The image of Frodo (a full body shot, btw), was just part of the magazine layout, I didn't crop the pic to take him out...actually, in the original picture, Gollum is also shown with gaming miniatures.

Who do you guys think are behind them?
Looks like Eowyn (or Legolas because of the hair) and Gandalf a little further away. Who is supposed to be there? And I'm pretty sure Pippin wasn't there when Merry got injured in the book...
Since the details are a bit hazy for me, was Legolas and Gandalf there at the time in the book?

DA those pictures aren't really 100% conclusive for me regarding the Wiki, there just from fans like us having seen the trailer on their PC. Having said that, being as the Nazgul in question was emerging for MM at the same time that the 'signal' was issued, I think we all assumed it was the Wiki anyway did we not. :)

adt100
10-15-2003, 09:13 PM
LOTRfan, I'm pretty sure that in between Pippin/Merry and Gandalf is just another male Rohan soldier. You could see him from the shot in the trailer.

LOTRfan
10-15-2003, 09:39 PM
thanks...that makes more sense. I didn't think to check the trailer. And that hair was throwing me off...

Wait a minute. Thats in the trailer? I didn't see it in the one on Lordoftherings.net and I watch it over and over. Where is the trailer with that in it?

Necross
10-15-2003, 10:46 PM
Oh and the Witch King thing. Doesn't Frodo and Sam see him at the crossroads? They may have had to alter some parts slightly, but they wanted to still have Sam and Frodo see him. So anyway lets wait for the movie to come out.

cool pics there people. i'm wondering what gimli is looking at when he is staring. i think it's POTD, or it could be the Oathbreakers, or maybe the orcs at Pelennor

DolAmroth

Amazing pics. :applaud: I am surprised that given that we are only 2 months away from ROTK, we have only seen 2 'pics' from Mount Doom. Someone at New Line is being very careful so that they aren't leaked...it is, after all, 2 and a half years since they filmed that scene!

He is. Don't worry, that's just some random Orc or some such. We've seen the pics of the MOS (played by Bruce Spence) having make-up applied to his jaw a long time ago.

After reading the article over at torn about not releasing screen shots of the bosses for the rotk video game i wonder why NL does not wait to release the game until after the movie. once the game comes out we will get a good idea on how the wiki mouth of sauron, and shelob look. also the big surprise person that Aragorn fights. if that part makes it into the movie

any thoughts

DolAmroth
10-16-2003, 04:13 PM
Well its no real big deal anyways so what we will know what the witck king looks like. Its not gunna really spoiler anything of what he does.

coal-ash
10-16-2003, 04:39 PM
yeah i know but it seems like al of newlines efforts are in vien. by trying to keep things secret then showing them amonth before the film

adt100
10-16-2003, 04:45 PM
I can understand NL's decision on the 1 hand, but on the other it does seem a bit pointless given that i) we've seen the Wiki, ii) we've seen Shelob iii) we've seen the MOS's jaw and helmet. I doubt a polygon model in a game will be too much of a 'spoiler'.

adt100
10-16-2003, 06:20 PM
Yep, that's the other pic (1 of 2) that has been touted as possibly the MOS's helm. I've never been too keen on it TBO, the downward horns look a little corny for some reason, and it relly doesn't fit with the 'style' of Mordor and Sauron IMO. With the full outfit I suppose it could look quite good though, we'll just have to wait and see. :)

Personally I'm a little disappointed that it looks like we won't be seeing the gold/black spiked crown anywhere in ROTK. I really liked the look of that design. :(

Incidentally, Sideshow Weta have just posted pics of their latest collectible, the Morgul Lord atop his Fell Beast. Not a very large picture and virtually impossble to see any detail of his helm/crown, but extrapolating from the picture we have seen on the official site, it does appear a bit more 'crown-like' around the rim, with the central spike eminating more from the front and curving back rather than from the very centre. (which is good BTW IMO :) )

Yes, they filmed it. PJ said so on his FOTR EE Commentary.

Yes, it's covered in 1 of the many, many features on the FOTR EE.

One of the scenes I loved in the book, the chasing of the Fellowship into the forest, and then the Orcs coming to a stop because they don't dare enter... Hopefully we'll see it eventually in one form or another...

Glordreen
10-17-2003, 11:23 PM
Maybe they'll add it to the "Special Trilogy" in about 5 years or so.

Necross
10-17-2003, 11:54 PM
I have a feeling we will see it in a "Speacial Trilogy" in the future as well. They did film it...well because they said it but also there is a scene of it on the Fotr trailer at lordoftherings.net, with Legolas getting ready to shot an arrow while the rest of the fellowship runs past. Also in Fellowship EE, there is a scene of that that they had for the storyboards. Picture of Legolas preparing to shot the arrow, but then hundreds of arrows fly out from behind him at the orcs.

