View Full Version : Pre-release Nitpicking

This isn't meant to be a discussion about the Joker or Batman. The Joker issue is simply an example.
This complaint of mine can apply to any genre of movie: drama, horror, comedy, animated, etc.

Pre-movie whining and gushing. I know, I know, nothing to lose sleep over [and I don't], but it bothers me a lot.

Example: The picture of the Joker from the upcoming Batman movie [titled The Dark Knight] surfaced. The problem is that the picture is mostly "filled-in." What I mean is that a pixelated image was released which only showed about 40% of the surface area of the Joker's face [picture a lot of dots making up a partial image]. A fan filled in the rest and then pages upon pages of people commented on it in the following thread: http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/12522392.html [you can find the picture there as well].

A major nitpick and gripe of people is that he isn't smiling, a trademark of Joker from the comic books. But, the Joker is illustrated in hundreds even thousands of panels frowning or doing something other than grinning like the mad fool he is. It doesn't stop handfuls of people, however, from exclaiming the movie is going to suck and this is the worst Joker ever. I don't understand what jump-to-conclusions mat people own and mandate their entire lives by. It's like all the handfuls of people who heard Venom was going to be in the new Spiderman and proclaimed "OMG this is going to be the best Spiderman movie EVAR!!!!1!11!1!" Of course the reviews from critics and fans alike are out and the majority of people who saw it were very disappointed [myself included]. I wasn't disappointed from false expectations [like the majority of people seemed to be], but simply because Sam Raimi didn't do the character of Venom justice.

Watching previews for a movie and deciding if it looks worth watching is one thing, but nit-picking that you don't like a character's facial expression? Sometimes I wonder what this world is coming to with people and their ridiculous nuances.

He's smiling. Look closer. Remember, he's an evil CLOWN.

Either way, was this thread really necessary? Creating a new thread in the Coming Soon forums to essentially complain about complainers? Yeah, okay.

Go to the Comic Book forums and bring this crap up in the actual Batman thread. But regardless, I'm seeing more people in there saying that they like the way he looks, and the few that don't, aren't going as far as saying they think the movie will suck or that Joker will suck, just that they were kinda disappointed with the appearance... period.

Let's say you sit down at a restaurant and you order a meal that includes peas and corn. Let's say that the peas and corn are horribly overcooked and are not good to eat. I would think it valid to voice a complaint to the manager. However, if the person dining complains about their peas being to the left of the corn when the customer wants it to the right I would say this is unnecessary nit-picking.

Apply that principle to my thread and you'll see that I'm not against complaining, I am against asinine nit-picking.

Wow, that example is so far-fetched and completely besides the main point. Go make your rant in the already existent Batman thread. You're complaining about the nitpickers of the Joker, and trying to make it seem like a "general" subject.

In addition, never mind how I mentioned most people are actually saying that he looks good, and most of the nitpickers have simply said they're disappointed by the first picture of him, not really going as far as saying the movie is going to suck or Joker will. So even if this was a general subject thread (which it probably won't end up being), your example wasn't a very good one. I've seen far worse, both in the past, and current.

But for the sake of putting it as such, yes, early nitpickers that condemn a movie before it comes out, or before a trailer comes out even (usually when it's the worst), are quite silly. There's no stopping them really though. You either do it or you don't, and most don't even realize how silly they're being, or that they're doing it.

The Joker complaints are small compared to the Galactus complaints. i'm mad that the Joker is being transformed into the Returns Penguin and FF fans are mad because Galactus isn't some retarded looking giant.
