I usually just dust off my horror collection and start a marathon right around 5 days or so before Halloween. But i like your idea. I am going to start. I am probably going to start with my least favorite and work up to my favorites. I'll post them in groups of 10 as I go. Going to start today.

Pretty cool elmo zombie, wonder what ones you have next. You should rent some old classics you havent seen and watch those.

I'd have an aneurysm if I watched that many horror movies. But if you haven't yet, check out the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it puts that remake to shame.

i never labeled them as "real horror films", i was just listing some films for him to watch if he wanted to...to expand his mind. although some of them i would consider "real horror films"..like Argento and Fulci. but for the most part i would take "crappy campy" over the regurgitated watered down PG13 "horror" films we see today.

I've been watching a scattering of horror/suspense thrillers/horror comedy movies leading up to my annual horror marathon on Halloween day. So far this month I've watched:

An American Werewolf in London
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
The Wicker Man (1973)
The Happening
Psycho
Strangeland
Vampire in Brooklyn
The Fly II
Saw
Final Destination 1 & 2
Child's Play
Eight Legged Freaks
Slither
From Dusk till Dawn
Scream

Between what I have at home, Netflix, and what AMC shows, this is always a good month.

....London is a good movie. There is only one main wolf and his transformation is awesome! The ending is kinda sudden and abrupt, but other than that its a good movie.

Um... personaly "An American Werewolf In London" is one of my favorite horror films ever made. In my eyes it is arguably the best werewolf movie there is. The sequel is trash. If you like Werewolf movies you should like this. It is kick ass. Plus it has humor too. :)Oh yeah it probably has the best Werewolf transformation of all time in it. :)

I normally hate werewolf movies coz they just look so crap all the time. Even though Van Helsing was crap I remember the werewolf looking good, no where near great but still good. Don't quote me on that it's been so long since I saw Van Helsing maybe I've got the wrong werewolf in my head.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/6002/copiedefredghgwj3.png

Grade: 9/10
Directed by Wes Craven
Written by Wes Craven
Cast: Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, Miko Hughes, Tracy Middendorf, John Saxon, David Newsom, Wes Craven, Matt Winston, Sarah Risher
1994 - 112 minutes

When A Nightmare on Elm Street first touched screens in 1984, horror fans and regular movie-goers were in awe as they witnessed one of the best and most creative horror film of all time. After ten years and six god awful sequels, with Dream Warriors being the only small glimmer of hope, the Nightmare franchise seemed to be in shambles. This all changed when producer Bob Shaye, one of the founders of New Line Cinema, finally put his ego aside and made a phone call to often nicknamed "master of horror" Wes Craven. Craven, being the creator of the first installment has been enormously displeased with the direction his creation has been put on in these past ten years, and rightfully so. Shaye offered Craven full command of the next Elm Street sequel, recognizing the obvious error of his ways.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare has a story that takes place in real time, something that was first offered by Craven for Dream Warriors but quickly rejected by the studio. The film follows lead actress Heather Langenkamp, playing herself as she seems to still be haunted by the iconic horror figure Freddy Krueger in her dreams. When her husband dies in a car accident, Heather suspects that the culprit responsible for the tragedy might in fact be Krueger himself, only this time the dream monster is a demon of sorts taking the form of the movie version we all know and love. With her child Dillion (Miko Hughes) slipping in and out of Freddy possessions, Heather must figure out a way to defeat this dream demon while not going crazy along the way.

This is the sixth sequel in the Nightmare franchise, and really the first one to actually get it right! Craven writes off the humorous jokster that embodied the previous sequels and creates a darker and more evil antagonist than in the other five films. I love how the film jumps back and fourth between dream and reality, bending the law of possibility sharper and sharper as the film progresses. This is where Craven shines. Instead of exploiting the character like so many directors before him did, he only gives us glimpses of the dark Freddy demon, leading to it's satisfying conclusion. This technique is very effective and builds the tension and suspense that each new nightmare brings. The disturbing moments often come from Dillion, as he screams, shouts, falls, and runs from the widely popular dream demon. It was a lot to ask for from a kid, but Hughes pulls it off with ease. Furthermore, the idea of a horror film being within a horror film is really interesting. This creative idea, keeping consistent to the original, really pumped fresh blood into a fading franchise that shouldn't have been in that state to begin with. The various references to the original film was another pleasing element to New Nightmare.