Anybody got the LOTR Trvial Pursuit game? Here's some spoiler from it:

Legolas kills Wormtounge
Aragorn fights and kills the Mouth of Sauron
Gollum tells Frodo Sam is trying to steal the ring from him

There's a whole host of them out there, but those seem to be the most interesting.

Good guess, and I hate to disagree with you adt, but they're not moria Orcs. Look at the eyes, they're far too small -- Moria orcs were designed with very large eyes to see in the dark -- go check out FOTR and see. Not to mention this aspect of their design is something that's covered in one of the special features, I believe it's one of the lordoftherings.net featuretts on the FOTR theatrical DVD.

Furthermore, the sequence of being chased into Lorien occurred in the forest setting, you can see more than one part of the sequence by digging through the trailers on FOTR.

Tsk, tsk, disagreeing with me! That'll never do. ;)

Ther definitely are Moria Orcs as identified by their armour, and not all of them had HUGE eyes. If you don't believe me just check the EE - both the film and the picture galleries. :)

The Moose

Mr. Frodo, is that clip in the teaser trailer for the ROTK game?

Spy-Of-Saruman
10-18-2003, 08:02 AM
I agree with ADT, those are Moria Orcs, the armour in the distance looking "cockroach-ish" as PJ wanted and the Orc closest to the edge at the front has rather large eyes too.

As much I'd like them to be, those two orcs are not Gorbag and Shagrat. Follow the link to see them. The one with the mace is a generic orc. I think Shagrat might be the Uruk.

Two reasons:

1) The three pack is called Gorbag, Shagrat and Orc with Mace

2) On Games Workshop website, they have pics of the new ROTK products. One is a two pack of Gorbag and Shagrat. They are the same green one and long haired one.

I think that's proof conclusive. I don't really like the green one though, I would've preferred the ones you said adt100

Well why didn't you say that before. Comparing those pictures from the Green Dragon site, and the miniatures from Games Workshop (SOS posted them in the other thread), they do look very similar, and certainly different from those that I posted, which have long been around the 'net and assumed to be G and S.

I would say that you're right, it's pretty conclusive. Like you though I preferred the pics I posted due to their similarity with the Alan Lee painting. :)

I would disagree with that anaylsis downflow. The momentum has been building behind ROTK all year, and unlike last year there have been relatively few challengers, and those that were touted as being hot contenders have been receiving less than stellar reviews.

Of course there are never any certainties, and we all know how bizarre some of the Academys decisions can be, but ROTK has as strong a chance as any film out this year.

These things tend to happen in phases, we haven't had a big 'epic' win best picture for a few years now (Gladiator was the last) so this year is shaping up nicely for ROTK.

downflow311
10-21-2003, 02:35 PM
Lost in Translation not a challenger? Sophia Coppola and Bill Murray not challengers? i suggest seeing this movie if its out in the UK adt. it will sweep the oscars IMO. the Academy will continue to shun PJ and LOTr. and since ROTK is considered by the academy to be a sequel, its further proof it wont win anything beyond technical awards. Academy doesnt award sequels. History ('cept Godfather 2) proves that.

im not trying to be hard on you guys but im just trying to ground you all. in reality it will in 3-4 oscars at most and only technical awards IMO. i cant beleive some fans think it will win 7 or more. its completely biased and ridiculous IMO.

BTW i want ROTK to win just as many as all you guys want it to. but when realization sits in just doesnt make sense.

Lost in Translation will not win best picture, it probably wont even be nominated. It may get a nod for Murray, Coppolla, and the script, but that's it.

downflow311
10-21-2003, 02:43 PM
i guarantee it gets nominated for best picture. the academy loves this type of movie. the most critically praised movie this year and a landmark for Bill Murray's career.

I've not heard anything of that film yet downflow so can't really comment, but it's not a film that I've heard mentioned in any of the build-up at all. Yes it may get a nod from the Academy with regard a nomination, but be sure that will be all. They may like that kind of film, but unlike many award shows AMPAS usually shower 1 main film with multiple awards, and rarely (if ever) is the Best Picture award given as a separate entity.

You mention Godfather 2, and wisely so. I see no reason why ROTK cannot follow this success. 2 other films I would compare are Titanc and Braveheart. BOth of which in mnay areas you can consider very similar to ROTK and ample evidence that the Academy are willing to reward such films.

downflow311
10-21-2003, 03:26 PM
titanic and Braveheart were not sequels though. they were original pieces of film. i think this sequel thing will sway the academy's decision; as it has always done.

Lost in Translation has had more buzz then any other film this year in the states. and since its from Sophia Coppola, Frances' daughter, i think that the politics of the awards will play a major role in the academy's decision.

