View Full Version : So I just watched... (horror edition)

I just watched a flick called Satan's Little Helper that was almost really cool. It's about a little kid who decides to help out a serial killer in a Satan mask on Halloween, thinking it's all a real-life version of his video game. Yeah, dumbass kid, but the ridiculous setup makes for a surprisingly good movie. Well, almost. It is really low-budget with almost no production to speak of, and some ridiculous costumes and acting, but even with those things hampering it it's great.

It's a damn shame watching a little flick like that and thinking goddamn, if someone would just have given these folks a budget they could've made something awesome. This movie had the same kind of really black sense of humor as stuff like Idle Hands or Evil Dead 2 (but not that good, don't get me wrong), but it never really got to play itself out right. The suit-thing that the killer wears is extra goofy looking and really hampers the vibe of it, plus I don't know how it's possible to be a bad actor in a costume and mask but that guy manages it. However, there are scenes that are genuinely outstanding, like the parking lot one where Satan's pushing the kid around in the cart. Or the scene involving the little punk's dad. That little kid was one of the most annoying child actors ever, too, so that didn't help either. Anyway, it was just criminal watching this and seeing the enormous potential sorta wasted with a super-low budget.

I ripped this thread off from the General forum, but I figured it's better than starting a new one every time I see a random horror flick. I hope other people use it too.

I've always considered watching that movie but just never got around to it, but you've influenced me to watch it. Thanks.

timecrimes

it was considered a horror film on the netflix thing but it wasn't exactly straight horror, more a little more grisly version of time travel. somewhat confusing towards the end but overall a pretty awesome movie. i believe it was a spanish film, and, big surprise, it is in the process of being re made for american audiences.

a man and his wife move into a house out in the country that is in construction, when the man notices some strange happenings in his back yard. can't really go into much detail without ruining something, but on the dvd version i have heard there is a chronological version that they re-edited together, so that is pretty cool and i plan on checking it out as well.

Netflix actually recommended that Timecrimes movie to me based on my preferences and q-ee and crap. I think I'll check it out soon.

I just watched a movie called Reeker. It sucked. The opening scene was absolutely kick-ass and made me think goddamn, this is gonna be awesome. And then...it wasn't. It started out pretty good, like through the first twenty minutes or so, but once the deaths start coming it turns super-lame super-fast. The effects are really ****ty, and it's kinda sad seeing Michael Ironside slog his way through something like this. The twist at the end has a good portion of extra crappy on the side, too. Lame flick. Don't bother watching it.

I'd been thinking about watching Reeker. Glad I waited now. I'll probably still check out some random day in the future, but it's dropped a few spots on my list.

I watched Waxwork the other day. That was crazy bad. Other than a great wolfman kill and a pretty good premise (obviously a take on the "murderous house of wax" idea, but still fairly original) it was just plain garbage. Even John Rhys Davies and David Warner couldn't save it.

Goddamnit, I just made a big ****in huge long post about The Collector, hit submit, and it told me it lost my connection. Of course immediately after, it connected fine, once my bull**** was lost. I hate it when that happens.

Anyway, I just got back from seeing it, and it was absolutely killer. Not at all like I was expecting. I thought about starting a review thread in current movies but since approximately one person other than me seems interested in it (JB) I decided not to. I don't wanna give too much away 'cuz I think it's better to go in blind, like I did, not even knowing the basic premise. I just knew there was some **** involving a burglar and it was horror, that was enough for me. I was very surprised by it. A lot of parts are very tense, some are very gory, and some are ****in brutal. What was most unusual was the lack of dialogue. I think you could write down every word spoken in this movie and it would take up one page, that's how little is said. The silence it uses throughout is very effective, especially considering there's not even any music used for most of it. There are a few flaws that I'm sure others would point out if they saw it, but I'm very forgiving when something works. And this worked very well for me. I give it 8 out of 10. I still think Orphan was the best I've seen this year, but it's sort of an apples and oranges thing 'cuz this is just a completely different kind of movie. I guess it fits best in the torture porn mini-genre, but it's better than Hostel and 1000 Corpses and maybe even Saw. I'm gonna have to see it again before I make that last call, but I will just say that it's definitely worth seeing and recommend it to everyone wholeheartedly.

so was is it good that there wasn't much dialogue?

Yeah, it was a good thing. It made for a pretty unusual feeling the whole way. There's stuff going on, and the suspense in a lot of parts is made thicker because silence is such a key element. It was really good.

Just got done watching it, and I agree that it was a pretty awesome flick. Lots of bonus points for using Blondie's "Picture This" to such great effect, I love that song. My only complaint is the ending, which I thought sorta fell flat. It was pretty predictable for the first little while, like Hector 1 seeing Hector 2 with all the bandages and ****, I kinda knew it was himself right away. And also the phone call. But once Hector 2 makes the decision to go back and become Hector 3, I had absolutely no ****ing idea what to expect from the rest of it. That's why the ending felt a little drab, 'cuz I was expecting something huge and cool to happen and it turns out they just sat there and waited for Hector 2 to go back. I don't know if I was thinking there'd be some big Shyamalan-type thing at the end or what, but it just felt like the end didn't really fit with the excellent rest of it. Anyway, that aside, it really was pretty killer. I'd be interested to see that reedited version you're talking about, too. I might hunt it down on DVD, I think this and Primer are two of the coolest time-travel flicks I've seen 'cuz of how drastically different they are from most.

I watched a movie today that literally creeped the **** out of me. It's an obscure little film called Home Movie, by director Christopher Denham and stars Adrian Pasdar of Heroes fame.
It's basically a series of vid cammed home movies that tell a story of a seemingly perfect family..birthday's, family pets, holiday's. But something is seriously wrong w/ the twin 10 year old's in this film and the parents recognize it, try to deal w/ it through religion and psycho therapy, even med's. As the plot begins to emerge things get eerily out of whack and the ending is just ****ing macabre, you feel like you've watched a real home video collection of a family's sick and twisted descent into odd behavior. Typically any film that involves children in a demonic or menacing way tend's to send a chill up my spine, but this one is the topper.
If your not a fan of the handy cam way of shooting movies you may not like this, but it's well worth the annoyance, because all the while your wonering just who it is that's allowing you to see these video's, that get's answered in the end. I'm getting creeped out just thinking about the film.:funny:

I didn't read any of your post past the first couple sentences. Not in a dick way or anything, but all I needed to read was "creeped me out" and "Adrian Pasdar" and I was sold. So I figured I'd view it ASAP, knowing almost nothing, and then read your thoughts. And give my own. That's just how I prefer to do things. But Netflix don't have it, and IMDB says it's unreleased or some crap, so where did you see it?

It was pretty goddamn creepy, alright. What makes it work so well, I think, is how believable the set-up is and how likable the family is. Particularly Adrian Pasdar, who was quite funny through most of it. His comic timing is great, I'm surprised we don't see more of that from him. That guy is so underappreciated. Anyway, some of the stuff is pretty standard like the crucified cat and killing the animals and such. But the couple of scenes where the kids just pop up out of nowhere are really effective and creepy, as is the exorcism scene and the faint laughter you could hear during it. That kind of **** wigs me out, that's why Blair Witch worked so well for me. In fact, this reminded me somewhat of that in places, but the story is so different that I think it's just the handy-cam thing that did so. The ending was downright unnerving, I'd say from the time the kids get the camera, right up 'til the last shot. Good ****in movie.
