Okay, I know the Trailer Park Of Terror thread wasn't exactly an overwhelming success, but this is different. That movie was just cool, nothing more. But I just got done watching Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon a couple hours ago and holy ****, it was WAY more than cool. It was great.
But it's not a horror flick. It's a comedy. But it's not just a comedy. I don't wanna overstate things, but I will say that it is the best genre movie I've seen in years. Definitely since the millennium, at least. Great direction, ****in stellar script, good acting (for the most part) and hey, Robert Englund! What's not to love? I gotta talk about it some but don't wanna ruin it if you haven't seen it so I'm gonna do some blackout ****. Do not read said blackout **** if you haven't seen it, you will be ripping yourself off. And also, go out and rent it immediately.
I went into this expecting a straight-up comedy. Which is mostly what it was, three quarters of the way, and said comedy was absolutely wonderful. It's like a friggin wet dream for genre fans, there are a ton of in-jokes and not just that but the entire friggin premise is an in-joke. The whole thing plays like one big in-joke, but not in a condescending way like Scream or those other sardonically self-aware flicks that try too hard to be witty. This one is entirely different, and you can tell that everyone involved with it has a genuine love for the slasher film.
Then comes the turning point about three quarters through, where Taylor says "the documentary's over," and for a second there I thought they'd ****ed the football and hosed it all up. The mood of it, the narrative structure, the point of view, it all changes and it's pretty jarring at first. But it didn't take long for the movie to suck me back in, just from an entirely different angle. The scene where Leslie is running down that fatass cameraman, and tubby takes Leslie's mask off and starts saying "Leslie, it's me! It's Todd!" and et cetera, almost begging. The way that scene was played and well-done by the guy playing Leslie, it sent shivers down my spine it was so overwhelmingly impressive. The twist with the virgin was easy to spot, but not until the big turning point. At least not for me, but I'm notoriously stupid that way so others might see it way sooner.
Anyway, I was absolutely shocked by how clever this movie is. Clever, intelligent, original, surprising, funny, it's ****in everything. This may well be in my top five all-time horror list. I recommend it unreservedly, which means you should go out and get it instead of ignoring me, peckers. You'll be glad you did this time.
Also, I promise not to start making threads every time I see a cool movie, but I absolutely had to right now. I sorta regret making the Trailer Park thread now 'cuz I don't wanna be one of those superfluous thread-starters who makes threads all willy-nilly and ****. But this is only like my fifteenth one since I've been here, which averages out to only about three a year, so there. Why am I being so goddamn defensive? Jeez, shut up, me. Okay.