BTW theres no doubt in my mind ROTK will get several nominations. i just dont see it winning; just like in the past. i dont see a reason why the academy wont continue to ignore PJ and crew.

PJ will most definatley win best Director for his efforts in the trilogy. It mite win Best Picture because ROTK does look more emotional than the previous 2 and it is the crowner film of the trilogy. The academy love emotional films. If you look at Oscar related sites ROTK is at the top of the list for Best Picture. At least thats a start. Go to www.oscarwatch.com and there is links down the left hand side of the page to other Oscar related sites Can u imagine if ROTK does win Best Picture. It wud be absolutely amazin.

Those pics with pippin and the palantir shed some light on of the scenes in the trailer. Obviously the palanir event takes place in Edoras, now at the same time Pippin is taking the palantir, Aragorn and Legolas could be outisde looking toward's mordor talking about "the eye of the enemy is moving..." When Pippin looks into the palantir and Sauron sees him, that could lead to Legolas saying the line "he is here..." For the eye of Sauron would have shifted from Frodo and Sam to Pippin at Edoras.

It's true, the event was changed to have the event take place at edoras instead of in the dark forest like in the book. Although we still have the spirit because we will see Gandalf riding with Pippin on shadowfax in the dark forest.

Well, it's just the removal of a finger, I doubt that WETA would really screw up the removal of a finger. If they can create an army of 200,000 orcs, then they can easily remove a finger and make it look convicing.

BOY!!!! That is going to be a sight to see when that baby is lit!!

Can U imagine what the sight will be like from rohan encampment??? To see this haunting light up in the pitch black sky. This also connects to a scene seen in the new vid, where Aragorn tells Theoden they must ride at dawn. If they see it from the camp, it does support what Aragorn says about Gondor being under attack and they must ride at dawn.

They are sensational pics! :applaud: I especially like the Frodo and Sam dresses as Orcs picture, although I'm not expecting much - if any - of that to be in the cinema version of the film.

However isn't it light on the slopes of Mount Doom...I would have thought that they would have shot that scene in the evening?

adt100
10-24-2003, 04:27 AM
i) It's inevitable Frodo and Sam's trek with the Orcs will be in the theatrical cut, it's not something they could simply leave for the EE. Besides, after CU they don't have much screen time other than Mount Doom, so it would have been strange indeed had they cut it.

ii) If your up the side of a baron mountain like that, the film crew don't want to be working in such a narrow time frame, and so dependant on weather conditions. Most of the shots are colour graded. For example, when Legolas give his 'he is here' line to Aragorn in the trailer, it was filmed in broad daylight.

The Moose
10-24-2003, 05:50 AM
that's exactly what i was thinking about that pic of Mt. Doom. we see it in the prologue as dull and brown. obviously doing colour grading.

Secondly I`m a little confused it concerns what Aragorn says on the latest video footage on MSN and now u are saying he says that possibly when the Beacon is lit correct me if i`m wrong but surely if it sticks to the book then Aragorn would not be with the Rohirrum at that time???? should he not arrive later at MT than them?? Because as you know, they have been continually working on ROTK up until the deadline for delivery, which is apparently next week. The guides will have been created a while ago, and as digital grading is one of the last things to happen to the film, it's not surprising that those pictures are in like that.

Also I wouldn't expect too many 'direct from the movie' pictures in it anyway. Mor like production shots, and behind the scenes things

Also to note, the skies have not been digitally rendered in the Mordor shots. I'm sure the skies won't be bright and sunny.

Indeed bmp. I found it quite funny on a few forums I've been browsing that some people are really concerned about how 'bright and sunny' Mordor looks in these shots!

(I think they need to look at their disks 3 and 4 of the FOTR EE 1 more time :D )

Pippin in the Gondorian clothing worn by Faramir as a child (notice the attention to detail again in the scae of the chainmail - noticeably smaller than that worn by adult men) -

I still want to know how Frodo and Sam find orc armor that fit, since all the orcs we have seen in the movies are human sized, not hobbit sized. How can the pass for orcs? if they said goblins, smaller versions of orcs, I would accept it. But they spefically say orc armor, in the books and the movie.

Frodo and Sam in Mordor, presumably with very little water left in that pouch. (again, the detail and make-up work is very impressive) -

If you look at the pictures you can see that the armour (both clothing and helms) are quite big on the 2 Hobbits. Also 'goblins' is just another term for Orcs, who come in all shapes and sizes. I agree that it was always a bit questionable whether they could pass as Orcs in the book, but in the dark, with that armour I think it's possible. We're not talking about Urak-hai that would be the size of a large adult male.

I'm glad that Elrond's sons seem to make an appearence, although someone over at TORn claims that they have seen a photo from the ROTK Visual Companion in which Arwen is sitting with Elrond as Narsil is presented to Aragorn.
