Well looks like you guys picked #1, but I picked 2 & 3. Mikey Bucos and Bill Clipperd (formerly referred to as "the Calgary guy").

It seemed kinda weird to me that they had so many strong singers lumped together in the first round. Next weeks group looks like much lighter fare.

If I had picked the three, I would have picked Candida, Calgary Guy, and the girl who sang "Love will lead you back."

Why: the girl had a wonderful voice, while the annoying Mikey had none. No emotion, it sounded like he was singing the phone book. Awful, awful CRAP

Sparhawk
07-09-2003, 08:33 AM
I really liked Mikey's first song - his second was OK IMO, but I think it will be interesting to see if he can sing something different.

Both songs he's done have been kinda tailored to his style.

His weepiness is getting kinda annoying though.

Wow! Talk about contrast. If last night's group had've combined with the first group and they had to pick 6 people - I think they would have all been from the first group. Other then Tyler.

I didn't really like anyone from last night, other than Tyler.

How they are gonna pick three is beyond me.

Kris Hodgson
07-15-2003, 08:25 AM
Yeah, last night sucked. I voted for Marc Devigne. The song he sang was my favorite, and the other guy that sang it sounded too country for my liking. He is also from Manitoba so that was the tiebreaker for my vote. We need at least one Manitoban in the final!

Sparhawk
07-15-2003, 08:55 AM
Which one was Marc?

Laterose
07-15-2003, 08:57 AM
I don't know, but I think the last three were my favourites. The other guy who sang "Don't let the sun go down on me" wasn't too bad either, though.

I think I voted for Jeanie...or whatever her name is

Kris Hodgson
07-15-2003, 09:03 AM
Marc was the first guy to sing "Don't let the sun go down on me" The girl who sang Tower of Song had a great voice, but that was totally the WRONG song to sing.

Laterose
07-15-2003, 09:04 AM
Agreed. I just voted for her because I thought she could sing better than that.

Yeah, I almost voted for her too, just because I know she can sing better.

Laterose

Sparhawk
07-16-2003, 07:22 AM
Well, that Marc dude came in fourth, but I can't believe that Jennie(or whatever) advanced.

What is her deal? Kris, she's the one I was talking about @ the beginning of this thread.

Kris Hodgson
07-16-2003, 08:33 AM
She did have a good voice though. Just a REALLY crappy song pick. So she may do really well. I can't believe that weird guy (Ritchie?) beat out Marc for the 3rd spot. He's going to be the first one booted out of the top 10.
I'm looking forward to the wildcard show in 2 weeks! I wonder who they are going to bring back?

Sparhawk
07-16-2003, 08:43 AM
Where do they "draw" the wildcard from?

Is anyone up for grabs, the top 30, top 134?

Kris Hodgson
07-16-2003, 08:49 AM
That's what I'm not sure about. They put such an emphasis on Joel when he got sent home. They showed him constantly throughout the whole episode, I was hoping maybe that they would bring him back. His parents haven't said anything about it, but even if they knew, they wouldn't be allowed to say anything anyway.

I DON'T KNOW!!! He had a unique voice, and not a totally terrible one, but top 10 material. I think not!

Sparhawk
07-16-2003, 09:53 AM
This group was so light on talent. They'll all get smoked going up against the first three.

I thought the fourth guy, Andrew?, from the first show, was better than any of the three they took last night.

Kris Hodgson
07-16-2003, 09:54 AM

Well it's official, IMO. Two of the three from last week have no business being in the final 10. Last night's group was as strong as the first bunch.

Why was group two so weak compared to the other two?

Anywho, we voted for the french chick, the funky St Germann girl, and the last singer - the newlywed. Our dark horse picks were the 2nd black girl(Toni or something) and basketball dude.

Also, GO SHARON!!!!!

Or do they pick a group and whittle it down to the one wildcard person?

Woo Hoo! Two outta three again!

I'll be a judge on the next show.

Figures - no wildcards from the second group - Wotta shock!!!!!

Sparhawk
07-23-2003, 07:49 AM
No offence, Laterose. I didn't think Sharon was all that hot. Do you know her or something?

