SDCC: Tron 2 Footage Screened!
Source: Blake Wright July 24, 2008
Disney surprised Con-goers in San Diego on Thursday with debut footage of its highly anticipated sequel to 1982's Tron. The footage began with an update of the popular lightcycle duel from the original film.
A blue figure – obviously on the run – is being tracked down by a yellow figure on a cycle. The blue figure dives forward with a bar in hand. Around the bar – and figure – a super sleek blue lightcycle forms and the chase in on.
The figures are cool updates of the 1982 warriors. Gone are the glowing blue/red/yellow faces, now replaced by helmets with clear facemasks housing what looks like holographs of human faces.
The cycles dip and dodge through a translucent, multi-level track that appears both digital and organic. The blue cycle is forced down a narrow crevasse between two ledges while the yellow bike takes the high road. The blue cycle emerges at the end of the path only to be cut off by the yellow bike's 'laser trail'. The blue bike smashes into a million pieces sending the blue rider flying in slow motion and flipping through the air. He lands and skids to a halt.
All of this activity is being observed from a high, cliff-side structure by a human figure – an older, bearded Kevin Flynn! Played again by Jeff Bridges, a very serene looking Flynn appeared first in a meditative position in the center of a large room. He arises, then walks to the window and peers down onto the action below.
The yellow figure 'retracts' his lightcycle walks over to the downed blue figure... and finishes the job.
The footage ended with a '2' appearing in the traditional Tron font and the TR2N emerging around it. The TRN faded away leaving the 2 alone on the screen again.

Isn't it kinda late for a sequal? Does your average movie goer still remember Tron 1? That's my only concern.
FranklinTard
07-26-2008, 12:43 PM
doubt it matters. the cult classic status of the first film will give this one a profit, easily.

Even if it does fail, who cares? No one remembers the 1st. If it's a sucsess the DVD rentals of Tron 1 will sore.

like i just said, people remember the first. its a cult classic film. the sequel will make money, easily. and then on dvd... it will dominate, because all those blu ray fanatics will need something like that in their collection.

I just watched Tron after going to Disneyland and being curious about Disney's "failures" in the 80s (I also have The Black Cauldron and Something Wicked This Way Comes coming on Netflix). It's visuals were amazing for its time, though the story wasn't all there at times. I would've thought though that its visuals would have made big money for Disney, but it was just a movie that suffered by being too far ahead of its time.

anyone know who's helming this?
In September 2007, the Hollywood Reporter said that a man named Joseph Kosinski was in negotiations to direct, with Steven Lisberger (writer and director of the first) as co-producer. The screenplay has been written by Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, who both also write for Lost.
Joseph Kosinski hasn't done a film yet, but he has done a few interesting commercials, which can be viewed here:http://www.slashfilm.com/2007/08/21/videos-who-is-joseph-kosinski/
I think that the Nike one in particular gives us a taste of what Tron 2 may look like; I think it's a little bit Tron-esque.

It doesn't make sense though. How does a 2 make sense replacing an O? If you didn't know about Tron, it would be awkward trying to pronounce it. I'm going to start calling it "Tritoon," because that's how it looks... or "Trizn."
I thought the game's sequel title was clever. Simply "Tron 2.0" - It fit with the universe.

Actually Tron is a pretty solid movie that was way ahead of its time upon its initial release. The story isn't particularly great and at points not super exciting, but the grand scheme of the film itself is impressive and Jeff Bridges kicks ass. I'm definitely excited for a sequel.

Daft Punk Scoring the New Tron
The confirmation comes from Upcoming Film Scores and the Disney folk they checked it out with: Daft Punk have signed on to write the score to Joseph Kosinski’s new Tron movie – Tron, Tron 2.0, Tr2n, 2ron or whatever the heck it ends up being called. May I suggest Trons? Jeez. It’s gonna get a bad name no matter what....

Well I enjoy the original enough to show it to people who haven't seen it from time to time. I still really like it. It fits the idea. As the time it takes place in the 80's, the world of Tron doesn't look as fancy by today's standard, but as time has passed and technology advanced, as has the world of Tron (presumedly).
But yeah, considering the unique appearance of the world in the movie, I think it still works pretty well even now.

Obviously they couldn't really call the film that now, but I think it would have made a great title for the movie sequel. Although the story that was used in the video game has some similarities to the one they wrote for this new movie.

I'm still not totally sure how I feel about the new suits. They look good in black, and the new helmets with the TV looking faces is pretty cool, but I liked the multiple glowing electronic designs that were on the old ones. Made them unique and complex. They appear to have opted out for plain leather and a couple glowing lines on these ones, making the new suits (and the new discs) pretty simplistic.
Oh well.

I must say, this is the first time in years that I was this excited for a Disney movie. I feel like a kid again, looking at how innovating the movie's tone will be from the trailer.
As far as a proven track record goes, Disney has never really had a "bad movie" as far as box office sales go (even their direct to dvd sales are perfect). Their movies are set for different audiences. So, if this movie fails, then it's probably the sign of the apocalyspe.

They put the teaser trailer with the lightcycles on of my blu-rays. We watched it at a friends house. This movie looks very clean and polished effects wise.

if you don't like tron, i don't like you.
Well I watched most of it and so far I like it. Will finish it tonight but I am sure it will end as good as the first half of the movie.
I hope I still have your approval!?!?

If your dad bout shat himself when he heard Bridges' voice, you should show him the test footage where they actuall show Bridges in his (extremely kickass) living quarters at the end.

I like the original a lot. It was of course way ahead of it's time. If anything Legacy looks to solidify it's place in film scifi lore history.
But what I don't understand is why Bridges looks like he's the bad guy in the concept F/X trailer.

A program probably designed by him that went rogue, is my guess. You see him/it in the main trailer too.

It's Clu 2.0. You're right, he has gone rogue.

Funny you bring that up jbailey. There has been talk with the older enlisted personnel, civilians, and officers about those machines being all over the place on every base. Somebody said they found a few of them still around.
