I know close nothing about this comic but from wht I have seen it looks to be pretty good. Plus i love Ron Pearlman. He's terribly unrated. For him alone I'd go see this one.

Agreed. Ron is one great actor...I don't know if I would have rushed to this film had the director not been a good one though. As much as I love Ron, he's not been in the best of films... Guillermo is a major selling point for me though. I'll see whatever he makes.

Hmm, question about Sammael. Does he have a "breed" or what's his background? Anyone know?

There are demonic 'breeds' but from what Monkeygust has said about Sammael not having the same background as he had in the comic... then I doubt that what I know will help you much.

I believe he's made up. Though, knowing the director, there's probably a made up history to the character written up somewhere.

I've tried not to ask too much about the character since he's one of the highlights of the film... I've already spoiled myself by seeing the characters secret weapons.

Yeah, I knew that part. I was just wondering if anyone knew where his "history" could be found? I couldn't find anything on the hellboy site.

Sammael is not from the comic so, you won't find any help there. There's also not much from the movie site since he's not been discussed much. There is a blurb under the PIPELINE TO PRODUCTION section with some audio commentary on Sammael, but it probably won't shed the light that you're looking for.

IOW, nothing written up publicly. I'll try to find some info for ya though.

Here's what Guillermo had said about Sammael in an early talkback from the hellsite.com message board...

He's the Lord of the Shadows, harbringer of pestilence, seed of destruction and hound of the resurrection. He looks different from the painting but is VERY miognolaesque.

He was referring to the Wayne Barlow Hellboy poster available from Morpheus (www.darkworlds.com). I own two of those suckers, one framed.. Very cool.

Quick update to you folks... Guillermo, the director just announced that the new trailer that was supposed to be shown during Superbowl has been pulled...

They decided to use the money more wisely and will be putting out a FREE 12min promo dvd via the BEST BUY store chain sometime in the next 2 months.

Also, they will soon be giving away free signed versions of the new Hellboy movie poster which was painted by Drew Struzan (he did the Harry Potter, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future posters). So, I suggest you go and sign up at the hellsite.com messageboards to make sure you're elligable.

monkeygust

Also, fan screenings of the film will happen at the earliest, sometime in the end of February, but definately sometime in March.

There are new TV spots that have started airing on US television so, look out for those. Some folks have already seen them on the F/X cable channel.

Knerys

monkeygust

To be fair, the director gave the fans a choice of where to have it and they still ended up deciding to have it in known places.

Most voted NY, Chicago, LA, TX.

heres a little report from sci fi wire

Hellboy Stunt Broke Rib

Ron Perlman, who plays the title role in the upcoming comic adaptation Hellboy, told SCI FI Wire that he injured himself performing one of the film's elaborate stunts. "I broke a rib jumping onto a train that was coming towards me," Perlman said in an interview. "It was going about 45 [mph]."

Perlman admitted that he was a bit surprised that the movie's stunt coordinators allowed him to do the gag himself. "They took a shot," Perlman joked. Seriously, Perlman said, he's always open to doing stunt work. "I do [stunts whenever] somebody says, 'This is safe, Ron, I think you can do this.'"

Perlman plays the lead character in Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Mike Mignola's comic series—a giant, red demon who battles evil on behalf of a mysterious government agency. Perlman added it was no problem doing stunts in red makeup. "Working with [makeup artist] Rick Baker, it's kind of made to order," he said. "It's made for you and no one else, and it really fits and works. It's made for you to move in." Hellboy opens April 2.

Seriously though, I think it was just my IP that got banned. I tried to click the message board link and it said I was banned. Since I hadn't posted or anything, I found it hard to figure out why. I emailed the admin of this board about it and got no reply... anyway, I was finally able to get in again, about a month later when my ISP changed their addressing scheme.

Try getting the DC Archives Editions of the GL. Sure, they cost an arm and a leg, but they're well worth it. They collect all those old issues from when the character was first created.

Morning folks. I wanted to jump in early with a bit of interesting news from director Guillermo del Toro about the forthcoming DVD release(s) of the forthcoming Hellboy. In an interview over at Countingdown.com, del Toro reveals that the film will be released as a movie-only edition in August, and then as a fully-loaded 2 or 3-disc special edition in December. The SE will also include a longer version of the film, as well as "a special box with a bust of Hellboy with the gun." Nice. Here's to hoping the flick rocks. We don't know the real reason he has the RIGHT HAND OF DOOM yet. The film has an explanation for it... you'll have to watch to find out what it is.