There's alot of talent in that wildcard group - if I had to pick I'd probably go with that funky St Germann chick.

Laterose

When Sharon auditioned, she was awesome. Even when audtioning for top 30, she was too.

No offense, but I like her better than the St Germann girl. I thought she was on drugs or something when she sang.

Kris Hodgson
07-23-2003, 08:15 AM
Actually there was one wildcard from group 2. Marc Devigne. He was the guy that I voted for in group 2. Yeah, I wish Joel would've got another shot, but it's like you said; he wasn't sick or anything, he just blew it. There's always next year. From all the support he's gotten, I'm sure he'll try again next year. It's been all over the local papers. My grandma has been saving all of the clippings.

Is this show on in the states?

Kris Hodgson
07-28-2003, 11:25 AM
I don't think so. Maybe if you have a satalite dish, but I'm not sure. The wildcard show is tonight and it should be a good one. Manitoba's hopes are down to Marc Devigne. There was one other Manitoban, but she dropped out of the wild card show because she is currently recording an album. St. Germain is her last name. I forget her first.

I actually missed the voting show this time - who advanced.

I would guess either Andrew Leader or Toni/Tanya(the Whitney wannabe).

Kris Hodgson

There was a twist. The 1st and 2nd place were so close that they let both of them through. So now it is the final 11. I can't remember their names though. The guy with the buddy holly glasses and Toya or tonya or something.

Yeah, I just thought of the square glasses, and thought of Buddy Holly. He was one I was hoping would make it through from group 1, so it was cool that he made it through.

Your opinions?

Mine: Mikey and Ritchie were godawful. Gary should have never picked that song. Ryan blew me away and everyone else was very impressing.

Kris Hodgson

My favorites were Audrey and Billy. But I voted for Ryan, because I knew thousands of people would vote for Audrey and Billy.

Jenny should have gotten the boot last night instead of Candida. Jenny sucks. No talent. She doesn't sing, she talks.

Laterose
08-06-2003, 08:45 AM
no, she sounds pretty good, but I agree that Candida shouldn't have been kicked off. It should have been Ritchie, Mikey and Gary

Kris Hodgson

You didn't like Gary? wow, I thought he was good. I am glad Ritchie is gone, and yes I agree that Bustos should be gone too.

I just was disturbed when he sang a Sarah McLachlan song. I've never heard a guy sing "Angel" before. I don't personally have anything against him, he did the top 30 audition with one of my favourite songs, so I actually liked him, though he doesn't really have a chance of winning.

Kris Hodgson
08-06-2003, 09:08 AM
So who are your picks for the top 3? I think it will be Audrey, Billy and Jenny. I don't think Jenny SHOULD be in the top three, but her fan base will get her there.

Laterose
08-06-2003, 09:14 AM
If i had my way it would be:
Audrey, Billy, Tyler

How it most likely will end up:
Audrey, Billy, Mikey

The only other person who could surpise me would be Ryan.

Kris Hodgson
08-06-2003, 09:37 AM
Yeah, I think Ryan MAY have a chance. I hope Mikey doesn't make it to the top three. He just sucks so much. He can't sing more than one style. The only thing I don't like about competitions decided by this kind of voting is the teen girl factor. Teen girls are the majority of voters for these shows. And 9 times out of ten, they vote for the guy that is the "cutest", not the most talented. That basketball player ALMOST made it into the top 11. And he was horrible.

Laterose
08-06-2003, 09:41 AM
This show is fixed sometimes. Personally, I thought Karen-Lee had a fighting chance. She could sing, she had a wonderful personality and she was pretty, almost angelic.

Besdies, Mikey isn't cute. He cries too much

Kris Hodgson
08-06-2003, 09:55 AM
Well obviously I don't think he's cute, but do you know what I mean. I can just picture 13 year old girls, swooning over him while he sings. "OOOO, he's so dreamy". Maybe I'm wrong. I thought Karen-Lee had a great voice, but based on her Black Velvet performance, she deserved to go. It just wasn't good at all. If she had made it past last night, and sang a better song next week, I'm sure she could've made it alot farther.

