Okay, I know the Trailer Park Of Terror thread wasn't exactly an overwhelming success, but this is different. That movie was just cool, nothing more. But I just got done watching Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon a couple hours ago and holy ****, it was WAY more than cool. It was great.

But it's not a horror flick. It's a comedy. But it's not just a comedy. I don't wanna overstate things, but I will say that it is the best genre movie I've seen in years. Definitely since the millennium, at least. Great direction, ****in stellar script, good acting (for the most part) and hey, Robert Englund! What's not to love? I gotta talk about it some but don't wanna ruin it if you haven't seen it so I'm gonna do some blackout ****. Do not read said blackout **** if you haven't seen it, you will be ripping yourself off. And also, go out and rent it immediately.

I went into this expecting a straight-up comedy. Which is mostly what it was, three quarters of the way, and said comedy was absolutely wonderful. It's like a friggin wet dream for genre fans, there are a ton of in-jokes and not just that but the entire friggin premise is an in-joke. The whole thing plays like one big in-joke, but not in a condescending way like Scream or those other sardonically self-aware flicks that try too hard to be witty. This one is entirely different, and you can tell that everyone involved with it has a genuine love for the slasher film.

Then comes the turning point about three quarters through, where Taylor says "the documentary's over," and for a second there I thought they'd ****ed the football and hosed it all up. The mood of it, the narrative structure, the point of view, it all changes and it's pretty jarring at first. But it didn't take long for the movie to suck me back in, just from an entirely different angle. The scene where Leslie is running down that fatass cameraman, and tubby takes Leslie's mask off and starts saying "Leslie, it's me! It's Todd!" and et cetera, almost begging. The way that scene was played and well-done by the guy playing Leslie, it sent shivers down my spine it was so overwhelmingly impressive. The twist with the virgin was easy to spot, but not until the big turning point. At least not for me, but I'm notoriously stupid that way so others might see it way sooner.

Anyway, I was absolutely shocked by how clever this movie is. Clever, intelligent, original, surprising, funny, it's ****in everything. This may well be in my top five all-time horror list. I recommend it unreservedly, which means you should go out and get it instead of ignoring me, peckers. You'll be glad you did this time.

Also, I promise not to start making threads every time I see a cool movie, but I absolutely had to right now. I sorta regret making the Trailer Park thread now 'cuz I don't wanna be one of those superfluous thread-starters who makes threads all willy-nilly and ****. But this is only like my fifteenth one since I've been here, which averages out to only about three a year, so there. Why am I being so goddamn defensive? Jeez, shut up, me. Okay.

Yeah, I've seen this movie. I liked it a lot too. It wasnt at all what I expected it to be. It was simply hilarious. Kind of didnt like the end, but I still thought it was a pretty solid movie.

"Do you have to be in shape to do this?"
"Yeah, you have to be able to run like a freaking gazelle out there. Plus you have to be able to keep up and make it look like your walking the whole time."

I know that quote isnt exactly right, but that was still a funny line.

It was last year, I believe.

While I'm in this thread and this forum, I rented A Tale Of Two Sisters the other night after hearing all kinds of good **** about it and how it was the best Japanese horror flick since Ringu. I was thoroughly disappointed. It had some truly wigtastic parts, like when the one girl wakes up and sees something at the foot of her bed (I don't wanna give it away, just in case), that part honest-to-god made me scared. I almost got up and turned on the light I was so ****in freaked out. But one effective moment does not a good movie make, and the rest of it was pretty much crapola. Especially the denouement and the explanation for it all. Weak ****in sauce. If anyone's thinking about renting that based on it's reputation, just rent Behind The Mask instead.

Behind the Mask was just delightfully creative. I love the deconstruction of the horror stereotypes. Definitely a horror fans kind of movie.

this movie was pretty badass, best horror movie i've seen in a long time.

i loved leslie vernon's passion for his work, he was so excited all the time. i did feel the second part/last third of the movie was the weakest, but it was pretty good stuff anyway. first 45 minutes are hilarious.

I'd have to say, "Nice."
This films is brilliant. The way it pokes fun of and disects the slasher genre is nothing short of brilliance. You really have to be a fan of the slasher genre to fully understand this movie. Not saying that to be snooty, but its true.

Heres one for RIP, our king of slasher films.

I remember seeing a slasher with my sister more than twenty years ago & its always bugged me that i dont know what it is.
Its the usual killer at a camp story but it kinda like a tribute to other slashers cause the killer wore a hockey mask & also had the freddy glove. One part that i remember was someone getting a drill in the head. I know there isnt much detail but any ideas?

I hated this movie. It wasn't clever, it wasn't funny and it wasn't insightful. It was full of itself from the start. Everything about the execution fell flat. The acting was embarrassingly bad and the whole production was amateurish (I can deal with low-budget, I can't deal with horrible shots). The switch in perspectives is a neat idea, but all it confirms is that I'd rather watch a crappy mockumentary than a piece of **** horror movie. There's no tension in the thrills and no timing in the comedy. All the jokes are obvious and dead on arrival to anyone who has seen even a couple of slasher flicks. There's nothing insightful about the horror genre to be gleamed from this script. It's a dead horse they beat for two hours. It really is beyond me why so many horror fans have recommended this limp mess of a student film to me.

Who's RIP? It sounds to me like you're talking about the ever-awesome Sleepaway Camp 2. There's only one scene involving the glove and mask, the killer doesn't use them the rest of the time. But I'm almost certain that's it, 'cuz there's a chick who gets drilled in the head too. I recommend it unreservedly, it's one of the overlooked gems of the genre.
I hated this movie et cetera

Wow. I can see someone not liking this flick, 'cuz different strokes and bleh,
but hating it? I cannot understand that at all. The acting wasn't bad by anyone, not that I can think of, but I do know I was very impressed with Nathan Baesel as Leslie. I can't see how anyone would classify that as bad. There's no arguing with your opinion, obviously, but I disagree with just about everything you said and from what I've seen most everyone who sees this movie likes it. Especially genre fans, and that's the only part of your post that I can actually disprove: I've seen tons of slasher flicks, and I loved the jokes and suspense. There are certain scenes, like the one where Leslie first kills the two teens ****ing and the film crew starts to freak out, that are downright brilliantly done. Whatever floats your banana and all, but damn does your opinion baffle me.

hey man. I feel the exact same way about this movie.

Les is a horror icon already in my book.

Very very rarely do we get great horror movies like this.
(I consider it a horror in my own weird way)
But it also is very funny.

But I will say this.

The stoners destroyed a big part of this film for me
That chinese dude was just annoying the hell out of me

No one acts like that high
It was such a stereotype
and he was just a horrid actor

But other than that amazing movie