Hint: Rasputin.

Mike Mignola, the creator hasn't explained it yet in the comics, but when he does it's said to be a different explanation from what we'll see in the film version.

Well....I just saw the trailer. I just dont feel this is going anywhere. That may be because i've never read the comics. But i feel that the carracters and stuff just looks funny. And i didnt like the look of this hellboy. But then again, this may be because i've never read the comics and dont realy know what this is about.

But as a no-comic reader, i dont think I will watch this in the cinema. I might rent it. Looks to corny. Sorry if i insulted someone with this, but this is just my opinion....

Pictures include...

Hellboy with his horns fully grown.

The deformed fetus from Guillermo Del Toro's other movie The Devil's Backbone.

and a Homunculus. For those who've read the comicbook. This is not Roger, but just a wink to his character. If you have the DVD you can clearly see the ring where his nads should be when you zoom into that scene.

From RevolutionSF's review of 'Hellboy':

"This is the first must-see geek movie of 2004. The faithful translation to film, coupled with del Toro's quirky visual style, made this some of the best eye candy I've seen since Spider-Man or X2. It's that good. Expect to hear some quibbles about the occasional CGI shot, or minor character tweak. In other words, the usual bulls**t...To them I say this: If that's all you're upset about, then this film is an unqualified success. Considering that I would have deemed this project unfilmable, and by contrast the sheer number of creepy tentacles that made it into the movie, you'll swallow your tongue at what they got right. Del Toro and Mignola are really proud of the movie. Go see Hellboy and you'll understand why."

Personally, I give it a 9.5/10.

It had some slight problems, but the more I think about the film the more I don't care about the problems.

Problems were things like the fact that some CG didn't work. Some action scenes were too short. Some dialog was a little over the top. All nitpicky stuff, but it might make a difference to some.

The good far outweighed the bad. For hardcore fans, you'll either love or hate it. For newbies. I havn't met a one that didn't like it. Yet. Seems to be great for people who don't have the crutch of knowing the source material. Primarily because there are so many changes from the original.

It's the best comicbook translation so far, for me.

It's a girl silly. Elizabeth Sherman, played by Selma Blair. She looks so much better in person, if you've met her. Not sure why she keeps on picking these weird girl roles.

Yes. met and had dinner with all the main cast, except for her. She declined my invitation to join us. She had other plans, I suppose. She's got a foul mouth, but you'd never know it until she starts into her conversations.

wow guys i just looked in the paper and roger ebert gave hellboy

***1/2 stars

Ebert probably did his "oooh, I don't know what's going on but it looks nice and I liked the energy and spirit" thing. He did that with The Fifth Element and Tomb Raider as well.

Terrible Film.

Hellboy blew me away. The plot made the movie so interesting. It was awesome knowing who Rasputin was. It made the plot so much better. All the connections you could make was a nice touch. From the humor, to the action, to the small love story, it was a very nicely done movie.

But I'm going to say that if it wasn't for the plot, I wouldn't think so much about this movie. I think that kept me going, otherwise I thought it was a very dull film, but the plot kept it alive. All in all, it was well worth the money. I'm not also going ahead and saying this will be the best movie of the year based on a comics and superheoros. There are still many films to be seen until that is said.

Oh, and did anyone wait after the first batch of credits ended? There was an extra scene. I suggest you guys wait out the few minutes and see it. Nothing spectacular, but it's a scene nonetheless. :p

Ok I'm going to make this a very simple review. I am a huge Hellboy fan and have read quite a bit of Magnola's work. This film was so true to his vision and Hellboy mythology, that it may very well be my second favorite comic film ever now behind The Crow and Batman.

The adaptation of the Demon Seed arc was as dead on and filled with mythology, and lore that I was in heaven from the second the film started. Everything from the comic was in there.

As for the film itself the presentation was breathtaking. The effects, acting and script were some of the best I've seen yet in a comic film, and just film period. Perlman gave yet another stellar performance, and the rest of the cast did wonderfully.

I give it a 10 and that's the bottomline because CC knows his ****:D

Since when has Perlman ever given a stellar performance ?

He's a character actor, He gives memorable supporting roles but not stellar.
Since you liked it Matt and rank it with Crow, I'll give it a shot.Iguess.