Sparhawk
08-06-2003, 10:43 AM
The "teen girl factor" .....LOL.

I predict - Billy, Audrey, Mikey.

I would like - Billy, Audrey, Ryan.

I didn't like Ryan initially, but he's really grown on me.

Laterose
08-06-2003, 11:19 AM

Oh man, did Gary stink it up last night!! I kept wondering if they would stop him because of technical difficulties - he must not have been getting clean feedback from the monitors to sing a whole song off key.

Audrey and Toya stole the show last night IMO. Billy was bland but still ok.

Kris Hodgson
08-12-2003, 08:22 AM
Damn, I totally forgot about this! I missed it last night. Are they booting 3 more tonight or only one per show now?

Sparhawk

They said that 2 will go tonight.

I guess they did 3 last week to make up for the extra person they took on.

Laterose
08-12-2003, 09:25 AM
My quick view:
Mikey: 2/10 he sucked
Jenny:6/10
Ryan:7.5/10 he's growing on me
Audrey:8/10 not her best, but good
Tyler:8/10 he truly is Elvis back from the dead
Toya:9/10 bringing down th house baby!
Billy: 8/10 not his best, but I happen to like that song
Gary:3/10 god awful

Sparhawk
08-12-2003, 09:27 AM
Toya bothers me. She is clearly talented - no question - but does she HAVE to emulate Whitney so completely.

And what was up with her outfit last night - she looked like a two-dollar hooker.

Kris Hodgson
08-12-2003, 09:30 AM
So Mikey and Gary should go tonight?

Sparhawk
08-12-2003, 09:34 AM
I'm thinking Gary and Jenny or Tyler.

Mikey's got all the little girls tied up in knots.

The judges are soo in love with Jenny, but I don't get it. They slamed Tyler last night.

Laterose
08-12-2003, 09:35 AM
yeah. I know alot of people didn't like Billy last night because he was singing rock, but it sounded really nice to me. And Tyler is awesome. Elvis lives again :D

Sparhawk
08-13-2003, 07:47 AM
*shakes head* Well, I didn't see that coming..........

Gary and Jenny got more votes than Billy! I was ready to freak if Tyler advanced over Billy.

Did Mikey go throw a fit after he was eliminated? He left and didn't come back.

Kris Hodgson
08-13-2003, 08:16 AM
GODDAMMIT!!! How did I miss it again. I wanted to watch it! So Mikey and Tyler were eliminated?

Sparhawk
08-13-2003, 08:32 AM
Yup! Billy survived being in the bottom three.

Tyler stayed out after the elimination and sang the closing song, but Mikey just disapeared.

Sparhawk
08-19-2003, 07:53 AM
Jeeze - I was kinda disapointed last night. Toya was the best IMO - but it still bugs me that if I close my eyes while she's singing I see Whitney.

Billy and Ryan were good, but they tried too hard. If they had of settled down, just a touch, they would've been great.

Audrey was kinda bland - nice retro outfit though.

Kris Hodgson
08-19-2003, 08:30 AM
I think Audrey was almost the worst of the night, which is too bad, because she is usually so good. I voted for Ryan, even though I thought Gary was the best last night. He really rebounded from last week I guess.

Sparhawk
08-20-2003, 08:04 AM
Well, I guess someone had to go........but I was surprised to see Toya go. She wasn't my fav but her talent was undeniable.

I bet both Jenny and Gary are doing Ben Mulroney.

I'll be amazed/pissed if either advances further than Billy or Audrey.

Kris Hodgson
08-20-2003, 08:27 AM
Jenny needs to go NOW. I hate her so much.

Sparhawk
08-26-2003, 08:42 AM
Please.....please, let Jenny go tonight. Why do the judges love her so much? She butchered that song last night.

Billy rocked, he was easily the best last night IMO. I voted for him about 20 times.

Kris Hodgson
08-26-2003, 08:50 AM
I missed the first 3/4 of last night's show, but Billy kicked so much ass. That performance was amazing. He's my favorite right now.

Sparhawk
08-26-2003, 08:58 AM
Everyone else was so-so.

