So nobody's gonna start one, huh? This long too? Alright, I'll do it.
MY REVIEW: Death Sentence
Death Sentence: 8/10
Plot: Nick Hume (Kevin Bacon) is a mild-mannered executive with a perfect life, until one gruesome night he witnesses something that changes him forever. Transformed by grief, Hume eventually comes to the disturbing conclusion that no length is too great when protecting his family. Written by 20th Century Fox
Critique: Going into this, I had no excitement. I had no ambitions what-so-ever. I had just come right out of seeing Shoot'um Up, and I was losing my mind over what I had just seen. The worst Clive Owen film I had ever seen. Horrible acting, pathetic dialogue, crude humor and outrageous action sequences (via Crank). So while walking into a somewhat packed theater just minutes before the room darkened, I had no reason to feel excited about the film I was about to see. Thankfully for me, this film was NOTHING like it's previous counter-part in which I had just seen in the theater down the hall. What I had come across was not just BETTER then it's predecessor "Death Wish". Yes, this film is actually a REMAKE of the original 1974 Charles Bronson film.
Kevin Bacon issues as Nick Hume, mild manored threat assessment goto guy - turned nothing to lose executioner of scum. In many cases, you will find a movie where a no name amature will become a gun-toting expert within minutes of picking up a firearm and immediately knowing pinpoint precision, when firing. In this case, you actually see a man who knows nothing of the sort, coming into his own and learning how to fire as he progresses. For me, that's one of the main things that made this film all the more enjoyable.
Another great addition to this film was baddie Billy Darley (played by Garrett Hedlund) who brought a real sense of grittiness to the role. Additional roles by Kelly Preston, Aisha Tyler and surprisingly, John Goodman who made me laugh on multiple occasions. The one-take chase scene with Hume and Darley's gang felt very intense and well shot. So was the attack on Humes' home. I found that scene very crude and did not expect it at all. About the only thing that disappointed me in this film was the less then satisfying ending, to which had me wondering for hours once I left the theater room. Other then that, this film was very pleasing, and a great leap over the mindless crapfest that was Shoot'Um Up.
Extra Tidbit: Did you know that novelist Brian Garfield, author of the novel "Death Sentence", did not approve what-so-ever the making of the 1974 classic; "Death Wish", staring Charles Bronson? In fact he did not approve of the off-topic sequels that followed as well. To his concern, "Death Sentence" is the the closest thing to his novel thus far.
Overall Rating: 8/10
