View Full Version : 8th Annual Super Bowl Pool (XLIII)

Arizona Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
8th year running, it’s time for the JBond Super Bowl Pool.
Simply give a score for both the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers and do it by February 1st.
Scoring-wise, I’m going to be doing this a little bit different this time. It’s looks complicated, but it’s simple in visual terms. Don’t worry about it.
First, in math terms:
http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL715/2562261/5091714/351718909.jpg
CaPS - Cardinals predicted score
CaAS - Cardinals real score
StPS - Steelers predicted score
StAS - Steelers real score
The person with the lowest score (X), wins.
The old way was:
X = |GiPS - GiRS| + |PaPS - PaRS|
The scoring is based on how many points you are off on each score, but THIS TIME, you are rewarded for getting closer to the actual score and not just the individual teams scores.
For a great example, lets look at last years:
http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL715/2562261/5091714/302260839.jpg
Diablo beat Handsome Rob last year because he was 7 points off and Handsome Rob was 8 points off. However, with the new scoring method, Handsome Rob would win for his POINT being CLOSEST to the winning POINT. That’s what I meant my visual.
If your point on the scoring graph is closest to the winning point, YOU WIN
I will not accept any new posts or EDITS to your post during the day of the Super Bowl! (February 1st)

2-1 the Reds?
I have no idea how American football works but I think I'll put in a guess just for giggles.
So far it's 3 to 1 for the Arizona Cardinals people to win (even if apparently it was one sided the other way last year) and from past results I think 30 is too high. I'm gonna say.
Arizona Cardinals: 29
Pittsburgh Steelers: 26
Someone remind me on the day and I'll see just how good/crap my guess was.

wait, i dont get it. What if your total score is negative. Your predicted score is less than the actual score in both cases. You cant take a square root of a negative can you?

Arizona- 17

The total sum could never be a negative because both team differences are first squared, removing the minus. The equation is for the radius of a circle.
Before I only used absolute values, not taking into effect the two scores' relation to each other.
Also, you can take the square root of a negative. http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/44.gif

my math might be rusty but I thought you cant because the square root is anything times itself will equal that number. Meaning the square root of 100 is 10 (10X10=100). But -100 cant work because to get that you would have to multiply 10X-10. Because (-10)X(-10)=100.
sorry to go all math on anyone, it just all started with my first question and went from there, lol

Actually Boro is right you can take a square root of a negative but it involves imaginary numbers or something like that. I never got that at my level of Maths in school so I might be off a wee bit.

Anyway, I'm predicting the Cardinals because I think their underdog status will lead them to play a lot less cautiously. They have nothing to lose and I think they want it more. People have predicted against them every game of the post-season, much like the giants last year, and they've exceeded expectations each time.

How can anyone hate the Cardinals? Unless you're a fan of a division rival, which you're not. That's like hating the Clippers...
But both of these teams are pretty exciting to watch, the Steelers defense and Cardinals offense both come up with a lot of spectacular plays pretty often...hell I would say the Cardinals are one of the MOST exciting teams in the league, especially since the playoffs began, with all their Warner-to-Fitzgerald goodness and trick plays and whatnot.

Btw, those commercials were about as unfunny as last years'. I laughed a couple times here and there, but mostly it was commercials trying way to hard. (I'm looking at you, Mr. Guy-gets-hit-by-bus-at-end-for-no-reason Doritos.)
The best commercials were the ones that didn't try to be funny, like the Jason Statham Audi commercial and the Coca-Cola commercials where the bugs stole the coke.
Careerbuilder and Quicktrip made me laugh pretty hard. Hulu wasn't bad. Audi was great. The rest...whatever. Fantastic game though.

The commercials were kind of weak this year. My favorites were the Coke Zero with ole #43, the MacGruber's Pepsi commercial, and the Careerbuilder.com ad just because you don't see a Koala bear with glasses on and a cup of coffee in its hand get punched everyday.

Hahahaha, so glad the Cardinals failed epically and won myself $350. As always, I win in the end. I told them, I told those people that the Cardinals may make it to the Super Bowl, but they would not win it. Now I gotta go in tomorrow and say I told you so.
But on the other hand, I wanted the Cardinals to win just cause I can't stand the Steelers and the people here in this city need a winning team badly.

there is no way they would go out of bounds. it wasn't even that close.
What? Are you kidding me? His toes were the only thing to tap the ground before he fell out of bounds. If holmes had bent his knees only a little, he would have never made that touchdown. At the speed he was going, he would have passed the boundry and hit just beyond the endzone.