Audrey looked great, but she had a hard time with the song. Jennie stunk it up, but the judges all swooned. Gary and Ryan were both ok.

I think it's finally time for Gary to go. All four seemed to have rough patches last night, but Gary is the weakest of them IMO.

I agree. I think it should definetly be Billy and Ryan in the final two. I could see Audrey going tonight though. She was really shakey last night.

Sparhawk
09-02-2003, 08:52 AM
To be honest, I've never thought Audrey was an excellent singer. She's a package.

I think her english limits her. She seems to get wraped up in the words rather than singing the song. I'd love to hear her sing in French though.

I agree with you 100%. Gary has potential, he just needs more practice. Some of his notes are really shakey. For the first time, the votes went the way I wanted them to go. Ryan and Billy safe and Audrey going home. Good results show last night.

Arg. I missed last night. What was the theme?

Sparhawk
09-09-2003, 08:33 AM
Each Idol sang two songs. The first song was picked for them by the judges and the second was their own pick.

Sass was gushing like a drunk school-girl all night and Zack wasn't even making sense.

Dione
09-09-2003, 10:21 AM
I hope Gary is chosen tonight too. I just love Ryan and Billy so much, I can't decide who I like more. They're better than any of the American contestants were. Except Clay. They're both at his level.

Sparhawk

Kris Hodgson

This was the biggest injustice in the history of the world. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little but you get my point. Billy had more talent in his goatee than Garry had in his entire body. I can't believe Gary even made it into the top 4! let alone the top 2. I get way too into these shows. As I was watching Gary (after Billy was announced the loser) I just wanted to punch him in the face. He looked so smug.

Anyway.....GO RYAN!!!!

Me too. I couldn't believe how that dumb show actually made me mad.

Did you see Gary's family when eveyone started booing. That made me laugh. It looked like the one chick was gonna grab someone and deck them.

Kris Hodgson
09-10-2003, 04:23 PM
Yeah, that was priceless. I just don't understand how more people could have voted for Gary. Maybe his hometown was rigging it like Audrey's was. Her town set up special phone lines in their town hall (I think) so people could vote for her over and over and over and over again.

Sparhawk
09-16-2003, 06:45 AM
Well, I guess nerves ruled the show last night. I thought they were both off. Not abnormal for Gary, but it was kinda weird to see Ryan struggling.

It kinda made me think, I would have much rather watched a Billy/Toya final that these two. I'll watch tonight, but I don't even, really, care who wins. Gary should've been gone weeks ago.

Sparhawk

I'm so glad Gary didn't win, but when Billy was singing last night, it just pissed me off. How could he not have made the final 2? He was by far the best out of all of them. And did you notice how much Jennie Gear sucked!?!?!?!?! Just goes to show you that if she can't pick the song, she's terrible. How did she make it as far as she did? Still a mystery to me. She tried to sing that Dirty Dancing Song in her talking/singing style. Horrible, completely horrible.

Sparhawk
09-17-2003, 08:30 AM
My wife and I were laughing our asses off while we watched last night. Jennie Gear was so rank! Tyler, Mikey, and Candida? were stinking it up last night too.

I still think a Billy/Toya final would have been better. Sherri can really sing too, eh. I'd forgotten how bad she got robbed.

Kris Hodgson
09-17-2003, 08:34 AM

09-17-2003, 08:41 AM
I dunno. I agree, it's not really my thing either, but I didn't not like it. It was OK. He's a pretty easy guy to listen to.

I didn't like Gary's version of it.
I just never got into the way he'd try to ultra R&B the crap out of every song.

Kris Hodgson
09-17-2003, 08:44 AM

Yay for Ryan! He was the one I wanted to win from the beginning. It would have been much better if Billy were there too, as you guys say. He was amazing. But I'm so happy Gary didn't win. I cheered when Ryan won. I actually got a little choked up when I saw Billy crying last night. And Jenny was terrible. I always thought she was. And I can't stand to watch her sing, she just looks to weird when she does.

So between watching this and the John Ritter tribute on ABC at the same time, I was on an emotional roller coaster last night, from extreme sadness to total happiness.