The cast here is universally excellent. Langenkamp gives an authentic performance as herself and really brings us back to what made the first film so intriguing. The cast continuity is also great, as we get to see John Saxon in a meaty supporting role. Englund keeps consistent with his excellent portrayal of Freddy Kreuger. I don't think any can do this character like he can, and he has proven it time and time again. I was also shocked to see Craven here, giving a very solid performance. I indeed think the film's highlight performance is from Miko Hughes, delivering one of the best child performances of the decade. Furthermore, it was very satisfying to learn that some these people's real life issues were actually validly displayed on screen. Langenkamp had had nightmare of Krueger while shooting the original in 1984. The stalker segments in New Nightmare are not made up by Craven, but derived from an experience that Langenkamp has shortly after the film ballooned at the box office.

On the whole, Wes Craven's New Nightmare is the only sequel casual movie-goers should see. Although it has issues, New Nightmare is a triumphant rebirth of a dark and sinister horror icon that had been missing for quite some time. Craven gives a sharp jolt to this dieing franchise as he crafts one of the best horror films of the 90's. Do me a favor, after watching the original Nightmare film go ahead and watch this one afterward. This is a beloved companion piece to A Nightmare on Elm Street that references to old techniques while incorporating a few of its own.

The Strangers (2008)

http://www.baltimoremagazine.net/maxspace/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/strangers-firstlook.jpg

Grade: 5/10
Directed by Bryan Bertino
Written by Bryan Bertino
Cast: Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman, Glenn Howerton, Gemma Ward, Kip Weeks, Laura Margolis
2008 – 85 minutes

The quality of the horror genre this decade has been mediocre at best. Their have been some dreadful films like When A Stranger Calls and some really terrific horrors like The Descent. With other films like Saw and Hostel representing the mediocrity horror for this decade, my expectations for The Strangers were relatively low. For the first twenty minutes or so, I was on the edge of my seat as director Bryan Bertino built a suspense driven atmosphere with unbearable tension. As for the latter half, The Strangers disappointingly spirals downward into mediocre territory, ultimately becoming a traditional mad slasher film.

Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman star as a couple who's relationship has just hit rock bottom when taking a trip to an isolated vacation home. The two are distant and surround themselves with awkward emotions because Kristen (Tyler) had just answered "no" to James' (Speedman) marriage proposal. Things suddenly start to go wrong as the young couple find themselves being terrorized by three strangers wearing masks. As you can see, the plot is rather thin here. Basically this is a 85 minute chase film that wears out its welcome at the halfway point. It strictly follows a traditional slasher film, and steadily declines into a torture film towards its poor conclusion.

Bertino's film does have some scares and suspenseful moments though. The first twenty minutes are mostly very silent, adding to the tension of that inevitable moment where the baddies pop out. This, however, is when the film starts to sink to the bottom. I pretty much guessed each scene correctly before it unfolded on screen. This exposes Bertino's inexperience in storytelling, relying too heavily on predictable scares and cardboard behavior by his lead characters. The baddies here are extremely boring and dull. We never really find the motive in these villains as to why they're terrorizing this couple. At least in a slasher film like Carpenter's Halloween or Clark's Black Christmas we get a little slice as to why the antagonist does what he does. However, the performances are solid, with Tyler's highlighting a pleasant surprise being that I'm not a huge fan of her work (Armageddon).

Moreover, the lead characters surprisingly are effectively built in the beginning of the film, but development halts as soon as the villains appear. Bertino lacks the trait that great horror filmmakers posses, in which is building characters as they face the eyes of adversity. This was well done in a British horror film titled The Descent, one of my favorite gems of the decade. As soon as characters start doing stupid things for no reason, or during a film's halfway mark you don't really know a lead character well, you know you have a mediocre horror at hand. Bertino should have stretched his characterizations lasting till the films conclusion but rather options to put the big STOP sign up in quality storytelling and presents us with a slasher film that borrows a lot from 70's and 80's horror.

Despite the overwhelmingly negatives put forth, the film looks really terrific. You can tell The Strangers was put together well and that Bertino fought tooth and nail to get his production done correctly and effectively. Some of the cinematography was well done, adding to the twenty minutes of actual suspense surrounding the film's atmosphere. But overall, The Strangers is a long list of disappointments that have embodied the genre of horror this decade. Even though Bertino's film looked promising for the first segment or so, the latter half sinks deep into the depths of cliche horror film-making.

