Looks like Tony Scott is remaking this 70s movie with Denzel and Travolta. The old one, which was pretty good for a 70s thriller, starred the legendary Robert Shaw as the leader of a small group of men who take over a subway train and demand $1 million ransom. With Tony Scott helming, hopefully it turns out to be halfway decent.
Fun fact: Tarantino took the naming of his characters in Reservoir Dogs after colors concept from this movie.
Travolta Joins Washington in Pelham 123

John Travolta is joining Denzel Washington in The Taking of Pelham 123, the Tony Scott-directed remake at Columbia Pictures.
Travolta will play the leader of a quartet that hijacks a New York subway train and threatens to kill the passengers unless a ransom is paid. The role was originated in the 1974 film by Robert Shaw.
Washington plays the chief detective of security for the subway, a role originated by Walter Matthau in the Joseph Sargent-directed drama.
David Koepp wrote the script and Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing through Escape Artists. Tony Scott is also producing through his Scott Free. The film rolls into production early next year.

One can always tell when a remake is in the works. The TV networks dig up the original film, dust it off and play it consistently throughout the month which suggest something is brewing. Now I know why this film is on TV all of a sudden. Look what they did with the original "3:10 to Yuma". The Original played nonstop for four weeks on TV while the new film is out in theaters. The 1974 film "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" is excellent so I would have thought and hoped that they would have chosen to remake the 1973 film "The Laughing Policeman" which in my opinion could be improved upon even though I thought the original was very good.

Loved the original movie. But in my opinion, Travolta usually makes for a laughable 'bad guy'.

He was pretty good in Sword Fish

He was OK in Swordfish, which was just an OK movie.
I don't think he's a very good actor and it stands out particularly when he's playing 'bad guys'.
Again, just my opinion.

Looks promising, but yeah I hope Tony Scott dumps all that flashy editing garbage. He just went overkill in Domino and that movie was trash.

I really liked Man on Fire. I loved the flashy camera style in that film. Deja Vu was really a terrific sci-fi/thriller. I wasn't expecting the story to unfold the way it did. So yeah, I'm sorta pumped for this, even though I loved the original.

Do you think it will be better than the original?

Trailer was really uninspiring, looks like a movie that will get lost in the summer shuffle and is going to be another by-the-book thriller.

This trailer was the best thing about Angels & Demons.

Eh, looks like it could be a run of the mill actioner, but could also be quite entertaining.
That and I haven't seen a movie in theaters since early January, and this is the only one I would consider seeing before Public Enemies. I'm kinda desperate.

Doesn't look bad. Scott is directing, so I'll see it....

I'm really looking forward to this. The combination of Washington, Travolta and Scott really gets me excited, plus it looks like a real tense against-the-clock thriller. I''l definitely see it. This and TF 2 look like the only decent movies in June.
