European reseach calls for Mars "astronauts". (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070619/sc_afp/spacemarseurope_070619110956)
Valid experiment, though I wonder if they are going to use actually sciencists or just peoploe who fit a certain profile.

That would be interesting I think. But that's a long time to be away.

That is a long, long time to be cooped up in a small space with a bunch of random people. Anyone wanna bet the experiment doesn't go the distance?

Oh hell, I could do that in spades. I'm borderline nuts anyway. But I'm not European, and it's not a real trip to Mars. I'd volunteer in a second for a real trip to Mars. It would probably kill me, but what a way to go. I hope I'm still alive when we finally make the trip, but it's not looking too likely.

I could do it, as long as I'm allowed to masturbate as often as I want.

Oh don't worry, he'd have a tube that would empty into the vacuum of space every couple days or so.
We'll never go to Mars, no one cares about space anymore.

Man, I'm still hoping they build a casino resort on the moon while I'm still young enough to enjoy it. I doubt anyone will set foot on Mars in my lifetime.

No way, cause then we'd be effed. Two hundred years later, we'd be invaded by nose-picking, bug eyed aliens with a penchant for bad jokes. :(

it's not happening any time soon - they still have to send more landers up there for experiments and develop a good system for launch and travel. It's rather complex to keep people alive and sane on a trip that long and the technoloy is not a reality yet to even travel that far.
They will havve to find a ship that will contain enough supplies (and enough reusable supplies) not to mention a good power source.
One possibility is to send a factory up to land on Mars before we even take off - that factory ma be able to make enough fuel from Mars' atmosphere for a return trip.
It's gonna take 20 years or more before we see it.
And we'll have to go back to the moon first. Taking off from a moon station is more economical and a better solution to use less energy for lift off.

I saw this great Documentary on Discovery HD, how more then decade ago they came up with the plan to take someone to Mars and back.
Granted it the trip would take 3 yrs. total. But still they atleast had a plan and suddenly once the first Bush got in Power the final plan went down the drain.
It's actually a pretty good documentary.

How should we map out the Mars settlements? Like Roman provinces, or states, or what? Along those lines, I'd like to be a Tribune to protect the people's rights against the power hungry politicians that CS will obviously spawn. :D

I'd do the experiment if the pay was a little more and they allowed US citizens to participate.

Iw've seen tons of documentaries on Mars trips - yeah there are a lot of plans out there - picking the right one is the key though.
Everything works - in theory. :)
I'd love to go into space but I'm already too old and unhealthy - I'd never pass the physical - not even the Space Cowboys physical
I already spend a lot of time alone and indoors so I wouldn't have that or isolation as a problem

In 2620 the name of Uranus will be changed to get rid of "That Stupid Joke" once and for all. The new name will be "Urectum" - Futurama