Did anyone else find the refs to be really annoying today?
The Refs, the Commercials, the Steelers, pretty much everything.
Although, Faith Hill = Amazing. Nuff Said. Good to see Jennifer Hudson out there.

I must have missed the part where Harrison was acting like an a-hole. What happened?

the toes are the only thing that need to be in bounds. and is is very much in bounds. he is like a good foot and a half in bounds. Good Wrs know how to keep their toes in bounds. cmakinhg a catch out of bounds is a rookie mistake, or a mistake made by a bad WR. Holems is a pretty solid WR. It only took me two vieews to know for sure it was

Oh I know about his toes, trust me, I've been thinking about the toes all damn night, lol. My friend gave me the same speech you just did as she rubbed her victory in my face before going home, lol. And isn't it so hard to ask for a bad wide reciever in a moment of possible victory on my part? IS IT? ;)
yeah. it is just that they do it on purpose if they are close to going out. they never bend their knees. they always lock the legs straight to make sure the toes tap. even the bad ones do it. the bad ones just do it when they are over the white line.

Tolkien....and I mean this in the nicest way possible. Stuff it. :)
Cardies had it up and Steelers marched it down the field when they needed to score. Harrison, while he does have a temper, does not pick a fight just because he feels like it. You would know this if you watched the team. Ike Taylor, on the other hand, still has a lot of growing up to do. Warner, and the Cards, played a great game. It just wasn't enough.
Complain about the refs. Yeah, they annoyed me too, but that's not the Steelers fault. Bottom line, Harrison made a big play, Roethlisberger lead his team on a last minute drive like a veteran. And he, with Holmes, got them the win. You cannot not take that away from the team or the fans. It was a battle and both teams fought with everything they had. Complaints just cheapen it for everyone.
I don't know why I'm bothering to say anything. I know it's only going to be chalked up to my fandom. But I'm proud of this team and everything they have done to get to this point. They have done it with pretty much no one giving a damn. They're not glamour. They're not explosive. They just love the game. And they play like it.
They deserve this just has much as anyone else. Maybe even a little more since they are the ones actually holding the trophy.

I don't care who anyone is, what Harrison did to get his personal foul showed a complete lack of class. I don't know much about his personal life, but being a thug on the field shows a lot. Not cool at all.

One push? It was several pushes and just being an ass. Even if you get pissed, you have to keep your cool and your professionalism about you. People talk smack on the field EVERY play and I don't see a fight breaking out like that every play. Classless.
yeah, that did look wrong. but he was the only player that did anything like that, on either team.

They won. I'm happy. I'm not going to debate pointless details anymore.
haha, i am not taking anything away from the steelers. they were the clear winner. i was just making an observation. it looked "wrong" but it wasn't exactly "bad." i think he just lost a little self control, which i think is understandable.

Even Madden said he should have gotten ejected for it. I'm sorry, I know you guys have this thing because it's your team and all, but there comes a point when you have to call a spade a spade. If that was my team and someone did that I would call their ass out on it. Harrison lost a lot of respect on one play. For those who haven't seen the play, here's a crappy clip of it:

Ewok, I'm not saying he was right in pushing him over. I'm saying his reaction was slightly unusual and that there seems to be more to it than what we saw. Should he have been ejected? I don't know, though I have seen others get away with worse. That's not my call to make. Everyone loses a little self-control at one time or another.
He got penalized for it and bears the disdain of millions of bandwagon fans. There. Validation.

they deserve mad respect from everyone because they overcame a hell of a lot just to get there and then to put it together when it is all on the line and get it done is what it is all about
he did punch the due outright though which was really odd at that time

Yeah he should have gotten tossed for that one
meh game was basically over by then it didn't matter enough
haha Skip Bayles sis talking about it right now and about how Farrior taken his helmet off on the field before the game was over was a penalty and how they blew calling Holmes for his on field celebration when it is in the rulebook you can't do it lol

which is why it didn't matter much. tossing him out would have been a matter of principle, because he deserved to get thrown out. But it didn't effect the score at all. penalty or no, the steelers would have won.