The Descent (2006)

http://www.thehollywoodnews.com/images3/decent/4t.jpg

Grade: 10/10
Directed by Neil Marshall
Written by Neil Marshall
Cast: Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid, Saskia Mulder, MyAnna Buring, Nora-Jane Noone, Oliver Milburn, Molly Kayll
2006 – 99 minutes

At first glance, writer/director Neil Marshall's The Descent looked and sounded like a regular hack and slash gore fest that's been crowding the horror stable in recent years. The idea of having an all women cast with really only one man showing up in the entire run of the movie kind of bothered me, and had me questioning whether I should see this in theaters, or on DVD. I chose to wait till the DVD came out and little did I know how that decision would deeply haunt me for the rest of my movie watching life. The Descent turned out not to just be one of the best films of 2006 but one of the best films of the decade.

The plot unfolds with the character Sarah, played by Shauna MacDonald suddenly getting into a tragic car accident where her kid daughter, and seemingly distant husband are brutally killed. From there we flash forward one year later, where Sarah, and a bunch of her “thrill seeking” friends plan to go spelunking in the Appalachian Mountains. When the girls, led by the arrogant, yet likable Juno (Natalie Mendoza) enter the mysterious cave, things go terribly wrong. Yes, the plot sounds rather bland but believe me The Descent's complexity with it's plot and characterizations are truly a sight to see.

Marshall takes his time pacing this film, and all for the better. He builds a strong bond of sisterhood between the six women and makes you believe these girls would do anything and everything for each other, when faced with grand misfortune like our lead Sarah has been through in the opening reels. Pay close attention to the interactions between the characters because Marshall plays close resemblance to legendary film-makers like Hitchcock in exercising elements of character personality foreshadow and intelligent thematic representations of man vs. human nature. When we enter the caves this film sky rockets into the horror hall of fame as we see Marshall carefully capture terrifying feelings of claustrophobia and being in tight quarters.

You know, I think this may be the first horror movie that can deliver true blue scares without ever really having to introduce it's antagonist. One of the scariest segments of The Descent features our leading lady trapped in the small cornered caves while her best friend Beth (Alex Reid) talks her through the terrifying moment. Shortly after this, the film's creatures start popping up and blood shed pursues. Marshall takes this opportunity to turn the relationships between the characters upside and inside out. Little by little we see possibly the most hated character in Juno dive deeper and deeper into her unlikable ego driven schema, then drastically becoming a fan favorite towards the film's conclusion, with shades of gray of course.

Sarah is obviously the one person that undergoes the most overwhelming evolution while under the caves. She transforms herself into a rough and tough heroine, rivaling her friend Juno in leading killer in regards to creature body count. Rebecca (Saskia Mulder) and Sam (MyAnna Buring) go from likable to unlikable as they choose the Darwinism morality in survival of the fittest. Beth is probably the most significant character in regards to the Sarah vs. Juno plot line, which I won't dare spoil for you here. The Descent is a major stand out when observing horror films in recent years because of these deep complex characterizations that Marshall puts forth. It's a fascinating skill to have as a storyteller, and just makes me enjoy this film even more.

The acting here is surprisingly top notch with Shauna McDonald and Natalie Mendoza highlighting the film's strongest performances. The creatures are very scary and creative, with Marshall correctly adapting bat-like elements to the creatures sight and sound senses. The score is like another character in Marshall's film, with A-list composer David Julyan (Insomnia) creating a terrific musical composition that flows fluidly with the film's tone and mood. The cinematography is masterful, especially when we travel into the caves where we receive great shots of emotional claustrophobia.

Ultimately, The Descent is without and doubt a horror masterpiece that's strong marks derive from writer/director Neil Marshall's excellent craftsmanship in character storytelling. Marshall's cave diving horror flick instills of breath a fresh air into what seems to be a deflating genre in quality film-making. The Descent is a perfect example as to why I relish in superlative films.

*As a final note, please go out and purchase/rent the UK version because this is the ending that has the most effect in terms of the films "birthday cake" pay off. I don't know why whoever chose to switch the ending in the U.S version chose to do so, a very moronic move on his/her part.*
