Despite the dedication of its star, Jodie Foster, THE BRAVE ONE is a dark, muddied and muddled affair, momentarily appeasing those seeking for thrills and disappointing those expecting a valid point to be made.

Director Neil Jordan (of THE CRYING GAME and INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE) visually brings Erica’s paranoid, unraveling life into dizzying effect; the camera often sways from side to side, plainly illustrating Erica’s anxiety and her growing disgust with herself. And, as always, Foster’s performance as woman-on-the-verge is compelling and instantly sympathetic. To see her diminutive figure and wide blue eyes shaking with fear whenever she fires doesn’t exactly illicit whoops and cheers from the audience. Never is this combination more apparent than in the chilling drug store sequence, when Erica fires her first shot.

Yet despite the high style of the film and Foster’s compelling performance, it is crippled by a lack of initiative on the part of the script. During the more dramatic scenes, Erica’s self-disgust and the sometimes preachy dialogue delivered by Terrence Howard condemn vigilante justice as the wrong solution. Yet when Erica brandishes her weapon, the film is all for vigilante justice. It doesn’t care whether it’s right or wrong, it cares about giving Foster good punch lines before she shoots someone in the face.

It works decently enough as a typical revenge thriller, but its motives become completely unclear when it tries to kick a message in. Erica is disgusted with what she’s becoming, but the audience cannot agree with her there.

I've been skeptical about this ever since I saw the RT meter dip down in the past two days.

Besides, my 1st thought seeing the trailer was "Jodie, I saw this before...when it was called The Accused."

I had a chance to see this for free about six months ago...I passed then and I am definitely passing now.

I was planning on seeing this Jodie Foster movie this weekend but after the bad reviews and especially the bad review our local critic gave it ( which I usually agree with) I decided to give it a pass. Maybe during some free time in the coming weeks I will view it at a matinee unless someone can convince me to see it earlier.

Well i can't agree with the critics or other negative things that i've seen. I don't know why all the hate. i liked it. i thought Foster was good and I just don't know why any critic was looking for some sort of point. i think the premise is simple. Woman is beaten near death and her boyfriend is killed. It was brutal. She gets gun for protection due to her ordeal, and becomes a vigilante.

8/10 for me.

Got a chance to see this film this afternoon at a matinee. I didn't like it all that much although Foster and Howard give fine performances. The story is similar to "Death Wish" and has the vigilante theme down to everything we have seen before. Nothing original here. Contrived screenplay doesn't help. A misfire for sure. Two stars out of four, or 6 stars out of 10, or a B- on the alphabet scale, or a Small Thumbs up very small, or just an OK, or wait for DVD which will cost the same as a movie ticket unless you are renting of which then you pay matinuee prices...sooooooooooooooooooooo....take your pick.

Salty nailed it.

Deathwish revisited with the emotion of Agent Clarice Starling in Buffalo Bill's basement. It was nothing special with the story line, but Foster is still compelling to watch because she is Foster, not her character.

Terrence Howard gave a noteworthy performance that is definitely worth watching if you respect his work. He flows so well that you forget who he is and immerce into his characterizations. Mary Steenbergen is OK, it's like watching everything else she has done. Same vocal tone and glances as most other characters she played.

Nicky Katt was castt perfectly and a pleasure to watch his career thrive.

2 out 4. Worth a rental on a rainy day on a HD TV.

Just my thoughts, a few weeks late.

I saw a trailer for this and my mate turned to me and said, so this'll be a comic book movie without the comic book then... It kinda looks like it should be a comic.
