View Full Version : Worst Bond film?

Although all the new movies pretty much suck (though ironically Pierce does well), the worst ever bond movie has to be "Never Say Never Again". The whole thing is just a parody of itself. I really didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Well, it's not an official James Bond film, so i wouldn't worry about it too much.

Die Another Day is definetly the worse of Brosnan's Bond films. Live and Let Die I'm not too keen on either.

The main three frontrunners are Die Another Day, A View To A Kill, and Moonraker, in no particular order. All three are near the bottom of the barrel. However, if we're going to through Never Say Never Again into the mix, it certainly takes the cake.

Really? Why's that?

(OMG, i just found out the director was the director of Empire Strikes Back!)

It was made by WB. It had no affiliation with MGM, United Artists, and EON Productions, who have produced all the other Bond films. There was a whole legal battle over the script of Thunderball (if you didn't notice, Never Say Never Again IS Thunderball) that we don't need to get into here. Also, an actual Bond movie, Octopussy, came out the same year, and they never make two real Bond movies in the same year.

I think there are some other threads around here that get into more detail.

Never Say Never Again is a joke. We shouldn't even mention McClory's masterpiece of a Bond film which still confuses people to this day.

Gee, a lot of people that aren't hardcore Bond fans like myself say that Connery's movies were the only good ones. Although he was the first and the best, there have still been many good ones since then. TSWLM and GE really come out as very good post-Connery 007 movies.

And Die Another Day is far and away the worst. MGM tried to make Bond something it's not: a high-tech movie with CGI. Bond films are notorious for having nearly all real stunts. This movie made me sick in all aspects.

It has got to be The Man With the Golden Gun.

Actually I think that was Moore's strongest Bond film.

It was less "cute" than the other ones.

I'd have to go with "View To A Kill" just because Roger Moore looked older than Desmond Llewelyn.

Die another Day for sure. Not only did it have that stupid "invisible" Aston Martin, but it also had the horrendously bad in all movies Halle Berry.

FYEO was bad? I think it was great because of timing. It brought Bond back down to earth (literally) after Moonraker.

I liked Moonraker. The effects were great. Too bad they almost completely left the idea of using models in Die Another Day.

TMWTGG isn't that bad. The movie is almost completely different from the novel.

DAF wasn't too bad, either.

It's still DAD. NSNA was crap, as well. A blackspot on the series.

Bigee04
03-13-2004, 01:43 PM
The effects aren't the problem with Moonraker, its the premise. Bond in space, ridiculous. But the special effects are great for the 70's. I dunno why TMWTGG gets a bad rap, its no worse than any of the other ones. And NSNA isn't a black mark on the series, it isn't a part of the series.

Die Another Day was horrible. It had the most cheesy one liners I have ever heard. (when Hally Berry stabs the bible into that chick-"Read This!"

The worst has got to be Moonraker. What a pathetic comedy/sci-fi/cartoon of a movie. It only used the title of the novel and tried to capitalize on Star Wars' popularity. The Man with the Golden Gun comes in a close second. It's only saving grace is Christopher Lee.

I'd have to say that "Diamonds Are Forever" would be the worst . . .

Agreed. Saw it again not long ago and thought I'd watch it just for Lee, but couldn't. There's not even any story to it.

Again, I stand very alone in the sea of opinion.

Although I, too, was a bit disturbed with some of the CGI use & over-the-top elements (& 'dialogue') in the film, I think the main problem with "DIE ANOTHER DAY" is the ONE thing all movie fans of ALL genres have difficulty accepting: "EVOLUTION"!

"Bond" has ALWAYS changed with the times (even if the character himself is, in a sense, 'timeless'), and the filmmakers have always tried to fit him in with the times -- even if the results are sometimes absurd.

Yes, I wish the franchise would "tone down" a bit, but the franchise has almost from the beginning of the series been "over-the-top" entertainment, focusing on creativity and imagination as well as story.

Surprisingly, it was only the two "MOST EVOLUTIONARY" of the Bond films-- "GOLDENEYE" (end of the 'Cold War'; a woman as the new "M"; Brosnan finally assuming a role he was a natural for) and "DIE ANOTHER DAY" (Bond captured, imprisoned & tortured; Bond revoked of his "00" status then tossed aside by his superiors; new 'seemingly outrageous but not altogether unlikely' high-technology such as the "Vanquish/Vanish" or "DNA Sculpting"; John Cleese taking over the role as the new "Quartermaster" [the retirement of the old "Q" hinted at in the previous film]) --that were the ONLY ONES of the entire "20-episode" run which have managed to find their way into my own personal DVD collection, simply because they were so radical, inventive and, yes, 'evolutionary'!

Nostalgia is a good thing (I learn that more and more the older I get)... but times do change... and a long running franchise like "James Bond, 007" must reasonably change with them.

(Just remember: "Darth Vader" wasn't ALWAYS a 'Sith Lord' and didn't ALWAYS wear a black helmet.)

André

I dont care if it is evolution or not. I still dont like it no matter how much things have to develop to fit into time ;)

Worst Bond: Tie: Diamonds Are Forever & On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Lazenby's terrible...terrible. hippety hop walk, dorky "Bond, James Bond" soundclip...horrid. Good riddance to him..)

Though not a Brocolli Bond, NSNA is good in that you can at least contrast & compare elements with Thunderball, which was in top 5, imo.

I liked View to a Kill... Man w/ Golden Gun sucked, but had some good scenery ...(Macau, Thai coast (though movie said it was China coast)

Pierce was in the best and worst of the Bond series: Goldeneye and Die Another Day.

DAD was one of the few movies where I actually REALLY wanted a refund, because there were absolutely no redeeming features about the movie.

The worst ones were :
Die another Day
and
On her Majesty's Secret Service.

Even though Never say never again was not an official James bond film it was terrible. Sean Connery was definetly the best Bond but this come back was a bad idea.

Her Majesty's Sevret Service is the worst. Tomorrow Never Dies is a close second.

brody27

Definitely Die Another Day. I personally don't think there could be an argument. Moonraker is close behind and A View To A Kill. I think that both Die Another Day and Moonraker started out as pretty good Bond movies and then things began to quickly fall apart. Die Another Day is the best example of this.

szabonaut
10-09-2004, 12:04 AM
Die Another Day was better than I expected (which isn't saying much, since I don't like Brosnan in the role.) The Man with the Golden Gun was the worst.

Other thoughs: Moonraker is a great film! A View to a Kill is also quiite a lot of fun. It's got Christopher Walken, for god's sake! Finally, On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of my favorites. You've got a great story, Diana Rigg, a fabulous Cougar, Telly Savalis, Bond getting married, and classic production values.

I woudl have to agree with stonefaced, easily the worst of the Connery films. Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd...they just scare me. Though it does have one of my favorite lines:

Tiffany: "Oh my God! You just killed James Bond!"

James Bond: "Is that who that was?"

Geez, it took people a long time to mention "On Her Majesty's Secrect Service." That movie was absolutly awful. The cinematography was horrid, the acting was pathetic, the director was worthless, and it was poorly written. At least the cinematography and acting was good in "Die Another Day." There's quite a few James Bond movies I don't like, but OHMSS is the only one that I cannot stand to sit through.
